The young man, illuminated by the strong purple hue from his magic circle, was getting more worried as the evening set.
Arriving to this area has proven to be a mistake rather than a shortcut, resulting in his imprisonment to this wretched forest!
With a wave of his hand, Michael dismissed his dispelling magic circle out of the way, once again enveloping him in darkness. He scratched his stubbled chin in thought, looking this way and that way.
"Something isn't right indeed..." he murmured, observing his surrounding with careful eyes. He deduces this place is under a powerful spell... or worse - a powerful curse. One that he couldn't break out of.

And it was making him very, very nervous.

A small chirp interrupted his train of thought, causing him to turn around on his floating broom.
His eyes lit up upon recognizing the sound.
"Solomon!" he exclaimed happily, as a small redbrested robin approached his way. Extending his right arm and fingers, the tiny creature landed smoothly on his palm.
"Any luck sweetheart?" Michael asked his winged friend, and was rewarded with a long chain of twittering. His facial expression turned grimmer with each of it's tweets, both sides of his mouth turning downwards comically.
"My my... it's seems that we are stuck now, are we?" turning his head to look around again, he noticed how misty it suddenly became in the clear night sky.
The bird's whistle got his attention again, as it began chirping some more. Michael's eyebrows shot up and a glint was evident in his eyes.
"Really! Now that is interesting! I should write it down then... for future reference...!"
Retreating his arm, the robin flapped in place in front of Michael. With a flip of his wrist and a puff of violet smoke, a small notebook covered in purple velvet appeared in his hand, along with a quill. He opened it to write neatly in it's ivory colored pages.
"Hmm... there also seems to be a village of some sort around here, in addition to that castle you mentioned... But we will check it later." Closing the notebook swiftly and poofing it away, Michael began lowering to the thick forest underneath him as Solomon followed him shortly.
Landing faintly, Michael eyed the massive trees around him and listened to the night sounds. It seemed to him nothing suspicious were to be noted.
For now...
Sending his broom away with another cloud of smoke, he turned back to the small bird.
"You can go for now, I think I'll be fine. But don't be too far dear!"
The bird titled it's small head to the side, before disappearing in a hasty flap of it's wings into the night sky.
Michael looked until the small dot disappeared in the distance, and then turned around towards a random spot, his long grey cape swishing behind him.
"Now... Where should I start?"

Sera loved dusk for the same reason she loved dawn in Streitstadt. Those transitional moments held a certain kind of energy. An odd quiet would quickly grow over the town as the sun set. It was as if the entire population was made up of morning glories, rather than people. Human behavior, especially in groups, had always fascinated her, but it was the silence in those liminal moments that were almost magical. Not that she believed in magic.

She nearly forgot herself in her own musings. With a shake of her head, she snapped out of her trance and began to frantically run about grabbing a few things from her room. Arms full of writing implements and books, Sera raced out of her room and towards the edge of the forest.

Posted Image

Sera's mind sprung in to action immediately trying to find a rational explanation for the event. Her feet took a second longer to direct her body in the glow's direction.

"It's too far south for an aurora borealis," she murmured as she did her best to balance her things and run safely through the woods. What little light was left didn't offer much in the way of help. She stumbled momentarily on the twisted root of a tree.

"Damn," she cursed, " No, maybe a meteor?"
It wasn't the right time of year for a specific shower. She was completely entranced by the possibilities, forgetting her arrangement with the Gladys. Hopefully the young girl would wait. The lessons had been going quite well so far.

"What about...," her foot hit a small rock jutting out from ground and she toppled over, sending her and her things flying into the clearing in the woods from where the lights had originated. She rolled about until her momentum slowed and she was able to sit up. Her brain spun momentarily, but her eyes were able to fix on a blurry figure before her.

"Hello?"

Something bumping into Michael's boot got his attention on high alert.
Turning on his heel and swishing his long cape, there didn't seem to be anything around.
"Is someone there? Show yourselves---"
Glancing down, said item was a scroll of some sort. A brief look indicated it was written in runes, which he couldn't read. Michael picked it up and raised an eyebrow at the oddly placed scroll.

