What's going on with SCoD? Certainly I'm not alone in considering that simple yet perhaps even complex in its simplicity question. I know that I'm not alone in asking this question or question akin since I've actually talked with quite a few, some whom are going to play other games, others whom are playing more on another server. I debated the possibilities as well and actually have not logged in myself much either, but then I also figured that if I'm not trying to at least take a stand to bring awareness or motivate people then perhaps the issue escalates even worse or... perhaps it will not. I'm not thinking I'm big enough to waver SCoD to way or another if I suddenly took off. Now first of you will be asking "What's this chap jabbering about?", well the situation in simplicity is explained as staleness or apathy. Yes, apathy and I assure you I know a lot about apathy. I could ask people what they think is problem, or what they think is fix, but you know... I already know, but the thing is that it's not something I or dev's or admin can fix. The issue lies in our community, while okay in terms of helpfulness the general enthusiasm has dropped to all time low (That can also be seen with the friendliness being less than what it used to be, people become judgemental because they're bored/tired to try). In-fact the number of things I have tried to start have mostly ended with absolutely nobody caring which in turn radiates back at me not caring. Now yes, it's one person and I wouldn't bother posting this if it was just me, but as far as I've been lead to understand I'm not only one. Couple of the people whom also believes akin have asked me to actually join them in another server, generally speaking I'm one of the more loyal type people that have sticked through a lot of crappy situations, but this time I have to admit that it's actually more alluring than actually logging in SCoD, opening player list and then realizing that I'm already bored in thinking that if I approach 95% of these that I'll not get satisfactory return of my time or effort. There used to be time that I logged in and barely could log off to get some food, now it's good if I log in and stay logged in for next one and half hours which I mostly fill by gathering stuff that I know I have great plan to use in future plots, then I victoriously return to the Bazaar and get the reminder that what awaits in my characters future is not great plots, but rather bantering at Bazaar doing nothing but waiting for events and when there comes events criticize someones effort of trying to make 'your' day more interesting with nothing to gain. Or telling the exciting things to move away because you have better things to do, like say... nothing. So where has the gaming time went wrong? What happened to all the drive and why are many of us left with the thought that all good players actually left already, but considering that it's mostly the same players for a long time... I feel like a lot of these players actually just log in out of "server loyalty", but loyalty isn't really going to help through this situation if all you do is log in... enthusiasm, curiosity, intrigue, activity, inclusion, openness, casual and genuine friendliness as well as helpfulness actually are more traits that are being looked after. I could go on and on about what I feel went wrong, in-fact one player asked and I was sad to find that it was some of the longest texts I've written in a long time. But I keep thinking, perhaps I'm of old generation that's supposed to move on and let progress occur naturally. Quite a few people mention to me in defensive sounding way that they are thinking to try or play something else, you know what, I don't blame them a bit, I keep thinking that if our server doesn't provide satisfactory and fun experience I don't think people should force themselves to stay within, then they're just trying to betray themselves. If you've got this far without or with butt clenching, then I guess it's time to mention more about means to fend off this apathy and lack of enthusiasm... There's obviously going to be couple whom just says "Moar content and events, I want to explore new stuff" you're not entirely wrong, however that's short term fix and vicious circle (which burns developers/EMs/DMs out quite fast) that just feeds apathy and lack of enthusiasm by removing players own effort to make something interesting or fun for themselves and those around them. It is the co-interest of both sides that feeds ones desire to do more. My previous weak (public) attempt was weekend challenge to meet new people, yeah I bet nobody even tried except the guy that feels obliged to post "I did!", part of me thinks starting anew after most have left to be answer which on one side leans toward "vault wipe" kind of deal (Now a lot of you go; Grawr! Get the f**k off! That's stoopid thing that kills the server, yar yar yar) but that obviously wouldn't be a good thing and could possibly be terminal approach or just waiting it out could escalate to further apathy. So indeed the big question is... what can we do about it? I could say "do this or that" but if people already lack the motivation it'll just go to deaf ears or get couple cheers and then nobody does anything. Nah I think the issue in simplicity is that people as a whole shouldn't force themselves to log in out of loyalty, but actually do what they need to revitalize themselves and their intrigue to roleplay. And no I don't know what does that to you, perhaps a break or making new character perhaps not. I can even make some ideas to spark up some RP concepts if you want, but not here since this is already becoming tl;dr to everyone. For me, I'm going for a road trip this weekend and I intend to use it to take time off then come back with more refreshed mindset, to check this without doubt overgrown and possibly by that time locked thread, but I feel like it's something people need to hear and think about. And for those that are going "Grawr this is so negative, scolding and depressive" I give only this one song to express that intents are far different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OvpzForHyU&feature=related |

