Greetings everyone,

First, thanks for creating such an interesting server. I have yet to get IG but it seems fantastic in it's RP possibilities. I've only ever played on BGTSCC so this server is like a brand new (fantastically wild) adventure!

After some perusing of the wiki and brainstorming, the character concept I want to create is a "Planar Traveler/Cosmic Roamer". Everyone here probably has the same idea lol but hear me out! I'd like him to be a Sun Elf and find the Psion class extremely appealing as I've never played one before but always wanted to. I am thinking maybe Psychoporter/Gatecrasher as classes as it fits the theme. But after reading the forums, psychoporter seems to be the most frowned upon discipline.

For those with a better knowledge than me, how has game play been for a Psychoporter? Is it really the worst discipline to focus in? I like the combo of classes i mentioned above but if anyone has any recommendations for improvements, im all ears. Not looking for a PC that can roll the planes, just one that survives decently enough and not be a hindrance on others.

Any help?
-K

Hi there,

Psychoportation probably has the weakest starting powers (your first two level 1 powers are automatically chosen by discipline) currently, something I may get around to tweaking in the near future. This is probably where most of the complaints come from.

On the flip-side, Nomads get Psionic Wormhole as an exclusive power (think Dimension Door, but one that the whole party can walk through if they so choose). If that doesn't seem like enough to justify losing out on Astral Constructs or other starting powers, you can always choose a Discipline that better fits your projected combat style and just take a lot of psychoportation powers (ala dismissal, banishment, dimension door, baleful teleportation, etc) for flavor, as psionic Disciplines don't have 'forbidden powers' like arcane schools do... you just won't be able to get the discipline-specific powers at level 1 and 9.

Some thoughts....

First cross classing a Psion in table top is quite hard, but it's much harder on this server. Currently no feats to raise augment level over your manifester level, and practiced manifester feat hasn't been implemented. So that limits the augmentation level of your power to your Psion class levels.

Taking Gatecrasher (I think it's 5 levels?) would then limit you to 25 levels on a ECL 0 race and less on an +3 ECL race, but not counting the race class levels. So it's a trade off for power vs roleplay.

Many ppl think seer is the best discipline currently because they have a level 1 immunity to blind/deafen, but also psionic true sight is restricted at level 5 to seer.

There are other teleporting powers too. Dimension door, baleful teleport, transfer. On the other hand Psychoporter gets wormhole, which if you check the srd for pnp comparison is most similar to a 9th level power called circle teleport. So it's not too bad.

Would be really amazing if you could find a way to change how that works. =)

Well, it's doable. But you will be weak to start out. If you're fine with that, cool. If not, I suggest another build idea.

Now, before even get IG & start making your level 1 character, I'd like to quote something from Things You May Want To Know As A New Player To Sigil:
Quote:

Always have a rebuild plan. Purchase a stone golem, bracers of unholy blessing, or a staff of frost for the summons (if you are going to have wizard/sorc levels,) or a flame shard longsword (they tend to be a little cheaper, because fire damage is pretty bad once you get up in levels.) Having a reliable source of high damage (even if it's from a source that wouldn't work in the late game) and an AC in the 30's makes the first 15 levels go by very quickly on a rebuild, even solo. With the golem, staff, or the bracers, you can go straight to wererats.

Now, why do I quote that? Well, because I'm on my 5th rebuild at this point. Feats are not plentiful for casters (not a discouragement, just a consideration imho), and sometimes your original idea doesn't work in the way you thought it would. In that vein: Info On Releveling.

Great info, thank you all!

So without Practiced Manifester, pure Psion would be the way to go to avoid dispels? Is the dispel bug fixed here?

I do enjoy tankier builds with a bit of arcane/eldritch/or possibly psionic. Perhaps psion isn't the way to go. I completely suck when it comes to caster classes lol my main on the other server was a STR Bard.

Back to the drawing board I suppose!

I may take the advice on maybe leveling a stronger build in the beginning to learn the initial server mechanics. Another player advised me to do that as well.

Can anyone recommend the more successful PvE builds here? Not so much PvP as that really isn't my thing.

In my experience, the easiest way to explore the server is with an archery ranger. Easy to build, not super gear dependent, and generally good at not being murdered. Use silver throwing axes in Undersigil and cold-iron throwing axes in Brux. Take Craft Weapon and make your own arrows for later. Any +5 enhance/+ whatever mighty bow will suffice for endgame as long as you're rocking holy gloves. Being able to see what's coming and run away in stealth mode is damn useful.

For the traveller aspect may go 16bard 9 psion (nomad) 5 gatecrasher. Think of lots aways to rp that too. Use psion powers for some buffs and teleport. Bard has access to nice defensive spells and diminsion door.+ skills youll need fore Gatecrasher.

I think someone was working on dispels mhm.

Tankiest psion is a crystal dragon psion, but it also reduces some effective manifesting levels. The arcane dragon racial class is also very tanky but it can be coupled with eldritch knight. so a sorcerer dragon is quite tough.

You could also limit Psion powers to just a few things you want and ignore playing the class for the power, then get the strength from other classes.

Well, Psychoporter is definitely NOT the discipline for this.

For the feel of a Gish psion, maybe look into Egoist on the psion side of things. I also recommend getting ahold of someone like Lucadia, who as several pisons. Powers like Inertial Armour, Biofeedback, Force Screen, Concealing Amorpha, Greater Concealing Amorpha, Mental Barrier, Hustle, Energy Adaption, Emphatic Feedback, Oak Body, Reddopsi, Psionic Iron Body, Shadow Body, & Cheat Fate will all increase survivability. That said, I don't really know the specifics, because I am not a psion player. I don't know if grabbing all (or most) of these powers is actually viable.

I'm going to make the same suggestion I always make.

Make your first character a "normal" build. Yes, the crazy races and custom classes are all cool and unique, but they're going to have a steep learning curve, particularly if you've played the game for some time. But also realize that you're only stuck in that normal build until you're ready for a challenge.

So go with a nice standard build that you know how to be strong with. Learn your way around the server, make some new friends, figure out how the systems work and the best way to survive adventure areas. Earn some coin and buy some decent gear.

Then go back and rebuild as your character's dream build. Your mage decides that psionic magic is a more worthy pursuit than arcana, etc. But now at L1 you're carrying around the gear of a 10th-level (or wherever you stopped) character, and getting substantial XP bonuses that make leveling a lot easier.

We ran to the sounds of the thunder.
We danced among the lightning bolts,
and tore the world asunder.