"Hello?" a timid voice called out. Michael furrowed his forehead. Where is that voice coming from...
Looking around him quickly, a small figure was hunched on the ground not too far. The moonlight silhouetting it's small frame and a wild mane. A tiny gleam from the ground outlined the shape of glasses. A person...?
"Oh dear-" hasting towards the body and discarding the scroll, Michael stepped on a few more papers and kicked a book on his way. "Oops! I'll take care of that later..."
Approaching the figure, it turned out to be a young woman rubbing a few scratches and brushing away leafs and twigs stuck in her hair. Crouching over, he picked up her discarded spectacles and offered a helping hand with a charming smile.
"Are you alright darling? Looks like your stuff flew all around here..."

The twilight tumbled around her before Sera rolled to a stop. “Are you alright, darling?”  She hadn’t anticipated a voice and was even slightly more confused when it was one she didn’t recognize. But that accent she did.

“Ah, thank you,” she replied in English to test her theory. Her eyes strained without glasses to focus on the hand stretched out to her. Once she recognized the hand as simply that and not a threat, she took it up with a firm grasp. “And my apologies,” she added as her gaze fell loosely upon the blurred figure standing above her. “I was being careless.” With or without his help, Sera would demonstrate little hesitation in pulling herself up.

Michael would notice her eyes wander a bit, as if she were looking for something despite her vision already being impaired. The source of the light was gone. She had missed it and, in doing so, made a complete mess of herself and her plans. Gladys would have to wait a little while longer for her reading lesson.

Oh! A Brit!
A pleasant surprise, if you asked him. Not that his German was bad - thank you very much - be speaking his native tongue was a relieve. The younger woman finally grabbed at his palm, and he gladly helped her up, handing her the discarded glasses. Good thing they didn't break.
"There is no need to fret, sweetheart. No harm done!" Michael replied in a cheerful tone, adjusting his robes slightly. He did hope no damage inflicted to the books and scrolls though.

A moment passed, Michael was expecting further exchange of words - maybe he should introduce himself? - when he finally noticed the other looking for something, gaze wandering around in the dark.
"Have you lost anything else? My apologies for the books and parchments... I didn't notice them when I approached. May I give you a hand with these?" he began picking up the different pieces from the ground, brushing away any stray dirt, as well as glimpsing at the contents of a few.
Some of them were diagrams, and many of the books seemed ancient but well preserved.

How very interesting...

I might add a draw... later... maybe... =H=;;;

Darling. Sweetheart.

The words caused the muscles in her body to tense up. How many men had she met that threw those words at her throughout her career to demean her, infantilize her gender? The worst memories came from men in the field who usually followed those words with, “let me help you” when it came to work she was fully equipped to handle. Of course, the stranger knew nothing of her past so she was not quick to judge him, but she began to quickly gather data in order to devise an opinion. The accent she couldn’t quite place, same with the choice of clothes. She was intrigued .

“Ah, thank you,” she finally answered, shutting down her analytical thoughts and helping Michael collect her things. Well, he was thoughtful and friendly; two things she couldn’t find fault in. Before they were full, Sera ran her hands thoughtlessly through her hair before dusting herself off. “And if anything is damaged, I take full responsibility for that,” she piled the documents back the way she had originally. “Did you….,” she started, “ did you happen to see a flash of bright light in this direction? I thought it might have been some kind of marsh gas, but we are nowhere near the river wetlands.”

He watched with mild interest as the stranger woman reorganized her documents, once he placed them back in her hands. Now that they weren't full, Michael placed both of his hands on his hips, waiting again for something... to be said? Done? He shouldn't occupy himself too much with other people's matters - not that he was expecting to run into anyone in this enchanted forest at this time of the day. It was beginning to dark as well, so finding some place safe would be wise.... Maybe Solomon would have more information once he's---

His inner rambling were cut off by the woman speaking.
"Hm? What? Lights?" Michael blinked at her, confused for a split moment before it hit him.
Oh.
OH.
Oh no...
Yes, he most definitely did not expect to run into any snoopy humans, who might bump into him while he used his magic. Oh dear, how will he get out of that one...?
"Oh hmm... No....? Nothing I noticed, really...?" he tried to muster up his best innocent smile, though he could feel some sweat building up at the back of his neck, feeling on edge. They were way off from any natural phenomenons to cause this kind of light - especially a purple one - but he might as well try his luck...

