Little Morsels of Poker Goodness BY: Derrick Oliver www.highrollerradioshow.com Alright High Rollers...some odds and ends for you...tidbits if you will...and you know, you gotta love poker tidbits! By the way, if you've got a story to tell, pass it along...let it be told on High Roller Radio. You can reach us at highrollerradio@hotmail.com. You're gonna love these stories, courtesy AskMen.com. Tricky Dick Here's one about tricky Dick'and his poker career. Former US President Richard Nixon and poker go way back...he reportedly financed his very first political campaign with money won playing cards during World War II...yes, he was a proud member of the US Navy. That bankroll was used to pay for his Congressional run in 1946...and it proved successful. This game we love is well ingrained in American history, from Mark Twain, to Barack Obama to Richard Nixon, who by the way, decided in the end that his lucrative pastime would not sit well with some of his cohorts...especially as his political career sky rocketed...and he gave it up. Quit poker in 1952...when he said yes to Dwight and became Mr. Eisenhower's running mate. Here's a fact jack...in Nixon's autobiography...he wrote, "I learned that the people who have the cards are usually the ones who talk the least and the softest; those who are bluffing tend to talk loudly and give themselves away." Richard Nixon, Presidential High Roller! The legend of Poker Alice You didn't want to play poker against Poker Alice...let's face it, you earn a nickname like "Poker" Alice it would suggest she got it because you can play the game. She is one of the most memorable wild women of the old west. Poker Alice...she moved to Colorado from England in the 1860's and eventually married a mining engineer...a guy who like to dabble in the game at local gambling parlors. Well, old Alice went along for the ride, but not just to watch the 'old man', No, she actually paid attention, learned the games, and then began playing for a living after the hubby died. So, how'd she get the nickname...well, by cleaning up, regularly. She also earned quite a reputation...and by the end of the gold rush, Alice had made over $5,000...an incredible amount for those day...she moved to New York and retired. In her lifetime, the wild woman shot two men, killing one, and eventually opened an establishment which was, get this, a combination of a card room and a brothel. Interestingly, despite her wild ways, Alice refused to play or deal cards on Sunday, and chose to teach Sunday school lessons to her fellow ladies. The Origin of "The Nuts" As you know, in poker, "the nuts" refers to an unbeatable poker hand. The best hand possible is the stone cold nuts. You have the nuts...you cannot be beat. According to some poker experts, the term originated in the old west, where players often bet their horse and wagon. Can you see the ego's in the those days...the guns too...but being macho...I can see it...someone, in the saloon, everyone watching, stand-up abnd say, 'I bet the horse and wagon, I bet it all." When a player put up his horse and wagon in a game, he would be required to remove the nuts from his wagon wheels and place them in the pot...why? So he wouldn't flee if he lost...or at least if he did, it would be by foot. Therefore, it was assumed that anyone would bet "the nuts" with only with the best possible poker hand. Cool fact for ya...a "nut" player is one who tends to play only strong hands. A "calling station" is someone who frequently checks and calls, but rarely raises. You'd rather be the nut than the calling station...we're going nuts, right here on High Roller Radio. Canada Bill Love the name, Canada Bill...but it turns out he may just be history's greatest con man! A gambler and con man, William "Canada Bill" Jones played along the Mississippi River in the mid-1800s. Supposedly, had a squeaking voice, seemed to be somewhat of a klutz and came across as a bit of a clueless simpleton. Yeah right. Nothing was further from the truth. Canada Bill was a poker cheat and three-card monte specialist...love that game by the way, first came across it on the streets of Chicago at the age of 15...a busker show me the technique and man did I practice...pretty good at it now...anyway, Canada Bill is a hustler of legendary status... A guy who regularly fleeced unsuspecting opponents...sucker's who had him pegged as a sucker. What goes around comes around though...and old Bill's gambling winnings were routinely lost in rigged games operated by other con men and he eventually died penniless. A friend once tried to warn him to stay away from a particular game he knew to be crooked... Canada Bill responded, like a true gambler would, "I know, but it's the only game in town." Perhaps his best-known quote has become a mantra for many poker players: "Suckers have no business with money, anyway." Canada Bill on High Roller Radio. The "Brunson" It's gotta be the most famous hand in poker, period. 10 2. Ten deuce..."the Brunson". Yes, Doyle Brunson, the Godfather of Poker, the author of the game's Bible, Super System 1 and 2...captured the World Series of Poker in 1976 and 1977...back-to-back baby! Both times, on the final hand of the tournament, the Hall of Famer, Brunson, was holding 10 2. The exact same hole cards, ten deuce. Oh, how many players today continue losing money just to day they played "the Brunson". In poker, "rags" refers to holdings that are of low denomination or ones that have a low chance of winning... Rags like ten deuce for instance...but every once in a while, sometimes, rags like that...can win you a World Championship...they did for Doyle...twice! From rags to riches on High Roller Radio. Misquoting the Quote Master It's a famous poker misquote...Amarillo "Slim" Preston...legend..is often quoted as saying that if a woman ever won the World Series of Poker, he would slit his own throat. Got him in trouble too...but did he say it? Like many quotes that get people in hot water...it was taken way out of context. Playing in a tournament, Slim watched a rather annoying woman declare to the media in a loud and arrogant fashion that she was going to win the event. When she asked Slim what he thought of that...he said that if 'she' won he would slit his throat. Thankfully for Slim, she didn't. Cool Fact: Amarillo "Slim" Preston, who helped establish gaming facilities around the world, was kidnapped by associates of drug lord Pablo Escobar in Colombia because they believed he was a spy or informant. He was eventually released. He also appeared on the Johnny Carson show...the first ever bid to take the game from smoky, underground rooms, to the mainstream. The Fixer Arnold Rothstein was an American gambler and underworld figure...who was rumored to be the mastermind behind the fixing of the 1919 World Series...you know, the Chicago Blacksox...made a movie about it called "Eight Men Out"...the entire team, save for Shoeless Joe Jackson who carried a .358 average with a few homers and stellar defence. Did you know, Rothstein was murdered in a hotel room in New York while playing poker...gunned down supposedly for welching on a large bet he lost at the table. By the way, a fact...Rothstein allegedly paid a number of players from the Chicago White Sox $80,000 to throw the Series. 80g's...and the Fixer, who got 'Fixed' on High Roller Radio.
