High Roller Radio Blog By: Derrick Oliver Hey High Rollers, Time for a blog entry. Today...Titatnic Thompson in an "All-In Moment" His name was Alvin Clarence Thomas. A gambler and hustler. Golfer, card player, marksman & pool shark, his skills and reputation were compared to Merlin himself. And he was involved in a high-stakes poker game that led to what was then called, ‘the Crime of the Century’ Titanic Thompson in an All-In Moment! Titanic Thompson travelled the USA wagering at cards, dice games, golf, even horseshoes! He’d make enormous prop bets, ones he’d devise, a roving gambler back in the day gamblers had to carry a gun, perhaps two. It’s believed old Titanic killed 5 men in his life, 4 of them shot in self-defence when they tried to rob him of his winnings one night. But it was a poker game…in the wee hours on November 4th 1928…that gave old Titanic some real notoriety. Crime boss Arnold Rothstein lost 500,000, but welched on the payment because he believed the game was fixed…and it was…by Titanic and one Nate Raymond. Rothstein was murdered. A crime boss shot! Back then it was the Crime of the Century. Now Titanic wasn’t present at the shooting…but he did testify at the trial. The accused – a George Mcmanus was acquitted! Real quick about the nickname…after taking 500 bucks off a rival in a pool game one night…a spectator…asked, ”what’s his name?” The opponent replied, “it must be Titanic…he sinks everybody.” Want to listen to more All-In Monents?
