Outsiders could initially be any alignment in SCoD, we changed it to be restricted earlier this year after noticing results. People shouldn't pick fiends if they don't want to deal with fiendish nature or the downsides of becoming a turncoat. There are races that come in a "non-fiend like nature". I'll be hard convince, I for one have seen enough many examples to make me at best skeptical about the exceptions. |

Thats what my approval suggestion stands for. So you can start right from the beginning as chaotic evil. You just have to put some time into your character development. I think you just fear to whrite the history of 2+ years down :P. But since such changes won be forced upon existing characters, you dont have to do this. (Perhaps I get some IC insight into his story sometime )

Eh, I guess I don't see it that way. Never has an Outsider starting with a personality much different than his species norm ever ruined my roleplay. In fact, I usually find it enhances it. It's much more interesting than the standard. The standard is...so standard. And my humans tend to change personalities on a dime, but I intentionally play somewhat insane characters for that very reason. All of my characters should probably just be Chaotic Neutral, even though they tend to be super nice and goodly, just in a preposterous and mad way. |

Oh I agree, if you pick a race, like a fiend but don't act like one, you should still expect the fallout for not acting the way everyone thinks you should. Being a Lawful Good Vampire would be awesome, but you should expect and roleplay the ramifications of other people not accepting that to be true. |

And this is the problem. They generally don't. They get mad when you suggest they're just playing a human that's LG. They get upset when people don't like or believe their character and then they run around spamming "good" abilities in the bazaar. (I have seen both). It's bad. |

I think the argument that "it's pointless to have alignment restrictions in the first place if you can shift alignments with a DM and RP" is similar to a thread someone made a while ago. They wanted to RP an Archmage or something like that, but didn't want to put the "pointless" effort to level up so wanted faster or free leveling. If I'm remembering it correctly, that is. If I'm not, I apologize. It's pretty much a similar case here, only instead of mechanics, we have alignments. Everyone starts at level 1. Every outsider starts at their respective alignment. The backstory could be whatever but it shouldn't give you free benefits automatically just because of their backstory: "My character's backstory is that of an Archmage, I want free levels." And "My character's backstory is that of a redeemed fiend/fallen celestial, so I want a free alignment shift straight from the start." This is what the one-step alignment restrictions now do, they're a compromise. Your character's backstory could already be on their way to redemption (Chaotic Neutral Succubus) or fall (Lawful Neutral celestial) but the journey to the other side should be through in-game character development and step by step, like leveling or accumulation of power. In the case of outsiders, their souls and bodies are literally made of their respective alignment's forces (Law, Good, Chaos, Evil). Their desires, instincts and "DNA" (for lack of a better word) belong to that alignment. They have free will but like real-life humans, genes and instincts are still there and cannot just be turned off at will. And you could argue that outsiders changing their nature is even harder than a human going against their nature. |

as far as i am aware at current fiends can become good through RP, however you cannot start out that way. Although i don't see why you would want to. As for the other races the reason they are not alignment restricted is its far less uncommon, want a good vampire or lich? there are countless examples especially when we pull from every setting (and we do). Or maybe you picked vampire but are playing it as a deathless. You must remember however outsiders are the embodiment of their alignment an exception to this is extremely rare especially fiends as they are not offered freedom. Last time this came up i could find one example of a good fiend and it was due to a paladins soul being bound to it. |

I guess I don't see alignment as really being a benefit? It's just a personal choice. Ziguard started out as an ex-archmage. I had a story prepared to explain why he had fallen so lowly to level 1 again, so I feel like I didn't take advantage of any inappropriate benefits. If someone wants free levels, then yeah, that's wanting something for nothing. Just waning to be a friendly and helpful Tanair though, that really isn't asking for any kind of game benefit. If you want to play a Lawful Good Vampire just to make the most powerful Paladin you can, then that is exploitive. If you want to play a Lawful Good vampire Fighter, where's the exploit? I also thought about it, and there is magic for just about anything. Heck, you can summon generic food with low level magic. I don't see why that wouldn't be possible to summon generic blood to feed a vampire, so having to feed on people is not necessarily something a vampire would have to do if she had access to the right magics. But that's just an afterthought really. |

For me, Good Abyssals and evil celestials simply break the immersion. I've little interest in Demons and devils handing out flowers and I've little interest in seeing Celestials randomly killing innocents. Yes, it's possible but when the city is flooded with them... it completely and utterly ruins it for me. |

I'm sorry you feel that way. That's almost the exact opposite of how I feel about it. The less expected and weirder, the more I get into it. |

I will again argue that playing something a bit outside the norm tends to be more impactful than something so far removed that it's unrecognizable to most people. A properly played exception would not break immersion to me. But I have never seen one. I have seen good humans that happens to look like fiends... which does horribly break immersion. |

Well there's no arguing taste. That's a deeply personal thing that everyone has a right to. My tastes are obviously a bit more eccentric than most. I consider it to be quite a successful session if what happens in game might be something a person on LSD describes as having happened on their acid trip. It's the expected things that bore me. Oh another evil demon plotting to destroy some devils in the abyss because of the blood war. Yay? |

Well, if anything your Good demon being mechanically Chaotic Evil is probably closer mechanically to what he should be... so there's that. |

What you're describing is not odd. I like it a well, but I like that as an NPC. An event. An awesome thing that happened I don't like it as "Seeing three of these every day". it's no longer special at that point. I love weird and completely ridiculous characters...I just don't think they're appropriate as PCs that people will run into constantly. |

I don't ever get tired of seeing those types of characters. And if anything, the straight lace characters, in my opinion, make the best npcs, not the weird ones. PC's should always be the weird ones, that way I have a chance to interact with them more often. |