Sera’s eyebrow raised upwards as Michael tap-danced with the truth. It wasn’t that she didn’t believe his act. No, she was willing to give a stranger the benefit of the doubt. However, his story did align with the facts or at least her perception of what had happened. The lights had come from this direction, surely. Unless it was some kind of occurrence that required a very specific vantage point, he should've seen them. Michael would see her eyes go distant as she tried to make sense of it all.

“Well, that is curious,” she concluded as she moved around him and into the clearing looking for some kind of clue. She knelt down cautiously so as not to drop any of her books or papers and examined the ground. There were no scorch marks or debris, rendering some kind of explosion or fire out of the question. Without missing a beat, Sera popped back up on to her feet and began to sniff around. There was something lingering in the air, but she couldn’t quite place it.

“Which direction did you come from,” she quizzed the stranger, “do you smell that…” Like a bloodhound, she moved about the open space looking to catch faint traces of an odor she felt was important to link to the strange, purple lights. The current conundrum completely consumed her conscious. She had forgotten her manners and, instead of offering her name, she excitedly proclaimed the source, “Sulfur!”

Michael fidgeted for a few moments, still struggling to come up with any kind of logical explanation to his behavior or lack of observance. Sure, he could just say he was lost - which was true! - but it won't provide answers to this odd lady's questions. Most importantly, he didn't know if he should slowly back away from this situation, or be kind enough to escort her back to the nearest town. Truthfully - maybe she could guide him towards said town.... Now that he's stuck here, that is.

Stupid ancient magic!

He followed her with his eyes, wondering what was she looking for... And why?
What does it matter where these lights came from? People around here probably know of the supernatural more than any other major cities in Germany, from his experience. They would rather inquire about his odd fashion choices instead. Rude.

"Which direction---?" he was startled by another question, before observing the other sniffing around like some kind of beast, looking for it's prey's scent. What is she doing...?
Michael didn't even reply to her question, and instead - was intrigued by this new person. Giving her a second look - no that it was easy to see in this dim natural light - he realized she's not just a normal tourist.
Explorer? Geologist? Or maybe even an archaeologist? She was carrying an awful lot of books and scrolls to just be returning them to the local library. And surly, these clothes were used for vast travels and long hours in the open wild. Only thing missing is a deerstalker and a magnifying glass and you got yourself a perfect Sherlock!
He padded behind her silently, peering over her shoulder to catch a glimpse of whatever it is she might be following. Luckily, he straightened quickly enough before the crown of her head met with his nose as she exclaimed "Sulfur!".
Ah - a scientist perhaps.
"Not likely - you need to get closer to the Alps to find any traces of that. Further more, you'll have to extract it from pyrite and that would take WAY too much time.... And fire. Lots of fire." maybe showing some minor knowledge would distract her from asking any more questions.... and maybe this is a good smoke screen. "Maybe someone is extracting sulfur from pyrite - and these are possibly the lights you saw..." in the middle of the forest. At night time.

Sera threw her new companion a judgmental stare; not because of what he was wearing or his inability to observe large light phenomena , but because of his faulty logic. She wiggled a hand free and pushed her glasses up her nose. For a moment, just a moment, she bit her tongue. ~This is how you make the wrong impression, Sera!~ Her mother’s words rang in her head. But reason bubbled up within her chest like a geyser and rupture outwards towards Michael.

