"Missing" races

I was wondering, out of all of the available player races why certain ones aren't available.

I was expecting to see Githyanki and Githzerai, possibly even fey'ri and/or tanaruuk.

See the Special Race Request subforum below if you're interested in playing any of these races, merzikain. In-game, you might find yourself meeting players with Githyanki, Githzerai, and Half-fiendish characters, not to mention succubi, angels, beholderkin, ogre magi, an iron golem, an imp, juvenile dragons, and others.

We ran to the sounds of the thunder.
We danced among the lightning bolts,
and tore the world asunder.

It's true, just ask to play it and they get back to you sooner or later and usually you get to play it. There is no favouritism, they let me play an Ogre Mage and I'm an <<sugar cookie>>.

I'm not sure I'd want to play one of those. I was mostly just surprised that the gith weren't a part of the character creation set of outsiders. Didn't know if they were left out on purpose or something.

If I was going to play any of them it would probably be the Fey'ri. I used to have a TT D&D Fey'ri character. The thing that made him fun, however, was being able to shape change. Without being able to mimic other player appearances it wouldn't be as fun.

Same goes for an actual doppleganger. Causing strife among players by impersonating them was always fun. And if you could frame them for a crime and have them arrested, you could then impersonate a city guard and go take their stuff from storage while they're locked up.

Online, however, I don't think that would be as fun. Would more likely just piss a bunch of people off more than anything else...

I have been toying with an idea though. And before I make an official request I'd like some opinions.

The idea is basically a half-troll (human). He'd be based off of Deadpool in many ways. This does bring up some questions I've had for a few other characters too, though.

For one, if his profession is mercenary/assassin, how does that play out IC? I mean if someone hires me to kill another PC, I have to have the target's permission to engage them in such a conflict in the first place. And if I do manage to defeat them, what then? They just respawn so it's not like there's any benefit for someone hiring me which leads me to think no one would bother and I'd lose a lot of profession based RP.

And what would be a good way to covertly advertise my services? I already have one mercenary character and another assassin character. Mercenary isn't such a big deal, it's not like it's a profession that gets you shunned. But an assassin doesn't just go out to the market and start calling out, "Killing people! Killing people for jink here! Want someone dead? For a price I'm your murderer!"

Then there's the NPC/monster contracts. The monster contracts would be easy since they're made to be killed, but how would I prove it? Not every monster drops some identifiable loot that can be used as proof.

And NPC? I haven't tried to kill any NPCs but I imagine they're likely set to be really high level and/or immortal in some way. An NPC would be easier to prove you killed (if it is even possible to kill them) since the client would be able to see that the NPC isn't standing there anymore.

Ooo, just had an idea! (this post should probably have been made in a separate topic... that wasn't the idea i just had...)

What if the designers added in "marks" to the game? NPC's created for no other reason than to kill them. And I don't mean initiate battle and hack/slash it out till they drop. I mean more of a skilled assassin type interaction where you can use sleight of hand to poison their drink or slip a knife between their ribs for a more stealthy kill? And if the check fails then the target can retaliate.

That would be awesome. Has anyone asked for something like that before?

Anyway, enough rambling. I'd like to hear what you all think of this.

First off, to be clear, I'm not a DM or Developer, just commenting and curious about this. The githyanki and githzerai are not implemented automatically because I think there are some aspects of modifying a chararacter to be of these races that have to be done manually by a skilled DM, so they want to be sure it's being done by someone who will stick around and play the character, with a clear idea of what these races/character types are about.

Regarding the mercenary/assassin ideas, I think I see where you're going with this Merzikain, but I'm curious about what you mean by this character would be a mercenary. In your post you seem to at one point be talking about mercenary as in the sense you'd work for whoever paid, but you then talk about contracts to kill, which is definitely bounty/assassin work.

One of the things in Planescape that I've seen is there's many types of professional for hire killers/men of arms/assassins in Sigil. They don't have a "system" in place for bounties, mercenaries or anything. It's pretty much up to one player to hire another player or convince a "mercenary" to join the group either for a set amount of gold or a share of found loot. That's in the traditional "party" format of course.

In terms of roleplay though, I've seen a few groups that were "mercenary companies", typically meant to be small units or military groups that for hire would accept fighting contracts against other units or targets. Again, these were usually groups of characters seeking out this group dynamic and thier contracts were the "story" behind why they would go attack each given area of this server... i.e. we've a contract to go clear out this cave in the Grey Wastes... now we've a contract to go get a pearl from some Cave in Brux etc.

Rarely have I seen Dms set up "marks" to be assassinated, or run an event for a mercenary company to tackle. I ran a group of four or five people who hung on for the better part of a year with large ogre, giant and other big creatures, the Company's name was Large and in Charge. We had asked several Dms to run some events for us, but nothing came of it and when one is as a player group stuck creating one's own imaginary contracts, it gets to be a bit dull and implausible to be running a mercenary company.

None the less, perhaps as an assassin, or bounty hunter you might be able to get some story going, completely IC by getting other players to use your services to track down and locate other players currently on the server, or even "subdue" and bring them to justice. Given proper pvp permission from the targets and/or good roleplay, it might be quite rewarding and doable.

How to do this without seeming crass (Killer for hire, assassinations, 2 for a thousand!) takes some basic subtlety and watching the personalities of the server. There will in the course of days or weeks be squabbles you may witness or dislikes expressed. Play on these, imply you can help disgruntled person x get even with person y, over that snub in the baazar - for a price. And figure how to do it without being caught/seen/fingered and remain unconnected to the client who's hiring you.

To clarify my concept of the merc/assassin, the character would take any job if the pay was good enough. I focused on the assassin bit more than the merc bit because I didn't see as much of a concern with finding merc work (most NPC quest could be considered mercenary work and other PCs who need help getting through an area would be another source).

The character would be too much of a loner to consider joining or forming a mercenary group so I don't think I'd end up with the trouble you mentioned you experienced.

The "bring em back alive" part of bounty hunting would be interesting. Is there a subdual damage widget or something similar on this server?

I'm not worried, I'm curious. :D

I am leaning more toward requesting it, though I'll probably develop some of my other characters further before I do.

Agreeing with ya on this.

My assassin Ven is different. Old school guild style that works for particular groups. He is basically reserved for particular events and such, more RP than combat based. Most people view assassins as just sneak up and backstab, but its not really just that. Go around and make things look like accidents ((such as rigging things to fall on people and kill them or causing them to fall off a building and playing it up as they slipped and fell, or commited suicide.)), or even use slight of hand to slip poison into food and drinks ((which sadly most people play slight of hand as pickpocketing when it has many, many other uses.))

The one thing I'm having the most difficulty with is figuring out a good way to solicit contracts.

Oh, another question, related to the original (races) question.

Is there any templates like Shade? Or any kind of teleporting SLA?

For how I do it with Ven, he gets given them when required. Usually for events and such.

I think that the real reason that gith have not been opened is that there are only one or two models, and, unless I am mistaken, apparel will not work with them.

So they would all look nearly identical.

There are actually a few more models, but engine limitations means only one model can be used for a race (with varying faces), so end effect is that they would all be identical...

This arguably isn't any worse than with orcs or bladelings, but I felt it was better to atleast get some variety in the gith player chars
