I guess my point was too poorly expressed. Until earlier today, there was a sticky. Right at the top of the page, next to the link for the Wiki and IRC. Then the disagreement between NZ and the staff took place, and they took the link down. The current link provided by Mr. O, while a nice gesture, was made despite the staff because, as NZ explained, the staff has pulled out of the Discord.

So, my point is this: The new rule was backed with the addendum that the Discord provided a venue for the OOC interaction that would no longer be taking place in the OOC Room. But now SCoD no longer has an endorsed Discord (the staff has pulled out and the link has been taken down.)

So, I for one, would like to see the staff respond to justifying their rule with a detour that they've turned their backs on.

It was taken off the top bar because it is no longer officially endorsed, as the owner of the Discord is not staff and has moderation rules that differ from the rules that staff would like.

**That's it. This doesn't change anything but the fact that it's being made clear, "Hey, staff doesn't moderate the Discord."

It's still for OOC Sigil discussion, and Mr_O provided a link to it for just that reason.

Not super complicated. : x

**Edited for clarity.

Do people really need to be made "clear" that opinions expressed are the opinions of whoever posted them? Since the staff "owns" the forum, does that make every opinion posted on the forum the staff's?

....I find it pretty amazing that we now have six pages of vicious debate , accusations of power abuse (in a free multiplayer sever? ), discussions on "rights" (again, over a video games), a crapton of finger pointing... over a simple "please stop clogging up the OOC room with performance killing spells and out of place chatter in the very first room anyone logs into" .

We have a ton of player houses, cafe's, RP zones, out of game chat rooms, forums, and really any number of ways to keep in touch oocly.... why is any of this such a problem that we need to all get acidic over?
I just want to kill monsters and get prizes for it. Is that REALLY so much to ask for?

Right. That was poorly phrased. I meant in terms of the stuff being babbled about there being moderated by staff.

This is pretty much the sum of it, We encourage ooc communication and community building. However we need it to be clear that it is run by players not staff and so we cannot be in charge of what happens there, Nor are we to be approached there for server matters. Depending on the results of the on going poll in discord a link to discord will be returned to the header or placed in a sticky topic with a clear disclaimer. If it is to be player or staff run has been left up to you the players.

To the OOC room, Such was an almost unanimous decision by the staff. Because the staff received all the complaints and such that has stemmed from our previous lax ruling over the years. I have seen many people minimizing this, But ultimately you are not the one who receives them day in and day out. We did not make the rule for our own pleasure, It was done because it is currently a necessity. The ruling might be removed in the future when and if we devise an alternative mechanical solution. This is not a mistrust of the population or a power trip, It is a matter that simply has had to be addressed, For the enjoyment of the majority. The fact that we very rarely add new rules and have so very few, is a clear testament to the trust we place in you all to be mature.

As i said in discord we are open to alternative suggestions and comments from players, A few people have PMed me with such and their words have played a part in our current discussion. The same can be said for this topic, But only if suggestions are offered in a mature way.
Do not hesitate to send me a PM if you:
- Require assistance with a staff or player conflict
- Would like to join the testing team
- Waiting on a staff ruling for longer then a week
- Want to join or start an event for the Harmonium, Transcendent Order, or Free League

At least this time around communication has been handled in a more mature and respecful way toward the playerbase. That is already a sign of improvement.

P.S.
I had written a few more considerations earlier, but after reading the poll on Discord most of them were not valid anymore so I removed them.
PnP, Pencil-and-paper: the term refers to the ancient tools that were available to early roleplaying humankind. The pencil was a long piece of wood that contained a soft, staining, carbon-based material called graphite encased inside. Early roleplaying humans would scrape the pencil across the surface of paper. Paper was the term used to describe an early form of random access memory, consisting of pressed tree pulp that was smooth and designed to easily absorb the scrapings of pencil graphite.

I don't feel strongly about this either way, but I'm also a bit (*but not too) surprised at the polarized reactions and I think it's because there's some worry about what will happen if someone actually does decide to loiter in the OOC room and a DM happens along by. :whip: :whip: :whip:

Most likely you'll be gently nudged to get back in game.

Just noting that since this rule was enacted I've started to see a down trend on total players connected. I seen it go down to 10-12 during my prime play hours where normally we're always 30+. Also, at one point Rexxer and I were the only ones even on at all.

That's not necessarily related... I rarely saw more than 2-3 people in the OOC room apart from when the server resets.

And in terror they run and hide,
From the shadows of old we rise,
Awakened, from the dark!

Over the ancient ruins we fly,
Where the old kings go to die,
And the new kingdoms rising high,
Awakened, from the dark, dark slumber!"

It's more of a suggestion, not really a rule from what I can see. It's not even listed in the server rules. Majority of bad opinions have been made by painting fear scenarios, which haven't really come to pass. Now you could make an argument about player numbers attracting player numbers portion, and I do think there's part of that. And likely partly Tides of Numenera release and other minor things that chew on the numbers here there.

The more likely reason for low population is simply exhaustion. We have had high numbers for a long time and people have been pushing themselves to log in even if their characters may not really have anything to do, so they've logged in and hung around OOC room, and then we get to this topic. The "ruling" I think has been trying to solve the wrong problem, problem which I believe to be inspiration, or lack of it rather. The reason people linger around OOC room isn't because they really wanted to log in to hang around OOC room, it's a place where people linger pending whether or not the stars are aligned for assured roleplay fun. And if they aren't, well why try to force getting into RP that won't prove fruitful.

Naturally the issue of that is that there's no easy solution to it, no easy person to point fingers at to fix it. I could make some kind of motivational speech, but I've in the past noticed that the results tend to really be quite varied, but seldom super effective. If it's exhaustion driven and lack of inspiration to really put character(s) into a position that'd require effort to maintain, then the most efficient way to get through that is to actually try to get inspiration elsewhere. Movies, books, other games, series... finding ways for character growth/personal plots since stagnation of characters is the surefire way to have little to do. I have made a topic about it in the past: HERE
