Crushing on someone can be a fickle bitch. -continued- The longer the interview went on, the more he found her attractive. John reached to his messy mane and tried to flatten his hair. He smiled wide and often, thanking the good lord he had all his teeth. Deep down though, it stung him like the prick of a bee. He knew what he was and knew what he looked like. The unkempt hair, the bushy beard, the wild man look. No education, barely able to read, improper grammar. In no reality did someone like Penny Wilson find any attraction in someone like John Doe. And that's what always hurt. It wasn't just her, Penny Wilson. It was everyone. They either looked at John terrified or they looked at John and felt pity. No one outside of his homeless network saw John for what he was worth, nor did they ever take notice that John had one of the biggest hearts and was one of the most empathetic people they'd ever come across. While the words to express how he felt always escaped John, this is what always rumbled in the pit of his stomach and he carried it with him like an invisible weight on his shoulders. Looking at Penny, though, she looked at him differently. He could read people usually. Too trusting he might be, but he could get a read on how people felt about him. Penny looked at him not out of pity or fear, but out of respect and admiration. That was what developed his crush over the course of this interview. But John new the gravity of the situation. People like Penny didn't get involved with people like John. Penny Wilson: So you served an eighteen month sentence in prison? What was that like? John Doe: That was what they like to call a mixed blessing it was. See, good ol' John Doe finally had a warm bed to lay his head at night and I got three warm meals a day without havin' to dig in that there trash. That was the best living of my life. Penny Wilson: But? John Doe: But it was violent, it was. See, it's like them there shows where everyone wants to be the top dog. Alls of 'em are tryin' to play for power and get one over on ya. At times it reminded me of that movie with Mel Gibson, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. There's us as prisoners laborin' hard, but we fightin' among ourselves and people dying in these fights. It was a scary time for your ol' boy John Doe, it was. Penny Wilson: I imagine it was. Not a place I'd really care to be. Now, tell me, wasn't it in prison that you met Larry Slate? John Doe: Yes ma'am it was. See, Larry was one of the guards. He was much smaller then, not quite so.... John searched for a word that wasn't insulting to his handler but when it escaped him Penny nailed it for him. Penny Wilson: Robust, he wasn't quite so robust. John Doe: Yeah, I guess that's the right word. Larry was one of the guards though. And see, your good ol' boy John Doe was having problems at first. I'm not a bad man, I'm a nice guy most of the time and people took advantage of that, they did. See, anytime we had a good meal, I's was left with hardly nothing to eat because they'd take my food and I's too nice to do anything about it. Then one day I's had enough. See, these four guys with them head's shaved and these German flag tattoos was harrassin' me a lot... Penny Wilson: Neo-Nazi skinheads? John Doe: Yeah, that's it. So these guys were harrassin' me and finally I was like Popeye. I's had all I can stand, and I can't stand no more, so I beat the tar out of those four skinheads at the same time. That's when Mr. Slate stepped in, he broke up the fight after I'd done my thing, and from then on, Larry told me I had a future after I got out of prison, and Mr. Slate took care of me from then on. After that your good ol' boy John Doe never had to give up his food and no one messed with me anymore because Mr. Slate made sure of it. The only fights I's had after that was the ones where all the guards was bettin' on them in a more organized way.... -to be continued...again- The perfect chance I's got, I do. I's so good at my job that a few weeks ago I beat that there Ironclad biker to get to fight for the Classic Championship, and now I have my shot. You know how much bonus money I'll get if I win? I don't, that's why I'm askin', but maybe it'll be enough to pay off my Winnebago already? That'd be nice, it would. John Doe, Winnebago owner. First your good ol' boy John Doe has to beat Eva Broussard though. The Cajun Beauty herself. I knew a Cajun once, I's couldn't hardly understand a word he said. Normally this here would be where I tell Eva how bad I'm a gonna beat her and how she don't stand no chance against good ol' John Doe, but I's feel like that would be a waste of time because the mega-bitch already knows it. See, there was a lot of guessin' games goin' around about who attacked me. Most believed the Captain himself did it, but it wasn't. It was that mega-bitch poor excuse of a champion, Eva Broussard. Now I ask ya'll, please excuse me here. I'm normally respectful towards women, I am. But this Eva, she's no woman, she's a...what's the word for it...succubus. She's a blood sucking demon. But anyway, I got sidetracked. I don't have to tell ol' Eva just how badly I'll beat her because she already knows this. She knows she can't be John Doe, she does. She knows she's in for a fight she has no chance of winning, she does, because if she thought she could win she wouldn't have tried to take out your good ol' boy John Doe. See, she was tryin' to avoid the fight. She thought she could blindside the happy bum and take out a threat. I's in prison once, it's prison mentality. Attack the guy you can't beat from behind and make sure he don't ever get a chance to beat you. Eva made a big mistake though. She didn't finish the job correctly. See, she messed up. She thought what she did would just keep me down. Sure, it kept me down for two weeks, but now I'm back in time for the match and I'm ready to go, and she has one pissed off wild man coming after her. That's the thing. I's been impressive so far if I must toot my own horn. People like me and people know I can fight. No one in Redemption can out fight your good ol' boy John Doe, and that's been me bein' nice. Think about that, Ms. Broussard-Davies. Think about what it's gonna be like when you look across that ring at a 6'5" 260 pounds pissed off prize fighter! You try to act bad but I bet you go all soft like clay and go runnin' and hide behind your pretty boy husband like, pardon my French, but the bitch that you are. I say this cause you showed your fear when you attacked me and now like any real fighter I can smell it. But it's your fault, it is. You're the one, Eva, who pissed me off. You're not a finisher. If you were a finisher you'd finished me off when you had the chance two weeks ago, you woulda. You didn't. Like the cock roach, you let me stick around and now you'll be overrun. Now it's my turn. I'll be the finisher. At For Love of Gold your finished. Your fight with me, your reign as champion, it's done, it is. Your gonna get yourself John Doed. |
