Why are people not interested in Factions, even more established and regular players? It's simple...Lets take a book which swaps its chapters around randomly each time you read it. However, in all of said chapters the main characters are doing f*ck all or the plot wouldn't make sense. Now, no matter how 'preserved' and loyal to some canon that book, it's still a f*cking boring book. People who join Factions simply for the sake of RPing out the philosophy, etc don't find anyone to RP faction-related things with IG...they try to recruit, may be at times even succesfully but in most cases it's a vicious circle of disinterest.

The actual problem with factions is that people can hardly have means to develop things within it, and that there are almost no benefits of begin within them. No items, no events, no prestige, no political advantage as it should be. Players factions on the opposite can provide such things. Factioned players should have advantages lone wolves do not have, Sigil isn't about everyone begin equal anyway. The points system is completely broken because it require regular DM survey, which isn't actually done unless on forums it's not a dynamic process at all and one could acquire anything they need by grinding instead of RPing actually.

The other side of the medal with player factions, is that it's not sane to leave some players who're total control freak IC and OCC any full control of anything, since I've came I've seen some new players challenging old ones, all ended up like in a mafia story because old players have resources to put the presure on newbies to the point of even forcing them of leaving the server by pissing them OCCly. Factotums are untouchables, because a lot ego filled of players would like to claim the king title.

Since I have started playing here I have seen Zero changes to the server that were brought on by players and their events/stories. Not one. That simply shows that the keepers of the server are completely unwilling to permit the players to have an effect on the world they play in… a

What about the formation of the Weary Spirit Infirmary, and the destruction of the Undersigil Village Temple? (that's just off the top of my head, I can probably think of a few more) :P

I stand corrected... still... considering the amount of "Epic grade" stories/plots run over the last two years... you'd think there would be something to show. The server still shows an amazing unwillingness to permit players the chance to change things. Most times you'd have an easier time cutting out one of your own kidneys with a spoon than getting something changed around here.

Half of the factions don't even have an active player base.... how about we stop poking the dead dog with a stick already? (and Darkrob already mentioned the flaws with the point system, is that you either write a novel on forums or get lucky with a DM seeing what you did >.> And that's just unrewarding on the long run IMO.)

And in terror they run and hide,
From the shadows of old we rise,
Awakened, from the dark!

Over the ancient ruins we fly,
Where the old kings go to die,
And the new kingdoms rising high,
Awakened, from the dark, dark slumber!"

That was someone else that pointed that out but I agree with it 100%. Getting factionpoints is a pain in the a$$. You literally have to RP on the forum or force a DM to sit in on your IG RP sessions.

Then I go back to my original point, if you're too tired to try, take a break ;) it'll serve thyself and others better. Server loyalty is pointless trait if it is obstruction for enjoyment. No I'm not saying "Bugger off", I'm saying don't force logging in with a grudge and complain if you have no energy of your own.

And to keep with the E-Now theme... weren't most of you against the change happening at all to begin with? Because then it wouldn't be the Hive people knew yada yada, I mean that WAS one of the reasons why it was shut down when it was xD So it doesn't sound like best example to go with. . .

When has online roleplaying really been all that much about becoming the king, emperor, ruler of twelve kingdoms or the biggest and most exquisite person in existence anyway? Unless we of course think stuff like ToR or something where every class X finds first lightsaber ever :P single player games are really made for that, and what happens after you finish single player story? The game ends. Know why it ends? Because the story ends, there's nothing to achieve after that point, then you get new game. It has really always been about the journey and 'personal' storyline, not world shattering epic matter, but growth of the character by events occuring around them and thus shaping the character, not so much the surrounding.

So basically it was fairly pointless to come out with our concerns and our opinions on the stagnation? Seems to me most of what everyone is saying is simply getting dismissed with a "there there" and a pat on the head.

No offence Mr O, I like you like a brother but don't start threads looking for peoples input if that input isn't going to change a thing.

