So yeah, joystiq and most of the other webs are announcing it, TOR is going free to play.

Granted, it was a terrible game to some and to others it was a potent game that still cost too much to be worth the time, but its going free all the way to the max level.

According to the devs the f2p model will allow you to reach level 50 and play all 8 class stories, there will be restrictions that can be removed via microtransaction.

There will also be an option to subscribe, giving the players "cartel points" to spend on asthetics, special customisable gear and small boons to help likley in the form of xp boosts.

I dunno about my opinion of it, I liked TOR for its story alone, but the gameplay was certainly not my favourate on an mmo.

Some might like it, if you do, thats cool, but if you've never had a chance to try it because it was sub based, you might wanna try it this fall, as the core content will more or less be F2P.

Will it make any difference whether you already bought the game or not?

I know when LOTRO went F2P everyone who had a sub for more than a year wound up becoming a founding memeber. They get all of the benefits of a full subscription without having to pay for it.

It only took 8 months for this to happen. For those of you who haven't played, its literally a carbon copy of WoW with less features and with a thin layer of Star Wars applied on the top.

All aboard the RMS Tortanic!

Lies. Everything isn't a WoW clone and the bits you may spot are there because successful models are emulated. I never got the WoW feel at all. Felt more like an old republic game with an online component.

I'm sad to see it fail. So much potential...

I dont really agree Kree but its nice someone liked it.

In my opinion it was a great concept with a terrible way of delivering it.

They tried in every way possible to "copy" wow and they did it with the worst team possible, the guys who made warhammer online.

Oh yeah, like WAR was a staggering success that didnt end up being reduced to an F2P 4 server knock off.

Oh wait-

TOR had several problems from its announcement:

- It was subscription based.
- It was trying to milk the success of a singleplayer rpg franchise and a well known film franchise that had already been done-to-death.
- It tried to be nostalgic, instead of new.
- Ultimatley, it kept all the things that people hated about old mmos and shouldnt have had them there in the first place. (The Holy Trinity, Forced Grouping, Compedetive End Game rather than Co-operative).
- The End game was clearly not there, TOR paniced and realised they had to make content for level 50 so they basically just gave all the instance runs level 50 hardcore modes which at vanillia launch were broken to hell.

That, is my ultimate opinion of the things that went wrong, but its not all doom and gloom:

- It still had an engaging two choice storyline which allowed you to interact with characters from 8 different perspectives, all with a unique story that ranged all the way to level 50 (kudos to bioware).
- It had a nice, stylised graphical look that came across as bland in some places, but more memorable in others (alderaan).
- The ability to customise items of any level with gear upgrades to boost them to higher level was nice.
- The race choices were diverse enough though the class choices restrained alot untill they let all races become unlockable.
- The unlock system might have worked if the cost wasnt insanley expensive or you gained nothing from gaining legacy levels.
- Legacy, as a concept, is admirable, as a deliverance, is not.

So yeah, im balancing the pros and cons and saying what I did and did not like, so people dont always say im just a pessimistic git.

The truth is, TOR tried too hard to be WoW with another pillar, story. It even admitted that during its design instead of going for what GW2 went for, a revolutionary design philosophy that actually is, attractive to keep playing.

Still, since its going free to play there will still be an rp server at least to view every once in a blue moon when I feel like rollin' a Jedi.

All modern MMORPGs trace their lineage back to Neverwinter Nights.

You mean this? :-P

http://www.bladekeep.com/nwn/
"From the realms below we ride,
And in terror they run and hide,
From the shadows of old we rise,
Awakened, from the dark!

Over the ancient ruins we fly,
Where the old kings go to die,
And the new kingdoms rising high,
Awakened, from the dark, dark slumber!"

Yea! That's the one!

Although I guess it might be more accurate to say that modern MMORPGs began with Everquest. Either way, if you say something is a WoW clone, you need to remember WoW, for all its quality and popularity, mirrors countless other games released around its time; one among many in the 3D MMORPG rush.

Entirley true Silver, but the reason its called a wow clone is because wow was successful, it was the only one that actually took off and lasted. Granted, its lost its touch compleatley now after years of glory, but during that time it was the first mmo to intergrate gameplay and questing into social interaction. At the time, it was a revolutionary formulae that worked, and blizzard was already popular with battlenet and Warcraft 3.

So why is every WoW Clone Bad?

Because its the same reason every Diablo clone can only be a Diablo clone, or every Command and Conquer clone can only be a clone of the origional.

You cant copy success, you can only make something alike it, which eventually reminds the players that did play the origional why they liked it in the first place. They become cynical, they look for weaknesses in the armor, they look for an excuse to say to themselves "diablo was better than this".

Some games surpass the origional (Torchlight) and others (Hellgate) dont even scratch it.

The problem is many people make the mistake of milking the old. However, games like GW2 added something new, they did what most developers SHOULD be doing. They recognised what worked and took out what didnt, but instead of leaving nothing new, they ADDED something innovating that kept interest and still does for alot of people.

Its what most Devs should do when making games, mmo or otherwise. Success was successful because the competition made something good. Instead of copying that success, make something better and stick with it.

Yea, except for like, every other non-console MMORPG ever.

What're you talking about saying WoW was the first to have social interaction, gameplay and questing together? There weren't many MMORPGs that didn't have that, Cap.

And you're right about Torchlight, 'tis most awesome, but it's awesome because it's not a Diablo clone, it's a Diablo sequel and Diablo 3 is the clone. Reason being that the people who made Diablo left to make Torchlight. Looking forward to Torchlight 2 too ^-^; Got it pre-ordered already!
