Can you hear what I hear in the back of your mind
As you stand on the stage when they tell you it's time
To read words from a past you can't remember?
Gotta keep what you have, tell me what is it for
If it made sense my friend well then not anymore
Every dream I'm told has its December

I've lost my way, kneel down and pray
It all decays, it takes me down, down, down
Like the minister said, like the minister said
Where this all has led... dead winter dead

--From "Dead Winter Dead" by Savatage

The scene slowly fades in from black, as "Captain Howdy" by Twisted Sister begins to play. We find ourselves looking on at a surprisingly family-friendly scene. We are in a living room, a very well-appointed one at that, with a leather couch across from a similar loveseat. A lit fireplace is in the far background, illuminating the room with a soft glow. Various assorted decorations give the place a comfortable feeling, one that the music we all know so well, does not convey. Even stranger to us, is the comfortable scene we see in the room.

Seated on the couch, wearing just a pair of jeans and an old Camp Carnage tshirt, is the man we all know as Captain Howdy. The look on his face is a strange one, at least for him. It is a true smile, one of contentment and happiness, as he looks down at the toddler in his lap. The young boy has hair that is starting to curl, much like his father's, and he is laughing and giggling as that man holds him and tickles him. Seated beside the normally fearsome fighter, is a beautiful brunette, the mother of this child, and wife to a maniac. She is also smiling, as she looks on and joins in the fun. To anyone else, this looks to be a normal family, on a regular evening. To those of us who know better, this is the Jacobs family, and as the music fades, we can hear the things they are saying to one another.

CAPTAIN HOWDY: He is growing so fast. All that time here at home, and he stayed pretty much the same. I go away for a couple of weeks, and poof...look at him now.

NADIA SNOW-JACOBS: I know. It's like he waited for you to be out of the house. It's good to have you home, but to be honest, I'm glad you're back in the ring.

CH: Oh? Why's that?

NSJ: It's been great having you here, having you around. Taking care of Jimmy, being here with Amanda and I. The thing is, I could see you were getting bored. You were looking for something, missing something, and there could only be one thing that could have been. And I have to say, you looked damn good in that match last week.

CH: I was a step slow. Rusty. I could feel it. It felt great to be back out there, but I'm wondering if I made the right choice.

NSJ: What do you mean? So you're a little rusty. You were gone for two years. That's going to happen. You still won. You'll get it back soon enough.

CH: Will I? Did I come back just to see my legacy get destroyed? What happens if I can't fight like I used to? All the Titles I won, all the years and opponents I defeated to build my legacy. If I can't do that anymore, does all that just get tarnished beyond repair?

NSJ: No, it won't. You won't let it. James, you built something amazing over your career. People want to see you, want to get in the ring with you, because of it. You're a legend.

CH: Legends fade, Nadia. I don't want to end up like some of those other guys on television. You know, huge names, world Champions, and at the end of their careers, they're nothing more than glorified enhancement talent. Sure, it was a great offer that they gave me, but maybe I shouldn't have taken it.

Nadia reaches out, and takes her husband by the chin. She gently, but firmly, turns his head toward her.

NSJ: You listen to me, and you listen good. There's a reason why they hired you, and brought you back. They knew what I know. You ARE a legend. You've done so much, and yet you still have so much to give. You're going to do nothing but build on that legacy, on that legend. And, you're going to start with this next match.

CH: Yes Maam.

NSJ: Damn right.

Nadia leans in, and kisses her husband soundly. When they move apart, the smile on both of their faces is nothing but pure happiness. She moves back, and takes their son off of his lap. He plants a kiss on the boy's forehead, and Nadia stands up, placing him on her hip.

NSJ: Well, Jimmy needs his bath, and you need to take care of some business. Remember who you are, and then remind them all.

CH: (smiling) I think I can do that. Nite little man.

James kisses his son on the forehead once again, and Nadia straightens and walks away. Howdy watches her go, then slowly turns back toward the camera. He sits back in the seat, and smirks a bit, before beginning to speak again.

CH: You know, all those things I just told my wife? They all went through my head right after I signed my contract with Redemption. Was I doing the right thing? Should I go back, and risk everything I built? I nearly called them back, and told them to tear my contract apart. I almost went back on my word, which is something I have spent most of my life striving not to do. But then, I had a revelation about Redemption.

Why would it be such a bad thing to go back? After all, I've done everything there is to do in this business. I've won every Title I've ever gone after. I've destroyed and demolished wrestler after wrestler, hero after hero. I've even taken apart more than my fair share of villains. I'm a member of four different Halls of Fame. What more is there for me to do?

Then, I figured it out. See, all of those things I just mentioned? The fact that so many people refer to me as a walking, talking, living legend? It just means I have set the bar very, very high. Not just for everyone else, but also for myself. I have a challenge now, and that challenge is to live up to that legend, to be that unstoppable, deadly force, that I have built myself up to be after all these years. But, not only do I have to be that good, that dangerous...

I have to be better.

So there it is, boys and girls. The madman, the demon, the savage, the monster, and all the other names I've been called over the years, is back in full force. I am looking to add to my legacy, and I am going to do it on the broken bodies and spilled blood of those here in Redemption. Step up and try your luck, if you dare. Just don't be surprised when you get left lying, like so many others have in the past.

