I was reading the requirements and it says that you must be humanoid to become a lich. Is this exactly how it works from 3.5? as in do they have to have the humanoid type. So for example the aasimar could not become a lich as they have the outsider (native) type? Thank you for your answers ahead of time.

I'm faaairly sure that you can make an Aasimar lich here. Most low ECL adjustment races that are fairly human-like should have a good chance. If our Gith can't become liches currently (we've listed them as native outsiders), there might be a lore cause to change that as well.

The rule is indeed referring to the humanoid type, though. Should not be able to make an outsider lich (Tanar'ri+Lich, Aasimon+Lich and so on) or a Blink Dog Lich. Woof.
Feel free to prod me with questions and other things!

HUmanoid falls into various categories. I know Goblinoids fall into it, I wouldn't be suprised if Gith did as well, and I'm rather certain Aasimar, Tieflings and other planetouched do as well.

lol @ worg liches :P
But yes, most of the template classes are designed to work for planetouched, humanoid, and even some of the reptilian races. I'll try to fart around and see if I can come up with a precise list of what races can take which template prcs to limit any confusion. Some people saw humanoid and thought anything that LOOKS humanoid. Unfortunately not the same thing :P

If it truly follows the humanoid type, and assuming all races are correctly assigned their types. Then i should be able to work out what can and can't be used with my dnd 3.5 knowledge. Although I would still be interested in that compiled list of races that could achieve lichdom.

And now that I'm on the thinking process of it, Dragons are capable of achieving lichdom and are simply referred to as dracolichs. To become a lich you essentially store your soul in an object, thus becoming "immortal". Outsiders would have no chance to do such a thing as their souls and bodies are single entity so they cannot achieve lichdom. Thus from my point of view at least, any race should be able to become a lich so long as they have a soul to store away for "safe keeping". Or is my understanding of lichdom incorrect? I know not of the other rituals, for achieving lichdom, besides the storing of the soul.

For some reason Obsidian decided to make tiefers, aasimars, and genasi "planetouched" rather than "native outsiders".

We do, however, have a "native outsider" category which contains githyanki and githzerai.

The racial types that can take undead template classes are Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Halfling, Half-elf, Half-orc, Human, Goblinoid, Monstrous, Orc, Reptilian, Planetouched, Yuan-ti, Native Outsider, and Humanoid (other). Oh, and Undead can take them too (e.g., awakened skeletons).

Aren't the Githyanki ruled by a 'lich queen'?
- Junathoraxus: Bronze dragon born of the celestial mountain, feylord of brux.

- Xxaaxacat: Minion seeking beholder, namer of the fated.

- Rano: Mercenary minotaur cager.

- Alistar Lac-du-vardal: Ancient vampire, cursed former servant of Anubis.

And she would seek out and immediately kill any other Githyanki who sought lichdom. So maybe I allow it and then someone more powerful than Elminster shows up and turns you into hash browns?
