Having your NWN2 personal files sitting on your C: drive annoys many people, and its always a pain if you have to do a reinstall, especially if that is because your primary hard drive has died (assuming you have a secondary). Actually, I use Karen's Replicator anyway to keep my Neverwinter Nights 2 folder backed up on a weekly basis, but still, I wanted my game files off my C: drive. I think many people know that you can move your My Documents folder to wherever you like, that newer versions of Windows allow you to do this quite easily. What many people do not know is there is an alternate way if you don't mind using the command line. What you can do is create what is known in Windows as a Directory Junction. Something the *nix world has had for many many years in the form of symbolic links. This has existed since Windows 2000 i believe, but only tried this on Windows 7 and the command used for Directory Junctions is different i believe. So, these instructions are for Win 7 only. Let us assume you have a separate partition for NWN2 assigned to N: (I do )1) Backup your entire My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2 folder (just in case). 2) Create a folder somewhere on the destination drive (just to keep things neat and tidy) for example N:\NWN2_Personal 3) Move your Neverwinter Nights 2 folder to N:\NWN2_Personal 4) Open a shell (or command line). If you don't know how to do this, stop now. 5) Now type in the following command: mklink /J "C:\users\<your username>\My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2" "N:\NWN2_Personal\Neverwinter Nights 2" If i gave the right instructions, and you did things right, the game should correctly see your NWN2 files, but now they will be saved where you want them to be, without moving your entire My Documents folder. You should be able to use this method for just about any game that insist on stuffing save information into your user profile. This includes those that use Application Data or Local Settings\Application Data or even more esoteric locations that make no sense and are only movable to other places using registry hacks. |