Considering how new players here are few and far between (and after hearing how certain newbies were treated, I am not surprised at all), staleness will eventually arise. I am not going to complain much about new content or lack of events, since as you said, those are generally short term fixes, with their own separate issues too. What I'd say is to look into more of the matter of making new blood stay, rather than *cough* scaring them off by being complete dicks to them. *cough* That's my two cents, consider it as you will. |

I tend to agree with Tomekk, a lot of new players since I'm here rarely settled for good for a reason or another. I was quite lucky myself since I managed to get involved, or actually got my char interested in the old vets chars. But I came in a time it was possible, if I'd come these days I'll find the whole situation quite depressing, because a lot of people just wait for something to happen, at the wall or just play their old characters completely out of ideas, or sometimes log to do something with their friends. If you check the actual population of the server right now it's 60% newbie, this does means a lot of opportunities too. I do think the lack of opposition also plays an important role. |

<<I love sweets>> finally. Anyway, lately I've tried to gather suggestions as to what has to be done with plot policy and player group policy to make things more engaging. I've got a couple and perhaps I'll get more and either post them here or send them privateyl depending on wishes of those players. Some people however simply told me that a petition had already been done before and the suggestions had been simply brushed aside. Anyway, in general(and I support those suggestions wholly) they have been like this: 1.)Allow players to alter the game world to atleast an extent. No totally Sigil-shattering things like comepletely eliminating a Faction...but a switch of balance could help. For example, there are several Factions which have absolutely no NPCs on immediate display to represent them and make people interested in that said Faction. Very few plots ever leave any sign of change. We had a huge Shaper/Shadowsworn campaign but nowadays, there's not a single mark to remind anyone of the great catastrophe and subsequently nothing to remind of the time and effort the DM and the players spent. Stagnation and ultraloyalty to lore is what makes several older players quite demotivated. The problem with altering the world lies partially in editing of areas which are to be altered but I am sure people who want the change could as well try their own hands in Toolset. Besides, rabble and a couple of signs shouldn't take too much of a builder's time. Entire new areas or more major changes should be a player effort, ofcourse. 2.)Persistent guild houses for persistent guilds. Now, before I get shout at because I run one of few such guilds and yes, I say one of few because I know of atleast 2-3 people who are trying or have tried to run a guild recently. I also know of a different guild which, with various levels of activity, persists through several month. Guild housing won't make RP less engaging, in current situation with SCoD it would be actually hard to accomplish(as sad as that is). In truth, it would make more people interested in such guilds and make the RP a little more "tangible". Actually, I was told DM focus should be on player groups so that people are more motivated to try and accomplish things together. 3.)Weekly/monthly IG OOC staff/player co-op meetings. Players and Admins/DMs meeting once in a while to share opinions and suggestions live. Ofcourse, some things like one's player's accusation's against another should be kept out of such a forum. I saw a "Server Meeting" program in action on later TFR before the Dr. Tentacles(Not to confuse with Ceremorph even though I am sure they would like each other) had to shut it down. There were actual major improvements before the unfortunate events. So, the above are three major suggestions from myself and older players. I'll send the original posts soon as well, when I get more, should that even happen... Now, issues of community. I, as the main server greeter, that people simply don't stick except for a few. New people I greet and try to explain things to simply don't stay longer than a <<happy baby seal>> week and I am tired of that. Now, as to the reasons...I've noticed a positive change in that very recently, people started to involve new people in casual RP, give them IC tours...but that's not what always happens. Some new people get locked out on day one and leave on day two. That is <<I f*cking hate this way of censoring>> vey demotivating, especially for me. So yes, established players and staff should, in my opinion: 1)Be warmer and more accepting, interact more with new people. 2)If something stupid is being done, like running around with weapons, etc...Try to explain them what RP is in tells and give them a goddamn break, they're noobs. Several of more established SCoDers started out with weapons out and lights over their heads, now what? Help people who don't seem to know what they're doing. I am frankly tired of almost always being the only one who does that. 3.)Do not meet their forum suggestions, even if they make no f*cking sense to you, I repeat do not EVER meet them with snobbism and coldness especially if those players are not just new to the server but to nwn2 as a game. Give them a break, they're f*cking noobs. As a conclusionl, lack of sticking new players is partially to blame for the staleness and apathy. A community without fresh blood will just rot, even if we actually change the event and player group policy. -Thanks, Rep <_<

