The sound of a fork scrapes across a plate chasing one of the few green beans left. Finally, the fork found its prey and stabs the green bean, before dunking it into the half eaten pile of mashed potatoes smothered with white homestyle gravy. The fork slowly raises up, disappears into a mouth, and comes back out. The fork clangs against the plate as it's dropped for the final time. Ironclad stands up, reaches into his pocket and throws a few bills down on the table. He turns to the left, grabs his helmet and walks towards the exit in silence. Once outside he grabs his shades and puts them on. All of a sudden he feels someone next to him. He turns to his right and sees a man sitting on the ground looking tired and hungry. The man looks up at Ironclad with hopeful eyes. Sorry….not today, says Ironclad in a soft voice. The man looks back at Ironclad in disgust, mumbles something under his breath, and turns away. Ironclad stares back at the man for a second then walks towards his bike as his boots echo off the blacktop. Before he gets on his bike, he turns and looks at the ragged, worn down beggar. He stands there for a second with a serious look on his face We used to use guys like those as patsys. Anytime we needed something transported to and from somewhere, those were the guys. No one would suspect them because of the way they looked. We protected them as payment, and killed them if the product ended up missing. There was always a few John Doe’s lying around somewhere. Ironclad stops and thinks for a minute, there was a few he was responsible for. It was his job to enforce the punishment if the shipment went missing. Nothing personal, just business. Nobody would miss them anyway, as they have no families, no jobs, and no identity. They were the perfect patsies. Readily available and easily replaceable. A smile comes across Ironclad face. It would be nice to take care of another John Doe. Those were easy, they put up no fight at all. How about you John, are you gonna put up a fight? Or are you going to lie there and take your beating like a coward? Me and you are a lot alike John, we always had to claw and scrape to get to where we want to be. We love to fight, its what we do. The difference between me and you is, I fought harder, while bums like you, just gave up. What makes you think it will be any different this time? I'm higher on the food chain than you. The only reason you breathe the same air I do, is because I let you. The only handout you're going to receive from me is my fist across your jaw, and my boot in your ass. I feel sorry for you John, I really do. You might mean well, but you're swimming with sharks. Sharks that will rip.your head off in a moment's notice. You claim you have nothing to lose, but in all reality John, you do. What's gonna happen when you can't eat because your mouth is wired shut? Or you can’t stick out your cup to receive money, because your arm is broken like a twig. Is it really worth it John? Ask yourself that question Ironclad gets on his bike, starts the machine, and revs it a couple times. He drives up to the old beggar, and stares at him. Ironclad reaches in his pocket, and tosses him a quarter. He revs up 7his bike and peels out. |