My first target, here in Redemption, is the newly-minted Redemption Championship. The tournament is well underway, and I have found myself in the second round. If I may take a moment, I want to say something about my previous opponent. I faced a rookie in the business, by the name of Alister Valca. Alister, you came into this match, full of fire and desire. You acquitted yourself well, and I thank you for the spirited effort you put forth. You gave me a nice challenge to get me back into the swing of things. In the end, the my hand being raised in victory was the result, which I'm sure many expected. Take it from someone who has seen many wrestlers come and go over the years, you are going to be a force if you continue your current path. A single loss, at the hands of a far superior opponent, should not discourage you from going on. I do look forward to seeing how you progress. But, for now, you are no longer my focus.

Instead, I find myself in this tournament in a rather interesting situation. I am facing two men, one I have never met, and one I know all too well. The first, is a man who has spent years in smaller federations. He has spent years making long drives, and short money. Abel Essex, your path to a major federation has led you through some of the hardest, most soul-draining times that a man can go through. Believe it or not, I have a certain amount of respect for you, for the things you have done. It takes a great deal of perseverance to stay with it that long. And now, you've made it here, to what many people would consider the "major leagues". You're in a match with Title implications, which is important for someone with Title aspirations. There's just one, rather large problem.

You see, Abel, you have the misfortune of being in between two opponents who know each other about as well as any two competitors can be. We have been rivals, we have been opponents, and we have been Tag Team Title partners. You have to find some way to defeat two long-time veterans, who have had great success on the big stage. You may just end up as debris on the side of the ring, if you are not very careful. But, what do you really have to lose? If you somehow manage to pull out a victory, you'll have defeated two men who have done pretty much everything this business has to offer. Your stock will rise dramatically. If you lose, well, nobody will be terribly surprised, but you can still catapult yourself up the rankings with a good showing.

The thing is, will it all be worth it to you? For all those years, all those miles, you had someone you could come back to. You had someone waiting for you at home. Now, now that you've finally made it to the promised land, all of a sudden you have nobody at your side. Your girlfriend and child are both gone from your life. What happens if you win, and go on to claim that Title? You're going to bring it back to an empty house. Is that something you're prepared to handle? Is that something that you can live with? I have my wife, my son, though he doesn't know yet what daddy does for a living, and a very good friend who happens to be absent tonight. I have that support, that group in my corner. You have...what exactly? Perhaps you should be more concerned with putting your life back together than in chasing this particular dream. Nobody would fault you for that. And here's your bigger issue, Abel, what happens when you lose this match? You have nobody at home to help you tend to your wounds. You have nobody to tell you things will get better, that you are still a valid competitor. No, you'll just have to sit there, alone, wallowing in your pain and misery, wondering if you made the correct choice.

Howdy sits up a bit, and takes a glass from the table, swirling the amber liquid a few times before drinking it down. When he sits back, a smile has formed on his face, but that smile does not reach his eyes. Those eyes are once again cold, emotionless, and shark-like. After a moment, he speaks again.

On the other side of this equation, is a man whom I have been friends and enemies, rivals and brothers with over the years. Jason, you and I have left a path of devastation in our wake in a number of places. Now, we're set to do much the same here. However, before we can do that, as has happened so often before, we must first face each other. I foresee you and I standing toe to toe, after we have disposed of Abel, in order to decide the winner of this contest. Then, let the blood fall where it may. I own far more victories over you than the reverse, and I see no reason why this trend would not continue. Oh, I know the Angel will likely make an appearance, but to be honest, I welcome him. It's always more fun when he shows up. My Other has been looking forward to this ever since the match was announced. That, by itself, should terrify you.

And I see that your daughter, Brandy, is back by your side. She has grown into quite the striking young lady. I'd make a comment about who her real father might be, but you and I have covered that ground so many times now, just bantering in the locker room area of some arena, somewhere in the world. Tell her that I said hello, and I hope she is doing well. Also, you might want to tell her to keep her distance in this match, because if she doesn't, it's just going to go worse for you.

Jason, when this is over, perhaps you and I should talk. After all, we've had great success in the past as a team, or part of a faction. I see no reason why that cannot happen again. You're just going to have to accept your place as the man who stands beside the Champion. You've done that before, so it won't be a stretch to do so once again. This won't be your night, Jason. You're not going to defeat me, regardless of whether or not your friend makes himself known. No, you're going to watch me move on to the next step, and claim that Redemption Title for myself. And, just like Abel, there will be nothing you can do about it.

Gentlemen, both of you are nothing more than the next two additions to my legacy. Neither of you has what it will take to put me down, and make me go away. No, we're going to play a very interesting game of tag on this night. We're going to go out there, and see which of us plays the game the best. Of course, you may know by now that, I am the one that makes the rules for any game I play. I am the one who sets the course, and the one who decides when the game ends. I am the one who will decide for the both of you when PLAYTIME'S OVER!!! And you're just going to have to deal with that fact. I already see you as rubble along my path to the Redemption Title. Want to prove me wrong? Take your best shot. Just remember, when you're done...

I will get to take my own.

We'll see you both soon. Sleep tight, and say a few prayers, most especially if you want to emerge from this alive.

The Captain chuckles a bit, before he stands, and heads toward the back of the room, where a long corridor goes off into some other part of the house. He doesn't look back at all, simply moving ahead until he has turned a corner, and the scene slowly fades to black after he disappears.