Just a quick one while I am on break. ((Yes first time I announced this one, but some IRL stuff came up)) I do feel a big part of it also has to do with the 'overcentralization' of everything. 99% all rp takes place at khazeets due to its central location. In return a large amount of RP opportunities lay untouched due to people being too lazy to make an attempt ((yes I said it, a big part of it is apathy, but I do feel a portion is just people tend to ignore everything that wouldn't put them above everyone else.)) Also I do feel another part of the issue is when new people try to join and such, all they ever see is everyone with their epic levels on and it discourages them further. Want new blood to stay around? Go and log onto something in their range (make a new character if you have to.)and actually try and get them involved instead of just feeding your own egos. Trying to get new players involved is probably the biggest reason I have a wide selection of characters. A lot of RP can start if people actually took the time to make the grind more of an RP type of thing instead of just a damn rush to lvl 30. Then there is the fact that a lot of events tend to cater to already established characters which also chases off the new people. It goes back to the no one does stuff in my own range, everyone is much too powerful for me to even RP with them belief. There is also the fact that people just tend to outright ignore the events all together. Players ask for shit to do but every time someone actually wants to get something started everyone will outright ignore you and your attempts all while bitching and whining bout nothing to do. (Yes, I see it constantly, and it has outright gotten on my last nerve.) So yeah, thank you Mr. O for making the post I thought of making not so long ago. It needed to be said. |

About the factions I mean the planescape factions, it'll be nice if player had more IG freedom to manage and progress within them because now the point systems really locks any attempt for any player to get at the rank of factotum or play any important role within it's ranks and it's usually hard to accomplish them in any case. In this case, player made guilds are just more efficient because they can imagine and create instead of waiting for faction points. |

Rep pretty much hit the nail on the head with that (DemonAbyss too now that I read his), the only thing that I can add to it is the affect of low level characters coming in, trying not to play a powerbuild character as to have an interesting character with a cool build when they eventually reach that oh so elusive thirtieth level. Then they hit undersigil. Oh, this is pretty easy, is the usual response, untill they try out a plane or two, and they realize they can't do sh*t with this crappy build that doesn't get it's uber-epic ability until 25th level. This wouldn't be such a problem if finding a group of 1) people who don't sit around the bazaar and rp the whole day away 2) grind the hell out of carceri in an attempt to gain more gold than any other player just to rub it in their face and look down on every other player who joins 3) Aren't already in an intrusive clique of lvl 30 players that makes up half the server and is the problem with other people not having fun, but also provides the oh-so hopeless drive of "Well maybe if I make a new character and try and be like them I can have friends and actually have fun!" wears off, you're left with a horrible feeling that you simply can't do anything but sit around the bazaar untill you grow a beard Dumbledore would be jealous of, or decide to go try out a different server. I've tried making alternative accounts, waiting at the bazaar, grinding in undersigil, but whatever I do to try and meet people and get involved, it always seems to be shot down by the fact that everyone who plays is an epic character, or is just out of my level range off in a plane I've never even heard of. This leads to groups of players getting an idea for a new character every once in a blue moon once they happen to get bored, which opens about a six hour window for other noobs to come into the server, get their act together, and hit undersigil, to actually meet with the group, and maybe actually make it into the server. The above reason is the usual way I actually get my characters to level. All the characters I play that are high level, started out like that. I tried countless others only to be bored and not make that six hour window. The only problem is I don't know how to fix it, and unless the rest of the ancient players or the ones who run countless circles around carceri decide to try new things, then it's not going to be fixed. To me, this is the 1 major problem as to why SCod only gets 1 out of every sixty noobs that try it out. And thank you Mr. O. for finally having the guts to bring up the issue.

