Availability of UMD items

Foolishly, I was assuming I could gather a set of UMD gear, for which to use out of combat to buff up with wands.

Well now Tuqrox is lvl23 and i've not seen a single UMD item anywhere, far as I recall. Not in shops or being sold by other players, nor from drops.

Is it right to assume that UMD skill items are very rare or am I just unlucky? At the moment it would be nice to know, since i'd do well to delevel sooner, rather then later, to get those UMD points up
Tuqrox, the ogrillion - Dumb brute
Edvard Morner, the pureblood - Barmy egotistical antagonizer
Enoch, the human - Dustman rebuker
Bai' Dago Vixxor, the gnome - Planar scavenger
Agkistrodon, the halfblood - Doomguard aspirant

There is no available UMD boost from store items or enchantment. It MAY exist as a rare drop; I don't know if there are any UMD-boosting items in the OC, but that would be the only likelihood.

We ran to the sounds of the thunder.
We danced among the lightning bolts,
and tore the world asunder.

We should note how awesome the people at Dalelands were and make +3 UMD shurikens ::troll::

And in terror they run and hide,
From the shadows of old we rise,
Awakened, from the dark!

Over the ancient ruins we fly,
Where the old kings go to die,
And the new kingdoms rising high,
Awakened, from the dark, dark slumber!"

UMD does lose all it's value if anyone can get high enough UMD to use anything.

Yup, its bad enough that any class can dump points into it so that by the time they are epic they can use just about any item and cast some spells from scrolls.... hell, even Thrud the Orc Barbarian with 6 INT can do that!

Well if thurd the barbarian with 6 int has 15 charisma yah, he sure can well not all items, some things do require up to 28 UMd to successfully use and scrolls even higher for guarenteed usage. but if thurd has 6 charima he'll have to invest solidly and at level 27 may be able to use the mid tier monk boots.

Scrolls are the only ones that are even remotely difficult to get enough UMD to. SoZ UMD check works different from the original NWN 2 one, it doesn't relate to the value of item anymore, just solid:

Emulate an Alignment: Minimum DC10
Emulate a Class: Minimum DC13
Use a Wand: DC10

Use a Scroll:
Lvl 1(DC13)
Lvl 2(DC15)
Lvl 3(DC17)
Lvl 4(DC19)
Lvl 5(DC21)
Lvl 6(DC23)
Lvl 7(DC25)
Lvl 8(DC27)
Lvl 9(DC29)

Compared to PnP:

Decipher a written spell 25 + spell level
Use a scroll 20 + caster level
Use a wand 20
Emulate a class feature 20
Emulate a race 25
Emulate an alignment 30

So Thrud invests. As does everyone who wants to use said items. Keeping in mind that they can get unequipped and lost on transfer, if you don't have 13 UMD without CHA bonus item. UMD isn't meant to be the swiss army knife of I can use anything. You put points in it, you get the benefits. End of story.

Edit. btw, if we go by PnP, no matter how many points Thurd has in UMD, he'll never use scrolls, because Barbarians are illiterate, can't read or write. Not even magic.

((But seriously, it's in the 3e PHB, check it. If they removed it for 3.5, then they are idiots))

Illiteracy
Barbarians are the only characters who do not automatically know how to read and write. A barbarian may spend 2 skill points to gain the ability to read and write all languages he is able to speak.

A barbarian who gains a level in any other class automatically gains literacy. Any other character who gains a barbarian level does not lose the literacy he or she already had.

I'm prone to agree with this, although i'll have to delevel a pretty 3-4 levels now  but oh, well, it' wont take to long to regain, which is the only comfort

I suppose I just assumed with all the epic loot, crazy xp output and so forth, there would also be UMD items readily available.

The ability to "cheat" past all D&D restrictions and use anything IMO is something that shouldn't depend on one's luck, but one's investment :P Same reason why we don't have Immunity items... if you want one, either get spells or classes that grant them.

We do try to be true to the feel of D&D, and that includes having character roles instead of characters that can "do everything (tm)". Not that we're perfect, but we atleast try keeping it in mind :)
