Demons and Spirits

Demons and Spirits originate and have basis in many religions including Christianity. Yet they are not as prevalent or commonly accepted in Christianity as compared to Angels. In fact many branches of Christianity do not recognize or acknowledge their existence at all.

Generally a demon or spirit is only called upon for a short time - usually only long enough to perform a specific task or action that is required of him or her. After that task is completed, the demon or Spirit is again banished until such a time as its help is needed once again.

However, this is not always the case, but it is considered the general rule. Mostly they do not have a material basis, but are purely spiritual in their existence and appearance. There is an exception though, this is when they are used in talismans or protective wards on a house. Demons and spirits can be called in solo, or in a group context with equal efficiency.

Sometimes a Demon may actually be a God, but this is not typically seen when associated with Christianity. This is a different type of demon, and perhaps they should be referred to as Demon-Princes. The difference between a Demon and a Demon-Prince is like the difference between a Guardian Angel and an Arch-Angel. Arch-Angels and Demon-Princes are more like Gods, in that they are usually well known and have their names publicized in books, as well as having relatively clearly defined specialties/spheres of influence.

Elementals

Again, you will see reference to elementals in various religions, including Christianity, but they are not of great importance, and not broadly recognized by all branches of Christianity. In most instances they are not even acknowledged. These are a special type of Spirit/Demon having a special association with one of the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air.

Earth elementals can be, among other things, Gnomes, Dwarves, Moles, Rocks, Stones or Trolls. They have a close association with and connection to the earth, which is what gives them their power, and in turn what they use to assist when called upon for aid.

Water elementals can be Undines, Mermaids, Fish, Serpents, Frogs, Rivers, Lakes, Oceans, Water Nymphs or Whirlpools.

Air elementals can be Sylphs, Fairies, Owls, Eagles, the Wind, Smoke, Incense or Tornadoes.

Fire elementals can be Salamanders, bonfires, lanterns, candles, torches, fireworks.

Because each of the elementals draws its power from its specific source, it is not uncommon to find references where thy have been used in groups. They are not always used in solo work.

You often see reference to them in various Pagan beliefs and practices, much more so than anywhere else.

Another interesting point is the role the elementals play in the magician's magickal tools. These tools are a special type of elemental. Wands are fire elementals, Swords and Knives are air elementals, Cups are water elementals and Pentacles are earth elementals.

Discussions suggest that these magickal tools are often thought of as a sort of cross breed between an elemental, a familiar, and a talisman type of servitor.