I hate to say I told you so, but I did. The server is going down a downward spiral because of a lack of motivational purpose, when someone does something here it does nothing to contribute to anything. You sit around asking why people stick to their own groups, why they dont get others invovlved? Because of the atmosphere. The server has created what I like to call a half-friendly atmosphere, people talk, care about each other, but they do so within secluded circles of friends and ooc enemies because they dont want to rp with each other, theres no middle ground. If you have a situation like that, your only going to end with borders being drawn, lines being made and not crossed and nobody moving on. Ive tried to motivate alot of people in the past to do something, "alot" and I am tired of being told I havent, Ive even made several server moving vilians that have had server wide reputation, at the cost? My friendship oocly and some people treating me as if I was a jackass as much as my char was. That actually put me off wanting to make villians in the end, because people were making it impossible to do anything with my char. Ultimatley it made me feel like no matter what I did, someone would just ruin it and even the bad guy needs something he does to last as much as the good guy. The good guys get it way to easy here, when the bad guy does something, they always stop them, why cant the bad guy win for once? Why cant the bad guy actually have the ultimate victory? Nothing exciting ever happens because nothing disasterous is allowed to. Some idiot always has to go swooping in like a bad-ass to save the day rather than letting the disaster happen and picking up the pieces of the aftermath. And the world would be very boring if there wasnt a problem with it, lets face it. Sometimes its important to let the villian have their fun too, it means they got to do something and the antagonist is always the driving force behind disaster and chaos. Part of the problem with Sigil and why it relates to the above is that no antagonists have ever been ALLOWED to antagonise anyone without fear of being pissed on by some high level 30 bad-ass trying to show off how great they are instead of letting them have their fun with their friends. Thats exactly "why" I keep people out of my rps now, because some people I know I just wont like to rp with even if they can be likeable oocly. The same reason applies to why people keep me out of their rps. And its not just me, or them, its everyone, ive seen groups being formed, rivalries being made, but its not IC, its a snidy, shadowy game of who can be the better badass- who can show off their wares more. Its a coldwar of egos trying to outsmite the other and it is tiring, bland and needs to go from the server entirley. If you want to make things move, let the people trying to move it do something instead of constantly being afraid of loosing what you've already built. You can call me a hypocrit for that sentance, some of you will, for the fears I had of loosing things. But the truth is I never feared loosing my characters, I feared being forced to stop progress from happening, stop people developing. We have what one player called "engagers" on this server, people who stand out (nothing in a harsh way meant for thos ethat dont) by doing things to get other people involved in them. Thats what we need more of, people that do things, and get people involved into those things, and make them feel appriciated for being in those things. Thats why as an engager I try to make a story centralise around the event, not my character, if my char is part of that event there is usually things going on around them that are more important to it. I try to engage stories with people without having to dm so that I can show people what it is your trying to promote Otyugh. The fact is though, as I said, people dont want to be moved, they dont want to loose what they have now, they fear creativity more than crave it, because the more creative something is the less control they have over it. Its easy to stop creativity with a harsh wall when things get too tough. Its easy not to adapt to a situation and find a way around it, thats what Ive had to do all my life as a disabled person, its whawt people should be doing as roleplayers. When shit happens to your character, its not the end, its the beginning. Its a symbol of a moment in their life where something happened to evolve them, not something happening to stop them progressing forever. Maybe it teaches them a new outlook? And maybe they return to their old outlook after future events happen to them? Why should things be ever lasting, perminent? Stagnation will destroy this server. It has destroyed it. People need to grow some, stop being afraid of loosing their badasses glorified epicosity, be ready to take a few hits in the future and start manning up when it happens. It tires me to no end that people complain when their chars get hurt yet they are more than happy to piss on other peoples chars. It tires me that people tell me I do all of those things yet fail to see they themselves do it in turn. People need to engage more, they need to be more moving, more coursing. Does that mean they have to pvp with people? No, what it means is they have to DO something that involves people. It does not have to lead to people fighting people, it doesnt even have to involve that kind of interaction. And if thats all people see in player rp then they really are shallow indeed. Open your minds people, to the new possibilities, the prospects, the potential that can be reaped from your greatest and most beautiful gift, your imagination. You are roleplayers, making characters that you never will be, doing things you can never do, that doesnt mean you have to ruin other peoples fun to do it, you can engage them into your fun and make it their fun too! Your humans, beautiful humans and you can do beutiful things as humans, so do them, dont fear them, embrace them. This is a world you escape to to get away from the plight of reality, to achieve things reality cannot allow because it will not, because it restricts you. Dont be real, be outragious be moving, do moving things, bring people into your moving things. Weather your character is on a crusade to unmake a balor or to bring down the heavens to their foundations, bring people into those events, like minded characters, people with a passion to follow as you, engage. Believe in yourselves for gods sake and do something with yourselves, dont just sit there, dont just wait, DO, something, because destiny isnt going to come to you, YOU, must carve destiny. -Epic Speech over, sighs- The point is.... do something, dont just think, do it, and dont destroy other peoples happiness to make your own, bring their happiness by making your own! DO something about it! |

Hey! Semi-new guy here. (been playing for just over a week by now), and I have to say; i'm not really seeing the whole "unfriendly to noobs" thing. Everyone has been great here! So much nicer than most other PW's (HI BALDURS GATE!), and there seems to be far less of the problem where people behave like assholes and abuse their powers while going 'oh its justified because its IC!" . Anyway; the roleplaying has been great so far. I suppose there may be some of the whole niche' circles going on, but thats going to happen anywhere way I see it. It certainly hasn't been a problem for myself or any of my friends who have come along. The one thing I will say is that I do wish DM sessions were a little more present and started off with more hooks than "stuff is happening to NPC's that may or may not concern your character... only way to find out is randomly follow and ask!" . Now this isn't to say that the events (the few I played in) were not fun; just that the hooks ought to draw in the players characters a little more directly. Just my two cents there. Again, I personally still found things interesting enough to jump into. Other than that, Sigil is the only other server besides my regular stop that has managed to hold my attention, and like I said, far as i've played everyone's been great. Definately sticking around here. |