Actually I never started this thread in premises of asking input, though I knew there would be anyway thus in general discussion rather than announcement, I started this thread to simply voice out the public secret. I can see how that question in the end could lead to such conclusion, but it was rhetorical in nature. I mostly said that do what you feel is best for you to get revitalized, I don't know what it is to each individual.

I didn't ask input since it's always the three same things no matter what is done previously:
- Content
- Events
- Impact

I just don't believe they are the underlying issue, they are tools, ones which are even occasionally used but they don't seem to be THAT major fix as people make them out to be.

Yet pointless bazaar banter provides absolutely nothing. Sure it can be a starting point to get the framework of a characters personality, but it is the big events that happen that are what causes character growth. Pointless banter at Khazeets does nothing to develop a character IMO. Sure, if its relating to some sort of plotline or faction stuff, then I really don't mind. Instead 99% of it is just the pointless banter you would hear like at a fair or tavern, but even then. People could at least send people on jobs or something, but nope, not a damn thing. There are people who would actually like to do things other than said pointless banter but that is what everything winds up devolving into because people that want to do stuff see nothing but the pointlessness of even trying to get the playerbase to even respond. As I have said in an earlier post, you can do everything you can to 'liven' things up and give people an excuse to go somewhere other than the bazaar but all you ever get out of it is getting completely ignored. Or if you are a new blood to the server, the resident 'oldies' just quash any and all efforts, especially if you are RPing an evil character.

I've seen/heard that happen quite a few times, and that is NOT cool.

As I've said (possibly not in this thread), I'm not fan of the bar RP... but why does it have to BE RP in bar? xD it's not inconceavable to conduct roleplay out of bar, we didn't even always have a bar in the server to begin with.

And people lacking enthusiasm to the roleplay put out by other players especially is one of the causes for this thread. If you ignore the other players roleplay, effort and attempts... that is exactly what is part of this problem, that is exactly why everyone expects DMs to be personal entertainers... but it hasn't always been this way so I KNOW that there is better way for this to happen. That's what I'd hope people get more enthusiastic about... to get involved with others, that's where the intrigue truly is, often far greater and more immersive than a DM event can possibly get... characters that you have learned to know from a time before 15 minutes ago can have so much greater impact to your characters life than something made up for an event.

Naturally same time more mindful and not trying to crush others with unfair force, but rather scale things to be interesting by scaling the dangers unless the other has expressed wish to be victim to enhance their personal story.

Depends how you define 'ourselves' if by it you mean all of server then yes, but by the multi dot expression I think it's safe to make presumption that you distinguish DMs + admin from the players. Well I don't.

I'd hope to alter peoples perspective to the roleplaying, to the experience of gaming in multiplayer. To bring back the intrigue to other players effort and cast away the detrimental judgementalism as well as the grim jadedness of having done everything.

I'd go as far as say that if all one sees in SCoD is in negative context... take a break, play or do something else for while.

Try something new you've never tried before, pick a new race, take on different gender, take on something you assume you're really bad at... whatever it is that works for you.

No need to be evil, just a bit ambitious or a bit antagonistic.

@Mr. O

The problem is about people involvement as much but also a structural one, the inertia of the players is proportional to the inertia of the game world around them, be it roleplay wise or gameplay. Factions are useless because there's nothing implemented in them to make them worth interest, unless you relay know planescape setting well. On the other side player factions have almost no impact either which is also quite frustrating because there should be ways for creating things within the cannon, or it's not an RPG, it's a novel.

For those who are mentioning faction points, it is noted and i'm bouncing ideas round with the other DMs and admins as to how we can improve the system and its just one example of how your comments are being listened to and noted, even if we disagree.

There are plenty of good ideas in this thread (along with some not-so-good ideas) and maybe some will bring forth fruit.

Overall though, from what i'm reading its a case of old players bored, new players enjoy but can feel intimidated by the oldies... which really does kinda make you think perhaps it would be better for the oldies to go play elsewhere for a while... Mr_O can lead the expedition :D
