Talk about history! The El Cortez in Vegas has it in spades. Now it wants the United States government to declare it just that – a ‘historic place’. Consider this…it was once owned by Benjamin Siegal, Bugsy Siegal. When you think Vegas gambling halls today, most will mention the Bellagio, Ceasars Palace, the Wynn perhaps? maybe Mandalay Bay? The El Cortez let’s just say, is not the first one to come to mind. Just off the strip, on Freemont Street…lies the El Cortez…wants the National Park Service, to distinguish it Historic…and it no doubt is. Opened in the 1940’s…a hang-out for thieves thugs and criminals…Bugsy Siegal is among one of its owners. We’re talkin 70 years ago, this place opened its doors…aesthetically, hasn’t changed much either. Siegel sold the El Cortez in 1946…a year later he took some lead in the head…a bullet folks…bye bye Bugsy. The property was later largely controlled by William Israel Alderman, known as “Ice Pick Willie” for his habit of lodging one into a guy’s ear during an argument….Other criminals who ran the carpet joint through the years include “ruthless dwarf” Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum, both associates of mob boss Meyer Lanksy. Las Vegas old school…the last king left in the old Vegas deck…The El Cortez folks…some history for ya…on High Roller Radio.
