With the rising popularity in the game of poker, players are often craving to learn new types of poker games. In the past several years Texas Hold'em has taken over the majority of the world of poker. However, it's not the only type of poker out there. This article will be talking about one of the most popular home poker games before the rise of Texas Hold'em, Five Card Draw.

In the poker world, there are two major types of poker games, draw games and stud games. If you are a Texas Hold'em player, you are already quite familiar with playing stud games. Stud games are poker games in which players create hands using a combination of face up and face down cards. In Texas Hold'em, all players get to use the community cards on the board, the face up cards, and each player gets to use his two hole cards, his face down cards. In contrast, a draw game of poker is a game of poker where players make hands only from the face down cards, the cards they are holding in their hand. The most common and one of the oldest types of draw poker is Five Card Draw. This article discusses the basic strategy of learning Five Card Draw from a Texas Hold'em players point of view. If you are unfamiliar with the basic rules of Five Card Draw, please research them first before reading this article.

Strategy and Psychology

Five Card Draw is, in simple terms, a game of strategy and psychology. In Texas Hold'em, players often view the community cards on the board to help determine what other players might be holding. However, in Five Card Draw there is no help from community cards. Each opponent has their own 5 cards in their hand and could be holding any combination of cards. Because of these facts, Five Card Draw is a complex game of poker psychology and strategy. Being able to read your opponents and pick up on their tells and betting patterns is extremely important in Five Card Draw.

Truly the only three tools a poker player can use and observe in Five Card Draw in determining how strong their hand is, are: observing the draw, observing the tells, and observing the betting.

Observing the Betting

If you're an experienced Texas Hold'em player, you should be used to observing the betting. Carefully watch how all players bet at the table. Not only watch how they bet, but carefully pay attention to the hands they turn over during the showdown. You might learn that Player 2 always brings in for a raise if he starts with a JJ, four to a flush, or any straight draw. Observing and learning the betting patterns of your opponents is a key step to becoming a winning Five Card Draw player.

Observing the Draw

Observing the draw will be a new skill for Texas Hold'em players. In Texas Hold'em, there is no draw, so there is nothing to observe. However, in Five Card Draw, learning to observe the draw is extremely crucial. When your opponents draw cards, carefully pay attention to how many cards each player is drawing and which player is betting what. If a player stands pat (doesn't draw) and continues to bet his hand, he's probably fairly strong. Often you'll catch players drawing only one card, most likely trying to make a straight or a flush. If a player checks and calls before the draw, draws one card, then bets and raises after the draw, he quite possibly made his hand. Learning to read other players by observing the draw is a skill that requires patience and time to learn but is extremely important in all draw games of poker.

Observing the Tells

The final major tool you will use in Five Card Draw, or any form of draw poker, is learning to read other players tells. This is a key to any poker game, not just Five Card Draw. Texas Hold'em players have probably learned about reading tells before and the same concepts apply in Five Card Draw. Watch your opponents and try to pick up on subtle context clues in their actions to help determine what type of hand they might be playing.

While it's often hard to find a Five Card Draw game in brick and mortar casinos, you will often find other types of draw poker. If you're simply interested in practicing Five Card Draw only, check out online cardrooms or home poker games. There are several books on the market for information on reading tells and poker psychology that will help continue your expertise in Five Card Draw and general poker and I highly recommend reading them.