“Sulfur from pyrite, out here?” She looked around the clearing at the tree line. “We are in the midst of the Hercynian Forest which sits primarily on a crystalline basement. Where would one find a rich enough deposit pyrite without a sedimentary base?” Did the gentleman know something she didn’t? Sera was sure she had done her research on the area prior to her arrival, and geology was at the top of her list. “The nearest vein is well beyond city limits. At least a day or two ride south.”

She began to pace as her mind ran through her notes and as well as what Michael had said. Her free hand waved about as her other hand did a poor job balances her books. “And sulfur extraction is not that difficult of a task, if you have the right materials… to distill it.” She put the emphasis on the last part as it would not have produced the light. Sera continued to pace. A few pieces of parchment fluttered to the ground around her. “If anything, I’d assume the wetlands were a possible source of the sulfuric scent.” Her nose twitched once more. “And the smell’s already dissipated, giving greater credence to the theory that’s the source was natural.” The biggest flaw in Sera’s line of reasoning was that she was not considering a supernatural origin. Her mind completely rejected the idea outright.

The color drained from her face as a thought dawned on her. She nearly dropped her books as she ran over to Michael. “My apologies,” she blurted, “I’ve completely forgotten to introduce myself.” She mumbled to herself about manners as she juggled the books in her one hand once so she could extend the other to him. “My name is Sera Edwards… Professor Edwards, Institute of Archaeology in London. I’m here to conduct research.” The words tumbled over her lips in a less than eloquent fashion as color rose to her cheeks. Intelligent though she may be, she lacked the social graces that would’ve earned her high marks in charisma. Get her drunk and that was another story.

Ah yes, better not try to outsmart the smarter one Michael
Sure, he was way off with his smoke screen idea - but it did get her to change the subject and rumble on about chemical elements. As she was trudging around, train of though already at full speed, he managed to save a few pieces of loose paper. Taking another small peek at them, he was getting more confused by the moment.

This person is real something...

Just as he looked up, hands on hips, the woman turned around swiftly, tomes nearly toppling by her sharp gesture. For a moment, he just stood there, looking dazed as she struggled with words and introduced herself.
A PROFESSOR! No wonder...
He scolded himself internally, clearly knowing he's made a fool of himself in front of her. Never be a smart-ass again....
Michael blinked, then gave a kind yet wary smile. He shook her left hand with his own, a bit slow and unsure.
"Ehm--- Michael Burton... Um---" he loosened his grip and placed the missing parchments in her hand. "Novice herbalist. My apologies on that wrong call - surely you know more than I do about this area... Did you..." his gaze darted, trying to pinpoint the direction she was coming from, "Are you returning to the... nearest town by a chance?"

“It’s a pleasure, Mister Burton.”

Sera wasn’t exactly sure how to read Michael’s response. She could look at a landscape and classify its geography down to the ph of the soil. Yet living breathing humans and their complex reactions were a bit of a mystery to her. Had she upset him somehow? He didn’t strike her as the kind to expect formal introductions, but his smile betrayed another emotion she couldn’t quite put her finger on. His hand was replaced with the papers, which by now Michael would see they were covered with text for a reading and writing lesson. It had been a few weeks since Sera had last met with the young girl, Gladys. They were making some progress, although p’s and b’s were proving to be a little difficult.

“An herbalist,” she looked at him up and down. Not that she had met many, but they certainly didn’t dress like that. Who knows, he could be on his way to a fancy dress party. The townspeople were a unique group. “What brings you this way? A webcap perhaps?” She had already spotted more than her fair share of the toxic fungi in the forest. It was a surprise there were more cases of sickness in town. “I just arrived in town not too long ago to conduct some research.” As best she could, Sera shoved the papers into the books she had brought with to read while Gladys practiced her script. “ And I was supposed to meet with a young woman from town for a writing lesson. Usually I meet her at the edge of the woods.” She was on her way until the uncanny purple light flared up.

“But sometimes she doesn’t show,” Sera said, “ I could take you into town if you’d like.”

Gladys fluttered through the night sky, hoping she wasn't too late for her lesson with Sera. Some nights she lost track of time, some nights she simply just didn't want to go. She felt bad, knowing Sera was waiting for her alone and unprotected at the edge of the forest, but then she'd just snuggle deeper under the covers and hug a thrall and try to put the woman out of her mind and conscience.
But mostly it was because she was frustrated with the lessons and was self conscious of her shortcomings. But if anything she was stubborn, and once she got over being wounded in her pride, she'd show up again to continue learning.

Hearing two sets of voices this time, Gladys landed farther away than she normally did, just to be extra sure she wasn't spotted. And because she needed the time to walk over to cool off. A man? Bothering Sera? Who was it? Why shouldn't she kill him?

Putting on her most natural looking smile she walked up behind them, pretending to not notice the man at first, "Sera~ sorry I'm late I--" She let her face fall, it was very easy. Leaning to the side she looked around Sera and asked, "Is he bothering you?" Those crosses weren't endearing him to her any faster either, and she wrinkled her nose a bit at him and his wardrobe.

Michael eyed Sera, attentive and yet, still a bit nervous. He was grateful his usual cover has worked out - even though he caught her staring at his clothing a couple of times with a wary gaze. Not that he was going to comment about it...

"Yes, among other things..." he replied, adjusting his cloak as he spoke. "I'm conducting a small research of my own-" a lie "mostly documenting some specimens, collecting samples and so on..." not really a lie...
He looked around, not quite sure what he was looking for but avoiding further eye contact with the lady. He was getting the feeling he might stumble any moment, even though he was positive she is of no threat to him... There is always the sleep powder...
Although, hearing about her strange teaching habits drew his attention again, as well as rewarding her a confused frown.
"You're meeting someone here? At this cursed forest in the middle of the night?" his own fingers twitched at his own slip of the tongue - of course he had to jinx himself.
He coughed, correcting himself. "I mean, that's what I heard anyway... Townsfolk around these areas were very circumspect about this particular sector... I've been warned and advised to avoid it..."
Just as he was about to inquire about her student, he could hear some more rustling from the bushes behind him, turning swiftly with a cautious stare.
A... Girl?
And she was speaking to Sera. Said student, perhaps? Still an odd situation.
The smaller woman gave him the stink eye, and she had a rather shabby complexion and ragged clothes. And he was pretty sure - there was something else about her not quite right.
She was speaking German - if you could call it that. What kind of accent was THAT - addressing Sera, asking her if he was... harassing her? Rude.
His eyes skimmed from Sera to the eccentric person, and back to Sera with a puzzled look.
"THIS is the girl you were speaking of?" he completely ignored the German speaker, addressing Sera in English. "She's not very polite...."
His eyebrow rose, arms folded as he spoke to the other now, with spoken German. "For your information, we're having a civil conversation... I'm not bothering Fraulein Edwards at all."

“Gladys!”

A smile spread across Sera’s face. The promise of a night full of teaching and learning broke up the monotony of her research and brought her joy. She was aware of her pupil’s shortcomings, but admired her determination. It would take time, but the young girl would surprise everyone. Of that, Sera had no doubt.

“No need to apologize.”

The subtle interaction between the witch and the vampire went completely over Sera’s head. As such, she was taken aback when Michael spoke the way he did. German tumbled into English with a smidgen of Old German thrown in as Sera switched languages.

“Indeed it is,” Sera walked up beside the young girl like a doting nanny, knowing her charge was acting out but willing to attribute it to age. “She’s quite lovely once you get to know her.” Her head dipped down to acknowledge her pupil.

“He is correct,” she said once more in German. “In fact, Mister Burton was quite forgiving of my neglegentia* I believe he was looking for a path into town when I ran into him, if I’m not mistaken.” At least, that had been the direction of their conversation prior to Gladys’s arrival. If he was staying in town, she would have to pick his brains about the local flora. He may even have a book or two she could use for her research. “And he’s interested in the plants around the forest! You probably know of the perfect συγκυνηγέται**.”

Gladys moved closer to Sera, smiling up at her. Though she couldn't follow most of what was being said it sounded complimentary. If anything, she was just glad for the proximity, the attention, the smiles of her teacher. She looked back to stare suspiciously at Michael, but begrudgingly took Sera's word, "Alright, if you say so. We will help him back to town then we can start my lessons, yes?" she softly implored, wanting very much for Michael to go away as soon as possible. "And I don't know what that thing is, but if it's a plant I can find it for you. You probably know it by another name; different from what I know it by."

It seemed like the younger woman was eager to get rid of him. Becoming a persona non grata.... Wonderful...

But the offer of showing him the way to town had eased his tension. The further away he'll be from unwanted attention - the better. He should call Solomon back soon as well.
"I'd very much appreciate your assistance on that matter, yes." he replied in German, tilting his hat slightly backwards to look at the ladies better. "I don't want to interrupt your nightly lesson more than I already had... I suppose you know the way there, miss?" Michael and Gladys crossed gazes as he addressed her. There was a tinge of aggravation in his voice, he didn't know why he even bothered. But her behavior brought out a different side of him, and there was that feeling he couldn't shake off.

Something about that Gladys person was very off putting...

Unable to read or room (or rather a forest) Sera turned her attention back to Gladys as she moved back in the direction of the town. While she had heard stories of townsfolk getting lost in the forest, she didn’t seem to have that same trouble. Her uncanny sense of direction had kept her safe on more than one occasion.

“Gladys,” she continued in a lilting German,” did you happen to see the odd-colored lights?” While the conversation had been dropped earlier, the professor wasn’t keen to give it up right away. Michael may not have seen them, but surely the young woman had glimpsed the vibrant purple lights if she had been walking this way. “In fact, I was on my way to see you when the sky lit up like some kind of pyrotechnic display. That’s how I found Mister Burton here!”

She took a few more steps before dropping to her knees rather abruptly beside the path they were forging. “What luck,” Sera called from below.”Hydnellum peckii." Setting the books to one side, she took out a handkerchief from her pocket and plucked one of the fleshy fungi from the ground and held it aloft for her company. “The bleeding tooth fungus or the Devil’s Tooth!” Her company would notice deep red droplets clinging to the top its cap.

Gladys hesitated a moment, trying to think of how to answer since she had not, in fact, been approaching from the town, but had traveled through the wood... Her hesitation paid off as Sera was distracted by a small mushroom, giving her time to fabricate an excuse.
She crouched down, looked at the mushroom and wrinkled her nose in distaste, "Bloody Bread," she supplied, wanting to impress, "Not good for eating. Do you know a use for it?" Why was Sera so taken by this small and foul-tasting fungus?

It was quite enough exploring for the small robin, and no new findings were conducted since the last time he was sent to explore. A couple of days ago, that is.
They are perfectly, annoyingly, undoubtfully stuck in this forest - and there was nothing much they could do at the moment to fix it. He was sure, as far as it involves his master, a possibility will arise. What he lacked in logic he made up for with pure luck - that was his master alright.
As Solomon approached, fluttering wings barely audible in the night sky, he sensed more than one presence where his master had landed earlier.

Ah, we have company.

The small bird landed on Michael's shoulder, almost unnoticeable, though the witch could feel his familiar's aura approaching mere moments ago. He gave the small creature a small smile, ignoring the two women as he spoke softly.
"Anything new?" he whispered in English, ruffling the smaller one's feathers with his breath. Solomon let out a small chirp in respond, and Michael's features scrunched. What a bloody mess. He didn't know what he might have done to cause this disruption in the time-space continuum, but he's pretty sure he did not foresee their forced stay in this area.
Yes - they certainly had business here, he was sure of it. Very important business. But he never stayed too long in one spot, confined by supernatural forces.
The gears in his master's head were ticking and spinning, Solomon could almost hear them, and he let his beady eyes wander to the other two. They were both females, crouching over one of those gross red-extracting spores. How boring... Though, his master would most likely collect them anyway. He had a tendency to hoarding.
But something about one of the women spiked his interest. Had he seen her before...?
Oh.
Oh!
The feathers on his small body puffed and rustled as Solomon's animal eyes began changing, forming three small pupils visible through each cornea. Michael quickly noticed the change in his tiny companion.
"What is it?" his tone was cautious, eyebrows knotted in suspicion as he followed Solomon's line of vision. It was eyeing Gladys.
There were a few hissing noises coming out of the robin's beak, uncharacteristic to it's earlier tweeting.
Michael's eyes widened, gazing from Gladys to Solomon a couple of times.
"A what??" his voice betrayed him slightly, the whisper coming out rather louder than he intended.