Mr. O, I have an idea of what you are feeling, I think, having been there myself some time back. My personal solution was to stop playing NWN2 for a while. I had thought I was pretty much done, but as it turns out, after a couple of years, I ended up being pulled back in as a developer for another server. Anyway, I respect what you are feeling and think I can understand in at least some small way. I guess what I would like to tell you is this - I like this server. It has been several years since I played NWN2, and a couple more since I logged back in here but you know what? I like what I have found. I have found 00C and IC friendly players. I have found DM's willing to help and answer question, as well as willing to let me just explore and enjoy the lovely areas (after all, having built a good number of things, there is an extra level of appreciation in seeing the methods and tricks used to get a troublesome toolset to work well). So, maybe there are times when there are only ten folks logged on, and I don't always find a group to go out leveling with and I'm not in the middle of any major plot lines etc. I'm effectively a "new player" here, even though I was around when you first went live with Sigil (server vault must have been wiped somewhere along the way *shrug*). But you know what? I think SCoD is a role play server, and that even if there are not a ton of folks logged in all the time it really does not matter. What does matter is that the folks I have come across have been more than willing to play their roles with a thought in mind of how they might play with and include me. That is kinda rare, in my humble opinion, and I hope that even if you should choose to take an extended break as I once did (even though I was thinking I quit all together), that you will choose to keep this door into your living room gaming table open for us to visit, and play pretend - Gildren (developer TFR, DB) |

Taurus Dagger night, That’s because you’ve met a few of the newbies who joined not long before you did who took the brunt of the apathy and made a fuss about it. Infact The entire Scarn squad is no longer playing.. One of our members left because of the attitudes they were exposed to. He has in fact told me that He will NOT be coming back to the server because of to many big Egos.. |

a few weeks back We as a group actually thought about leaving once before which is when i contacted Agony Aunt about the issues... but were convinced to stick around only to be treated poorly because of our ignorance of the game and the server, along with how stagnant and one sided the economy is here. All you epic lvl characters have the money to spend and don’t see or recall the hardships the lower level characters have to deal with to get anywhere.. but I’ve brought this up before in another thread and only got told to deal with it and learn to play pretty much. The reason I’m sticking around is because of health conditions that are preventing me from playing anything requiring keeping track of a crap ton of information on the screen. I’ve still been having issues keeping up with RP and text but I’m doing my best and have been enjoying what I can with those folks who have shown interest and have been patient enough with me as well as my typos and have not berated me or corrected me harshly. I would really love to get my friends to come back to this server and meet the folks that are willing to be patient with new players and help us out to some extent as well as to show him this really isn’t that bad of a server.. Yeah it needs a lot of work and a massive transfusion of new players and way of thinking and acting... But some compassion toward new players would be nice… especially those who are trying to help out and not be told that we are whining and acting like babies.. The scarn squad is a pnp game from a rather unknown setting that folks keep thinking is a home brew but isn’t. Its infact a S&S and Whitewolf setting from back in 2,000. Infact I know Neelis has been given crap constantly for his character both ic and out. Because of what he is and how he has built his character. He has even gone and re rolled it several times to fix the character’s build to be viable since he had the issue of not being able to find groups or folks willing to group with him. I can understand IC reasons… but still… the ooc riping apart of his character was downright uncalled for. So all in all it’s the current established characters not approving of anything different.. imo some of the IC harassment we recived especially him was very nearly close to OOC harassment. We were very surprised to find that No DM even attempted to step in to correct this issue.. Instead we are told to take screenshots of everything that bothers us.. or we think is unfair treatment.. After a while it get tedious and annoying to have to do so . I could continue but MR. O but our attempt to help with the new player guide and such apparently has not helped in bringing to light the issues new players have.. I’d suggest re reading it and looking at some of the responses we got when we were replying to you. |

except the guy that feels obliged to post "I did!", part of me thinks starting anew after most have left to be answer which on one side leans toward "vault wipe" kind of deal (Now a lot of you go; Grawr! Get the f**k off! That's stoopid thing that kills the server, yar yar yar) but that obviously wouldn't be a good thing and could possibly be terminal approach or just waiting it out could escalate to further apathy.
