I've attempted to run several PBMB (Play by Messageboard) games but they failed. Mainly due to people suddenly disappearing and all. I'd do it again if I knew the players were dedicated.

Yep it's very hard to make a PBMB because it's slow and if people aren't dedicated they lose attention quickly. Games take x100 the time they could take in PnP.
- Kala Ta'Kan : Factor of the Beleivers of the Source
- Ash (Kazuko Yudeoshi)
- Safana Washedan
- and many other alts.

Indeed. The way for playing online that I liked was a combination of skype and gametable. A little slower than normal PnP but not by much. Its just annoying getting everything set up (including tiles) if you are DMing.

The Dwarf Campaign thus far is more or less what I call a Minecraft Campaign. The party is there on this unexplored continent trying to solve a mystery (An expedition troop from their church went missing.). In the meantime they have to make base camp and survive while incursions are made. At night however... the land basically spews out undead. It was a rule that if you make a character for it that you have to specialize in some sort of profession.

We also have a Non-magic Oriental campaign going on. Its a completely custom battle system. You just roll to see if you hit, then a percentage to see where and whether its a graze, full blow, organ damage and whatnot. There are no classes, just the basic human + fighting style that determines what combat abilities you have. Its also a low HP campaign that incorporates bleed damage. I currently play a Drunken Master that uses various gauntlets that deal different damage types.

We are also considering a D20 Modern Zombie Apocalypse campaign that would be in rotation with the Oriental one.
Characters
-Moriarcis: Lvl 20 Necromancer
-Ordethus: Lvl 20 (21) Telepath Warlock/Alienist
-Orionis: Lvl 8 Dirge of Tiamat
-Zaed Nahalis: Lvl 28 Hextorite Blademaster
-Skor Addamar: Lvl 22 Ex-Collector
-Ven: Lvl 9 (10) Old School Assassin
-Vai'aian: Lvl 18 (20) Zerth Monk

For those running their games online, one thing that makes games go faster, I find, is to simply not use a gametable at all. Since virtual tables often take some time to setup, it's usually easier to just describe the scene and keep the battlefield from being too complex. Make it memorable, but not complex.

For example, in my last session, the party was being stalked by some goblins riding... giant flying insects. They were in the woods in a cold area, and when they finally noticed that something was following them, they made the first move. I told them how many feet away their enemy generally was (80 feet) instead of telling them exactly how many feet away each of the riders was. I didn't worry about laying out specific obstacles (such as trees) so much, instead simply telling them "traveling between your position and the enemy's by foot will be slower due to the wooded terrain." By making these things more general, the game tends to flow faster, making online play quicker.
An exercise in lack of restraint:
