so, rationale:

Snake pit:
I think a designated asshole area takes down the entire tone of a forum, especially considering how ACTIVE the snake pit is with threads like "dear jerk" and "complaints department." not that I haven't used those too, but the "this is the designated shithead area" tempts threads like those too much. I don't like it and i think it is a negative-ass vibe. I don't think outright flaming is appropriate on a forum of this nature. but I don't want to quash discussion, so that's why I thought the debate subforum could be a good idea - people would still know it's heavier discussion in there, but no actual flaming would be allowed. Civil and even strong disagreement should be encouraged/accepted. Imo it's fine for members to tell each other when they think they're out of line/behaving inappropriately.

Support group:
I think having a support group is a good idea in theory but in practice it leads to people asking for advice on things people in any given community aren't equipped to advise on. I think it creates a false expectation that the people in the community are able to help when they can't. That isn't to say people should not be supportive, but I think it's unreasonable for people to ask advice on a lot of things they do.
My idea for an alternative is a stickied list of mental health resources; if people make threads that indicate they need mental health help, I'd prefer we move their thread into our version of the dumping ground and then redirect them to that sticky.

ANYWAY, THOUGHTS
