In regards to the rules thread that Agony posted… One thing I have noticed as of late is an above average amount of ooc being used in the city and elsewhere. The last couple of times I’ve logged on I’ve noticed it right away. I still can’t effectively go adventuring (new system soon) but can manage short RP sessions now and then. The last time was a few nights ago, I logged on as Bill and wandered to Khazeets. There was probably 6 to 8 folks hanging out and the ooc was constant. A couple folks piped in with “Back to RP!” or “No more ooc!” but it didn’t help as much as it should have. People were still chatting about builds and feats, etc. If there was a hundred sentences made I would bet 80 of them were ooc. After about ten minutes passed, and after the two folks asked for the ooc to stop, I simply wandered off… having enough ooc at that point. Perhaps this rule should be enforced or reminded a little more? I’ve nothing against friendly chatting with friends but it really takes away from the atmosphere when done at Khazeets. |

Don't want to be nazi about this, even though I agree strongly with you that OOC chatter should be kept to minimum. Especially in a large public setting where many get disturbed by it. I urge people to think to yourself "do I really need to say this ooc comment?" |

Agreed. The occasional small OOC break or comment is acceptable, but it can get silly at times. Recommendations If you want to OOC chat with multiple people, go somewhere less public, gather, and use whispers. At least then to passer bys you look like a shady group discussing something private. If only two want to chat, then switch to tells. DO NOT use party chat for OOC when there is a DM online. We see all party chat (including those comments like - "hey, can you hold these items while I swtich characters" - yes, i happened once... come on, if you are going to cheat, try to be clever about it... no, wait, don't cheat!). Yes, we can disable it, but if we are running an event we sometimes request those involved to use party chat to better keep a track of what is going on. If you are spamming the party chat channel with OOC comments then don't be surprised if a DM gets a little annoyed. The party chat channel is to keep the RP going when in groups that get split up, not for for using specifically for OOC. Some people seem to use regular chat for IC and party chat for OOC. This is not the recommened way. Remember to use OOC markers such as \\ or (( or whatever your personal favourite is to indicate it. |

I don't discount DM intervention from crude totally non-OOC chatter, but neither do I think that it should be action to penalize players bluntly. If I really want them back to IC, I'll just make IC event like have Khazeet talk... all the sudden every player tries to be the most zen roleplayer ever ![]() If you have private OOC chat with single person. Send tells. Yes, they're actually just for that reason in there and doesn't derail roleplay.95% of things are absolutely simply roleplayable. If you are now thinking what isn't you're also likely trying to find excuses for them, I'll say that you can still roleplay 95% of any examples you'll come up. Crashed? Your character spaced out/got lost/got stuck to tree/dropped his sunglasses and couldn't find them. Yada yada yada. Heck, when people speak of internet without // or (( or other marks to gesture it's OOC, I'll have my character ask IC what is internet... if the player seemingly doesn't get my implication then I'll send them in tell giving explanation what is roleplaying. If it's group just talking about real life things unrelated to gaming entirely... just guide them to go into arena to talk or some other place out of public. Yes, I'm sorry that I don't care if Arsenal managed in soccer, nor do I care if your aunt just got kidnapped by aliens, or if cat ate your keyboard. Just keep the OOC small talk elsewhere... like chat or forums or non-public-IG-areas.It's a roleplaying server still. More OOC only creates more OOC, so those who have a hobby of doing it, you're killing our RP even when you don't mean it!

OOCers? Get them up against the wall! Really though, it's not a chatroom. If we could find a way back to the OOC room after entering the city, some of these discussions could just be relocated to a place where it's acceptable... |

To be honest, I'd rather they didn't spend time in OOC room for it either. It's not the best image of server either if there's group of people fooling around in OOC room. "Oohkay... so "Roleplay server to scratch over"" - Don't get me wrong though, I'm not THAT against OOC, but server starting location and public meeting points are few places where I'd rather leave excessive OOC fooling around away

everybody just needs to make a habit of doing whispers if their just talking OOC to one person near a crowd, thats usually the main problem point, it seems |

I'm not what you'd call a heavy role player, but when I am in conversation with another character I try to couch ooc comments in in character terms. It's pretty easy to talk about training feats and skills in character since every player has to raise levels and everything that comes with that. Sometimes it is a little irritating to use artificial language to describe the new +5 weapon someone made you, instead of just saying plus 5 but there are ways as there are for adding points to your skills and such. as for gossiping out of character or talking about things unrelated to the game or your character, well I find that to be in poor taste. I'm sure there are area's where these people can go to chat that won't intrude on others. The gymnasium perhaps or another massive but empty area where these conversations will only be witnessed by a DM or someone, who for some reason, feels the need for a sauna or a bath. One thing I did notice the few times I was around when there was a large group in the bazaar is that some people seem to think they need to embellish their RP with ooc comments or smiley symbols. This is confusing and takes away from immersion in the other player's role play. |

If a few people want a good OOC natter I say it's not a bad thing, i've been sat in undersigil before with 2-3 players yapping away cos RP came to an end and we were just chatting OOCly, other times in the cave in the abyss and such places. What is really a crap place to do this though is in the bazaar and especially around khazeets bar where mostly people gather for RP and IC discussions. OOC comments can get popped in here and there sure for relevant reasons but full blown conversations for periods of time at that location are a pain in everyones butt. I'm guilty of it and I know Dm's who have posted opinions in this post are too. I'll never be offended from people saying to cut the OOC though, if i'm at khazeets bar, cos really it shouldn't be going on and you have to be honest with yourself when your being naughty. |

This has probably been requested/suggested before. But how difficult would it be to make a chat tab, or another area that is for OOC? Also, beleive me, Ive heard all the detracting comments in the years of an OOC channel/area. I've also seen and experienced the benefits. In the end tho, if you are forcing people that log in to the server to be IC and not have in in-format forum for casual OOC then in the end that will drive others away. As the solution is currently if your not in the mood for heavy RP and just want some casual OOC chatter while doing this that and the other is to either take it to a PM with just one person or go somewhere else. Now I'm not flaming just adding the perspective of someone who is not a newb when it comes to RP but is new to the server. |

I don't believe we would want to do that. We want to discourage OOC, not encourage it. |

Yes, it would be encouraging OOC, but in the proper venue. There would be no excuse left for OOC chatter in the IC tabs in certain areas. The hardcore dont even have to click on the OOC tab. And it leaves the option for someone to log in, chat with peeps and keep server populations up. It also helps to promote the RP element if used responsibly. |

OOC only gets annoying for me when people call out each other on lore mid-discussion. That is the pure essence of 'dick move'. |

It really is just a case of the right place for everything. If three people want to duck into a back alley and spend an hour discussing the merits of their builds or just shooting the shit about their weekends, there is nothing wrong with that... but be willing to accept that you're going to have to set the actual IC RP aside. That same conversation in the middle of Khazeet's with ten other people walking by breaks immersion, and even worse OOC tends to spawn OOC. Those three people are soon enough joined by others passing by who want to offer their two cents, plus a few others who have to keep tossing out "stay IC" reminders, and a third group who keeps trying to plug away with their RP and ignore the OOCers... and suddenly the text window is flying by too fast to read. Great places for OOC yakking without much worry about annoying others include the Gray Waste RP cave, the private dining areas in the Foul Olde Spirit, and really any of the "back street" areas in Sigil, especially in the Lady's or Hive wards. |