Sera rocked back onto her feet, still holding the mushroom in her hand. Meanwhile, Gladys’s tactic worked quite well as Sera’s face light up at the younger woman’s response. “Bloody bread,” she repeated the words as if they were completely new to her, “I’ve never actually seen one in the wild. They are rather rare!” She began to twirl the fungus in her fingers and muse to herself. “There is supposedly some local folklore concerning these fungus and supernatural creatures.”

Completely engrossed by the mushroom, Sera had missed the arrival of the small bird. Her attention was first torn from the fungus by Michael’s sudden ejaculation. Shortly thereafter she noticed the small bird sitting upon the gentleman’s shoulder. “Oh! Erithacus rubelcula,” she puzzled as she meandered up closer to the witch and his familiar. “How quaint,” Sera pushed her glasses off the tip of her nose as she examined the Old World flycatcher. A soft smile spread across her face. The birds reminded her of home, and her mother’s garden. As she leaned in closer, her nose twitched as she caught the faintest wisp of sulfur once more. How odd!

Gladys was totally focused on Sera and the mushroom, and her attention to Michael drifted even more when he began speaking in a foreign tongue. Ugh, another one she couldn't understand. The man yelled suddenly, taking Sera's attention away again, how rude. Gladys turned to look and...
"A BIRD!" she exclaimed with all the excitement and wonder of a simpleton. She felt immediately stupid. "At, at night. It's unusual, no?" she tried to cover up her unrestrained outburst by grasping at logic. She covered her mouth with her hand in embarrassment. Wait was that bird... scowling at her? She quirked an eyebrow in confusion and interest.

Sera approached them, inspecting Solomon with too much interest. And far too close for Solomon's liking. He didn't know the human, and was still alert by the younger vampire. Her freckled nose was in a short a distance from him, almost brushing his soft feathers. It was a quick move as the smaller creature decided to peck the human almost unnoticeably, earning a warned gasp from his master.

"Solomon!!!" Michael frowned and grabbed his familiar with his right hand, gently enough to cup him in his palms and giving it a stern look. The bird crouched and chirped in it's flesh cage, weighted down by it's master's gaze. <"I'm awfully sorry Miss Edwards...."> he fumbled with his words, embarrassed and yet - side eyeing Gladys cautiously all the while apologizing. <"Solomon is not fond of strangers..."> Michael peered down at his own hands, releasing the small robin and letting him flutter back to his other shoulder. It was still alarmed and huddled close to Michael's neck.

The witch couldn't help but look from one woman to the other, contemplating his next steps. The best plan right now is to escape as soon as possible - the last thing he needed is fighting a vampire! And yet....
There were other lives at stack here... Life he wasn't so sure if were worth saving or not - perhaps it is Miss Edwards's fate to be eaten alive by this cursed being? Who knows! Certainly not him. Or did he...? He wasn't sure. Time was ticking... He was fishing in his mind for possible future events he might have foreseen but he'd remember this lady if he saw her. Just like he remembered the other lady... The one he's actually supposed to meet.
And what if he's wrong? OH! This whole situation was making his head spin.

The subconscious strings with his familiar itched. Solomon was warning him.
It's risky...
Involuntarily, his right hand ventured to the confines of his cloak, hidden by his body. If he was going to act, he'll have to do it nimbly. And he'll have no choice but to reveal himself. But what other choice did he have? Unquestionably, not many. His safety... and Miss Edwards safety was much more important right now. He'll take care of whatever mess he'll make later.

