You need to have sneak attack dice from another source for them to work.

We danced among the lightning bolts,

Oh boy. So Miraie was wrong on that.. It seemed like a perfect set up too. Ranger and Assassin.

I can go back a level right? Need to get back into the OOC room.

Yeah, I discovered this myself on a different server where I was setting up a blackguard/assassin. I had my 8 levels of assassin before taking BG, and as soon as I qualified for sneak attack through BG all the assassin stuff started working. So you could conceivably grab a level of rogue at your next level-up and your death attack will start working.

Yeah, I was contemplating a Ranger (13), Assassin (9), and Rogue (8) since I may need it after all.

It's a lil' bit messy but it's not too bad I think.

Hmmm I've never had a problem with Death attack when just alone as I have used the infamous 21ranger 9 assassin build.

If you want to be a crossbow sniper you can do it there are some absurdly powerfull crossbow....but to snipe you got to be within 30 ft of your opponent cause you have to be within 30 ft to get sneak damage.

Yeah, I know about the 30 feet ranged limit for sneak attacks.

Just wish I could stay Ranger + Assassin, but the death attacks don't work without Rogue.

Are you absolutely certain? My death attacks seem to be working as a ranger/assassin. Will update briefly, performing some additional testing.

Ah. Testing delayed. I believe you won't actually see the sneak attack thing when using a ranged weapon, but I have noticed a steady increase in damage with my 4d6 death attack dice. I may also paralyze the occasional foe by initiating combat from stealth (won't work during combat, I believe).

Edit: Did some more testing in Mask of the Betrayer. The Barrow Guardians report they are Immune to Sneak Attacks when I accost them with my ranger/assassin trickery. As they should.

I actually just made a build... that I would say is a solid build to stand behind someone and plunk them... :)

I have done some extended testing with my 17 ranger, 8 assassin, 1 tiefling bow person. I chose the Abyss because it features Shadow Demons, who are immune to sneak attacks and critical hits.

A) I have no sneak attack dice from any other class, but I am getting a steady damage increase when sneak attacking. I do not get "sneak attack" messages, but the combat log notifies me if something is immune to them. I get the paralyze from death attack (see B).
B) When I initiate combat on mobs that are not in combat, the paralyze triggers as it should.
C) Shadow Demons in the Abyss give me the immune to sneak attacks message. My damage is lower when trying to sneak attack. This is as expected.
D) I still have to be Very Close for my sneak attacks to register. I prefer to be almost close enough to melee, if possible.

Tl;dr: you do not need sneak attack dice from another class to benefit from Death Attack. This is true in melee as well.

Ps. I am not sure about that link. It does not seem to lead me to a build. Maybe I am just silly? Who knows! It says the build is not publically available.

Psps. Maybe an archer who relies on manyshot a lot could actually make good use of crossbows. It only affects the first 3 attacks, after all. I want to test. Does anyone have any experience in this regard?

It says the build is not publicly available, so you may wish to toggle that on.

I have some minor comments.

A) Epic precision is necessary if you go for bows. This is sensible. At least if your build relies on sneak attacks this heavily. Not so necessary if you go for dual-wielding instead (ruin weapons), which should mean more damage as well. But a shortbow archer could be fun to play. Decisions, decisions.
B) You have manyshot. That is good. AB might be a bit of a problem with Manyshot in high level areas, but party buffs can help you there.
C) Dodge may not be necessary. It does not look like you are building for Epic Dodge, but you could consider that as well. A nice defensive option alongside Mirror Image. Not necessary, though. Mirror Image does a lot already.
D) Hide, Move Silently, Craft Weapon (the best arrows, dc 30 to make), Tumble and UMD are all skills I recommend. Some of them are fairly obvious. You can get a lot of utility from UMD, especially. Open Lock is useful often, as is Disable Device.

Hm. So you tested it out..

Alright, I'm going to remove a level from my char to remove the rogue class I just added.

Also, whats up with sneak attacks range? You mention you have to be very close for it to register? And I notice sometimes you (or a pet summon, like that panther) can sneak attack an enemy in the face. Does this server adjust sneak attack in anyway?

Edit: Also, are you able to de-level in this game? I removed my exp for this level, but I still have the rogue class because it didn't delevel me, it just reset the exp to "zero" for this level. If I go out and die, lose exp, will I lose my latest level up so I can remove rogue?

the water from the river styx should be able to get rid of one level if you "taste it" but I had this problem too on one of my alts (Shala) and she had to drink twice to get a delevel down one level.

Take one level takes all your xp from that current level, resetting it to the beginning of said level. If you want to go back to the level prior, you have to go back to the start of that one.
