Elementals In Bazaar Event Feedback

I want to offer some feedback at the event at the Bazaar with the Water Elementals.

I want to say simply that spawning elementals at random in the middle of the main RP area with no warning wasn't such a good idea and personally ruined a night of RP for me.

Naturally my level 2 unprepared character died at the half-a-dozen elementals that were randomly spawned around her but I couldn't even RP that my (succubus) character simply flew away instead of dying because I didn't get a response from the EM to ask for permission.
It would seem like Godmodding, personally, to do it anyway.

It wasn't that my character died in an event, it was the random interruption of RP that pretty much put me out of the mood for any further RP, tonight.

The funny part was that they spawned right outside AND inside of the bar.
They should have been spawned at the transitions or the sewer entrance and people that wanted to fight them, could run there instead.

Or send a server OOC and IC message that said something like: "You hear noises at the XYZ area" ((event for XYZ level chars))".

Spawning them right at the bar was silly in my opinion.
Some people just want to RP instead of grinding to avoid dying at random at the bar.

This could have gone better unfortunately, I believe. =)

This is reasonable feedback. I can understand the frustration of dying out of blue, as well as being engaged in combat without any prior warning. Indeed, it is often wise to allow a few checks to get player attention even in the case of an ambush. Since I was not there to see how the event progressed, I can only speculate. My advice is to allow players a short window of escape before Something Bad happens, however (although a few people relying on the safety of the Bazaar as an AFK zone might still end up a little disappointed ^^'). I'm very sorry to hear that the event ruined your night.
Feel free to prod me with questions and other things!

Found it fun myself, thanks to the EM who ran it!

I think if you sent a tell to ask to work with the dm/em running with an event and say you was not interested to participate they could got you out of there. We should not be afraid to say something .

The bazaar is a terrible place to be if you're expecting uninterrupted RP, that's the beauty (and randomness) of Sigil... be glad it wasn't a Xao! :P

I wasn't there though, so I can't offer an opinion.
Feedback is always nice though, and I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

The attack that happened just prior, inside the inn had some emoting just before it started. It did seem to come out of the blue.

It's not that my RP was interrupted. I wouldn't mind if a DM NPC run to the Bazaar, screamed that someone unleashed elementals and called the PCs to do something.
Even if it was in the same area like near the transitions or sewers.

It was a pretty blunt approach for an event and it felt to me like "Oh, you want to RP? Too bad! Fight or die and lose xp and gold because 4-6 elementals spawned in front of you!"
Not every character in Sigil is epic level with +5 items or wants to be forced into a fight. =P

All I know of this is what I saw in this thread. However...

If ever you find your character killed by the actions of a DM or EM, do not respawn. Simply ask them to ressurect you, as it takes almost no effort to do so. Particularly if the death was something you couldn't avoid (and a L2 character attacked by a powerful elemental definitely falls into this category).

And hopefully when they get that sort of request they'll also realize they're doing something they shouldn't be doing. ;)

While I understand your frustration, a person should never, ever, expect uninterrupted RP in a public place. If not by DM, then your fellow players also looking to interact and RP! If it was a character-defining private moment, it probably should go to a private area.

The ability to have random world events and stories is what separates a PW from an MMO where people RP. How boring would it be if everything was static, expected, and planned?

Who care if the events weren't what you expected tonight. Roll with it! Who cares if you die? My main is a mid-level rogue, she dies in every event. :P Nobody will think less of your character if you roll with that too! Not knowing what's going to happen every time you log in is what makes the world feel alive, and it's why we play on private servers, not ESO or Guild Wars, which are far prettier and more fun, mechanically.

I'm not trying to beat you up, I'm just talking about the big picture. If you really want private RP, you can go to private areas. But let's not discourage our awesome volunteer staff of DMs from running ad hoc events for the people that want them. DMing is a hard, frustrating, and thankless job, and we should appreciate them and offer constructive feedback whenever possible. :D

Ninja Edit: Re-reading, it sounds like I was implying that this isn't constructive feedback. It absolutely is! I may not agree with your points, but threads like this are important.

Like I said, it's not that my RP was interrupted. It was the random spawning of elementals out of the blue right in front of us with no prior warning or IC/OOC setup.
It's not like I knew the dangers and still entered an event willingly.

Any kind of RP is great, if it's IC, I can certainly roll with it. I'm not new to PWs or events. :P

And I'm certainly not discouraging the EMs or the staff, I'm trying to offer feedback and constructive criticism. :)
More events and DM interractions are certainly welcome and needed!

It's just that the way it happened seemed tactless as another player, that I asked, put it.

This is also reasonable. The fact that some players were able to have a good experience does not negate the fact that your experience left much to be desired. This kind of thing is inevitable considering we have multiple, sometimes very different approaches to role-playing. Like Lucadia and Ceremorph suggested, communication is important here. Giving feedback on the forums after the event is also a solid way to express your opinion and preferences.

I admit, if I was a higher-level character (or on my mid-level vampire alt) , with actual gear, I wouldn't mind it and even enjoy it.

I just happened to experience it from the side of the low-level characters that were forced into an unwinnable scenario that felt like being thrown into the ocean, without warning, out of the blue (and into the apparent other blue!).

Things don't need to be planned, but as has been noted, the Bazaar is a hub for all levels and that includes new players whom are just trying to find their place. So having elementals come out without easily accessible warning, whom outmatch their capability to fight might not be the warmest welcome to the server.

I know surprises can be a great narrative development, one which I do support also. But greatest way to inspire narration instead of annoyance is to start it with narration, and some kind of warning that doesn't have a chance to kill even the weak people... or if you do want surprise victims, have there be artificial victims like NPCs, those tossers are everywhere anyway :P it has the same narrative effect also and avoids the low level victims.

That said, it happens. It's not a big deal, nothing irreversible has been done.
