So I have built my summoner! Frank. He's a Cleric Golem Master and while he's got his hoards of undead, his currently pathetic longbow golem and his pig, he's awfully squishy. I'm partially ok with that because I mainly want him to be in a support roll, eventually shooting off a gun and standing behind the lines. Problem is right now he's just getting wiped out. AC is definitely a problem. Sherys helped fix him up a bit with some natural armor, but I need to figure out what to do about his AC. His build demands six feats right now, so he's got a lot open. When I reroll what feats would be best for AC? And what other ways can I be boosting his AC? I'm used to a server where his 37 AC would have been godly. Also, does the monkey grip bug allow you to double wield pistols? And would that be frowned upon? |

Hello. I play a Golem Master that caps out at 39 AC. Something I had to learn was that I basically just had to give up entirely on the idea of actually attacking anything with my character and focusing solely on supporting my Construct and other players through heals (it's been a while since I counted but last I checked I had something like 200 Healer's Kits in my inventory) and buffs. Staying hidden via Etherealness and Invisibility is sadly something you're going to have to live with unless you plan on going the HIPS route which with your presumably already limited Skill Ranks and Class Levels may or may not be something you want to do. Well, at least, that's been my End-Game with a Max HD Valorhammer for a while. I don't really have any advice for levelling other than to just group with other people, play support, and keep your wands of Invisibility close. |

Pretty much what Sin said. I've only had good luck with two offensive types of golem master - a beholder, who gets lovely offensive abilities independent of class levels...and my cleric/MT/Wizard/GM, who has wizarding primarily to use the Staves of Power (air, earth, magi, etc.) I use the staves for my offense, throwing around chain lightnings, orbs, cones of cold, summoning orglashs, magic missiles, etc. You need a pretty reasonable strength to do it, as you need to have a bunch of staves in your inventory, but I find the experience to be very fun - having half a dozen staves to switch between keeps you on your toes in terms of knowledge, but gives you lots of options. Granted, your personal damage will be paltry compared to an offensive (insert any class here), but that's what your golem and undead are for. Also, this doesn't really work in the grand abyss, as everything has saves that are just too high. You have to stick with the non-save, non-SR spells on the staves...which is pretty much just the orbs. As for AC... 10 + 3 (boots) + 8 (plate) + 1 (dex) + 4 (armor ench) + 1 (dex) + 4 (nat) + 2 (shield) + 4 (shield ench) + 4 (deflection) = 41 with conservative gear, with the option of ICE...if your heart is set on a gun, it's going to be pretty hard to get much higher than 40 on a cleric without a shield unless you have some racial AC trick going, which probably isn't the case if you're going GM as you want to max out those skill ranks by avoiding an ECL race. Wands of Invis, Mirror Image, Displacement, and Stoneskin might be about your only options...maybe False Life and Vampiric Touch if you're really desperate. |

Golem Masters are a class that takes a lot of work to really see the good golems. If you're willing to do the work to get great golems, it's worth it. If not, I'd pick another class. |

Eh, I'm willing. I find that he's getting played more than any of my other characters because he has a goal. Most of the other builds are flavor builds with no goal. I build them, they RP a bit and feel finished. Frank won't feel finished till he has each and every planar golem in all possible colored selections. Also thank you guys for the advice! |

You can't double wield any ranged weapons as it's hard coded into the engine. Depending on the time you can sometimes find merchants selling +5 items for relatively cheap. If you need more ac then there is divine shield, heavy armor optimization feats, armor skin, and also improved expertise. =) |

Frank Base Race: Human Starting stats STR: 8 DEX: 13 CON: 13 INT: 14 WIS: 18 CHA: 8 You want your alignment to be some kind of Lawful, (LE, LN, LG, w/e) so that you can take monk. Class name indicates time to change to that class, continue to take that class until otherwise specified. You want to make sure your tumble is at least 30 by the time you're 27, you don't need to take anymore past that. After that, max out heal, and all three craft skills. (Note, your base skill in alchemy, armor, and weapon crafting is what determines your golem HD, any boosts from feats or items will make no difference.) You want 4 base spellcraft for Practiced Spellcaster You can easily get enough UMD with able learner to use wands, you'll want to do that. This build can easily get 60 AC with full +5 gear, an IMA wand, a shield wand, and persisted haste. You can also give your summons and golem persisted haste, prayer, and vigor, as well as deflection AC, natural AC and armor AC with wands. You just want to max out your wisdom essentially, it'll give you a large selection of spells and you'll have 27 CL with the 4 from golem master and 4 from practiced caster added onto the 19 from cleric. 1 Cleric - (Plant domain [Barkskin for summons] Time [Persisted Haste for summons] ) Corpse Crafter, Able Learner 2 3 Extend Spell 4 WIS 5 Monk 6 Cleric - Combat Expertise 7 8 WIS 9 Craft Construct 10 Golem Master 11 12 Practiced Spellcasting WIS 13 14 15 Improved Combat Expertise 16 WIS 17 18 Persistent Spell 19 20 Cleric WIS 21 Great Wisdom 22 23 Great Wisdom 24 WIS 25 Great Wisdom 26 27 Great Wisdom 28 WIS 29 Armor Skin 30 |

Thanks Penguin Ninja for going into this, but I don't think it quite fits. In the end I want him to be a summoner, so I need to keep the Animal Domain, and in order for the Pig to be any good to me I need to keep my cleric levels up. I think with some feats I can get my AC high enough not to simply lay down and die. That's good enough for me. I've got another character coming up with a monk dip, it suites his RP style a lot more. I don't think Frank has that kind of discipline. I really do apreciate you running the numbers though! |

The pig is never going to be any good. (The default animal domain summons were crappy even in the base game.) The golems, the undead, and the other high level summons are your bread and butter. If you want the pig for RP, that's fine. But don't count on the pig doing much. |

All right, it's up to you. But just so you know, the Animal domain is fairly worthless, in general. You get cats grace, but other than that, not much |

Yeah, I was originally trying to go for the improved animal companion feat, but it never came up as an option for him as a cleric. So he kept running around with he pig, and now he's known for the pig so it's a big part of his RP. Maybe some day the Pig will get eaten, but I don't think it'll be anytime soon. The main idea right now since I built myself a stone and nimblewight golem is to reroll, make him a bit more survivable with the pig and golems still in toe. Then when I get all ten levels of golem master an max skill build a mithril and some planar golems then potential delevel and take 27 levels cleric/3 golem master which lets me build tradeable golems, but also gets me full progresion for my animal companion and very competent command dead skills. If the golems die, it's just another deleveling and releveling to make a new one. Keeps the character goal oriented which I'm enjoying. |
