So I think I got my summoner down... ish. (After this no more characters for. . . a week at least! ;-p I'm shooting for a witchy/voodoo/witch doctor vibe hit you in the face with spear and spirit/undead peeps. I want it to be an Oni cause I think they're cool and I've never played a giant toon before. So... Initial brainstorming came up with 5 OM/3 BG/10 PM/9 Sorc Which seemed effective. I'd get special summons through necromantic might, sorc buffs and EDM, and a beefed up undead BFF. Maybe have a hired demon hanging around when I want to look like I've got big mojo. (Unsummon before they embarrass me in front of the friends.) Then I realized that a pure Oni cleric could do all that with an animal companion hell hound and undead minions and would probably be way more survivable, dealing better damage and having way better CL. (WTF Cleric?) The thing is I'm playing on a laptop with a touch pad. Never been really good at the whole, point and blast thing. So easier, buff em and hit toons work well for me. Thoughts? Anything from the first combo I don't know that may make it sexier? Any other suggestions? |

Pick the build that most screams voodoo witch doctor to you. It's not worth compromising your character concept for a few extra stats. |

I'd go with 12 sorc 10 golemaster 1 Palemaster 5 Ogre Mage. this gives you 20 base CL before Practice so full casting selection, a Maxed out Bone Golem, and Necromantic Might summons after you take that one palemaster level. Don't worry about hitting things as a sorc with a extend Metamaic and Persistant, you'll be able to just buff the Golem, and summon a Death Tyrant and walk around maps invisable while they wreck Havoc. |

My only question is this, does Ogre cleric feel witch doctor-y to you? It's not about CL or squeezing out more stat points. It's about RP'ing the concept. Ultimately, it's your character, and you need to decide on a build that you feel fits your concept. |

It's been said before elsewhere but most ECL races tend to be poor spellcasters, just because it feels so long to progress. There was another Ogre Mage build thread not so long ago and you could consider some kind of Sorc 2 /OM 5 /Cler 10 /Theurge 10 build, but they're aways going to suffer a little bit because of ECL. |

Oni are +3, so they don't have it as bad as some. You could even attempt this with a Beholder (+5 ECL), but it'd suck major balls. A little bit of suffering isn't so bad, frankly. |

Unfortunately Spirit Shaman summons haven't been hit with the rework stick yet, since they're your prototypical witch doctors. Might be something I look into during the Hiatus before Phase II. |

Ok, great advice. Normally I shoot for the RP, I'm just scared my character will be less than a paperweight by the time I'm done with it. Sitting with the concept I don't think any of those class combos would work for me. Instead I came up with the idea of W/C/MT/Vampire, very tall human haha. The vampire will be a cheap man's lichdom which I think works with a witchdoctor, he made a deal with a vamp just as easily as he does demons, spirits or devils. It makes him near immortal and gives me access to the beefed up undead. Now the question is: At what point does low Caster Level make a class's spells useless? I have two routes I can go here W 6/C 1/MT 10/Vampire 10 which gives me 16 lvls of Warlock casting and 19 levels of cleric casting. Or W 1/ C 6/MT 10/Vamp 10 I'm going for all the warlock flavor spells, dark whispers, dark one's own luck, Baneful Geas, Baneful Polymorph, either bat or demon shifting. Endless undead casting. I just don't know if things like Baneful Polymorph will ever work with a caster level of 16 later on? If it doesn't I may just want to shift more levels into cleric so I have a more functional class and use Warlock for the buffs and a few useless flavonoids that I can cast on some low level enemies and chars. Thoughts? |
