The one thing about John Doe, his strongest quality, has always been heart. He’ll never back down and he’ll never give up. He’ll claw hand and foot, bite tooth and nail, and he’ll bring every bit of fight he can until he can’t stand on his own. Because of this trait, the one thing he hates and loathes more than anything is the person who lacks heart.

-continued-

John Doe felt at home under the lights and the camera. It eased him. He was good with people and had a certain charm and charisma to him that people flocked to, though John didn’t realize this. All he knew was the ease it was for him to be around people and he enjoyed the presence of others. He was clueless to the fact that most people didn’t possess that personality trait, that many clammed up and were anxious. Glossophobia was not an issue for John Doe.

That’s what made this interview so enjoyable for John. He was able to talk, to be friendly, to be charismatic.

Penny Wilson could tell there was something special that set John aside from everyone else. Behind the wild hair, bushy beard, the unkempt look, there was gold there. He was someone like unlike anyone she had ever met in her life.

Penny glanced at her notes for a brief second and then continued her interview.

Penny Wilson: How did you bridge all this into fighting?

John Doe: Well I’s always big, ya see. Even as a young lad, I was a head taller than all of ‘em. That made ol’ John Doe a target for dem the older kids. They used to like ta pick on me and terrorize me. Then one day ol’ Dudley, who was the closest thing a daddy I ever had, he took my hands and held it in a fist ya know, to prove a point. And he says to John Doe, he goes “Johnny”, he calls me Johnny, “Johnny, ya let the world run over ya yer whole life and you'll be the world’s punching bag. But ya stand up and smack it back in the mouth, and you’ll earn it’s respect.”

Penny Wilson: So what did you do?

John Doe: Well the next time I was out collectin’ cans and those bullies came at me, I doubled up my big ol’ mitts for hands and I popped ‘em all three in the face and dropped ‘em all. After that, they left me alone. That was my first fight it was, and ya know what I found?

Penny Wilson: What’s that?

John Doe: I loved it, I did. It was such a rush. It made me feel alive. For once I’s had control and I was good at sumfin.

Penny Wilson: So when did the money fights come in?

John Doe: One of da other guys that lived in the empty factory with us, Jimmy, while da rest of us was eatin scraps, he was eatin real food. Like TV dinners, those there Ramen noodles. He was like the King of the Bums with his high livin’, and he made that money fightin’ in bum fights. So I says to myself, I says “John, you can do that. You can eat like a king and ya can help feed some of the people here who can’t feed themselves”....so I entered into my first bum fight…

-to be continued-

Point Roulette it is, or is it? I's not sure which is proper. Yer good ol' boy John Doe knows a little sumthin' about roulette. John Doe's old friend Harry, well he was what they call unstable he was. He says the war messed him all up. One day good ol' John Doe's friend Harry decided ta play a lil roulette with his service gun and he lost.

Roulette's a game a of chance it is. Ya bet big and ya win big. I's told my agent, Larry Slate, the good man he is, that I's wanna bet big and bet large. I's wanna make a big splash by fightin' two former champs and a former contender alls in one match. John Doe wanted the former International Champion CG3, the former TV Champion JC, and the former contender for the Redemption belt, Howdy.

One thing John Doe has learned in his years fightin' is you beat the biggest dog on the street early and da rest of dem'll crumble. I'm not afraid, no I'm not.

But then this little sissy, JC, he decided to hide like a coward he did. I shoulda backed out, I shoulda, and tooks the real match. Fought a real man like that there Captain Howdy. I’m not scared. I’m not scared of anyone. I almost did ya know, but I's wanted to make a point that maybe it's big ol' John Doe he shoulda been afraid of, ya know.

Ya gots to wonder if ol’ JC’s daddy be proud of ‘em? From what I’s hear his daddy was a legend of some kind, so how’s the legend feel ‘bout his boy duckin’ matches and hiding like a scared kid hides under his bed? It makes him a disgrace to his daddy's name and legacy is what it does.

Thing is, bein’ afraid does no one any good. Ya got to conquer your fear. Ya want fear? Fear isn’t climbing in the ring with the Captain. Fear is sleeping in the street in da middle of the winter. Fear is not knowin’ if yer gonna eat at all. When ya live my life you learn not to fear anything because every day can be yer last. Ya’d think this Keeton pretty boy would know that after the life he lived, but he’s forgotten his lessons he has.

Another reason daddy must be ashamed.

JC’s a coward full of fear. Dodging big dogs like a kid dodges a ball. But a fighter like me, we can smell da fear, we can. We can use that there fear to win a fight.

The thing is ya see, this is more than a match to be ducked fer me. This is life or death. I gots a huge chance I do. I can cash in and become the champ if I win this here roulette thing. Ya know how much that could help yer ol’ boy John Doe? I can use dat money to get on my feet and refine myself, I can.

Ol’ JC shoulda ducked me. He can't beat me ya see. I'm not yer normal wrestler ya see. My no formal training makes me a whole new kinda monster it does. I'm a fighter not a wrestler. As a fighter yer good ol’ boy John Doe is the best, I am. And I’s know that no one here can outfight me. Pretty boy JC has never fought a fighter like me, he hasn't. He's outta his comfort zone and he's gonna lose he is.

JC will lose cause, yeah, he's a better wrestler than me, most of em in Redemption are. But he's not a better fighter and he don't have the heart your good ol’ John Doe has. That's what this is. It's a fight ya see. It's a fight for points and a fight for a title shot. A fight pretty boy JC can't win. Ya can do all your arm bars, wrist locks, headlocks, ankle locks, and the whatever other locks they do in these wrestling matches, but what are ya gonna do when good ol’ John Doe gets his hands around your neck and starts to squeeze the life from ya? When I take my big huge ol’ hand, double it up in a fist, and I crush it down on your nose so hard ya can’t breath properly out of it. When my big ol’ size sixteen nearly rips your head from your neck.

Yer gonna fold and crumble is what yer gonna do. Yer gonna wish you didn’t fight me. Yer gonna beg for Howdy, you are. Because with Howdy you know what ya got yerself into. With me, ya don’t. Yer daddy didn’t prepare you for someone like me because there is no one else like John Doe.

You’ll crumble because it takes heart to fight and a coward doesn't possess any heart, he doesn’t. Ya don’t have the heart of a fighter and ya don’t have the heart of a champion, cause a fighter, a champion, they don’t run from it. They embrace it and they fight until they have no fight left in ‘em, and then they fight some more.

It makes you a disappointment. Not just to yer daddy, but to yer fans and to yourself.

You dodged Howdy. Ya thought you made the smart move, you did. You didn’t. You shoulda dodged me pretty boy. Ya shoulda dodged John Doe. Howdy is the least of yer worries.