Books and papers tumbled once more as Sera rocked back slightly at the sudden affront by Solomon. Her hand clamped over her nose almost as quickly as Michael snatched up his companion. <“Oh, dear,”> she exclaimed pulling her hand away from her face, revealing a small patch of smeared blood. With a small chuckle, she pulled out handkerchief out of her back pocket and began to dab at her nose. <“No harm, no fowl,”> she cracked a rather poor joke at the bird’s expense while taking a few steps back to secure some distance. As if the bird would actually give chase, Sera. She chided herself for her actions. And there it was again, another strong smell of sulfur. <“It’s my fault for being so curious.”> She dabbed a few more times at her nose before feeling confident that whatever nick was there had stopped bleeding.

“Well then. All the more reason for us to get back to town,” Sera said as she tucked the fabric back into her back pocket. Collecting her things for what she hoped would be the last time, the academic turned her attention to her pupil. “I’m sorry for cutting into your study time. Let me treat you both to some lovely tea all the way from England for your troubles,” she would get this motley crew back to town even if it killed her. She was completely oblivious to how ominous that thought was.

The wretched bird flew right in Sera's face and Gladys couldn't believe its gall. That thing knew what it was doing! It couldn't just be any ordinary bird, and if it did anything like that again she vowed she would swat it from the air. Gladys scowled in the direction of both bird and man, and hated them with her eyes. No, he wasn't just a man either. Her scowl deepened, and then the scent of blood hit her already keyed-up senses, interrupting her line of deduction.

Like iron filings to a magnet, her head snapped immediately in the direction of the smell. Sera's face. Her nose. The foreign language the others were speaking became a fuzzy soft sound, like the wind in the leaves. In a blink Gladys was standing in front of Sera, standing on tip-toe to stare ever closer at her face. She wrapped a cool hand around Sera's wrist and her eyes threatened to glow with the barest hint of red.

She had been desensitizing herself to the scent of blood in the open air, but she was still very young.

Now was the time.

Though the vampire held Sera's arm, Michael's left grabbed her briskly, pulling her out of it's grip and flush over his body. He held her protectively, in angle as far as possible from Gladys. At the same time, his right emerged from behind his cloak.
It was merely seconds before Gladys was wrapped in an iron grip, a tangled rosary constraining her arms to her body and effectively immobilizing her.
Thank heavens he still kept it, and thank his past self for remembering to enchant it. Even though it weakened it's effects on supernatural beings, it wasn't his intention to inflict pain - but simply... make leeway for himself.

Small beads of sweat formed at his temples, anxiety and adrenaline cruising through his body, as he gave the vampire a shaky warning.
"Stay back, or this will get tighter..." his eyes pierced through her half-turned red ones, taking a few steps back while still holding onto poor Miss Edwards. Giving a faint whistle at Solomon's direction, Michael picked the other woman rather unceremoniously in his arms and broke into a posthaste run towards God knows where.
Solomon led the way, having the advantage of exploration earlier, he knew his Master wanted to get them to the safety of town - even though that was a risk by itself. Then again - everything was a risk when it came to him.

Trouble seemed to draw like bees to honey with this Witch...

((I'm sorry I didn't give Sera much time to respond, but I imagine everything was done in a few hasty moments. She can punch him now if she'd like uvu;;;; ))

If anyone lacked a real grasp on the situation, it was Sera. And if anyone could make it worse, it was Sera. None of it made any sense to her, especially not the part in which she was being carried away by a half-naked man she just met in the woods. Being this close to another man against her will brought on a sudden, familiar wave of anxiety. Rather than cry out, she wound up and socked Michael directly in the face. Her fist connected with the strong jaw of the muscular man, and although she wasn’t in any angle to cause real damage, it was enough to get Michael to drop her.

The ground caught her and she tumbled a few feet away. Before the world could properly stop spinning, Sera picked herself up and began to run back in Gladys’s direction. He had done something to her. What that was, she wasn’t sure. It looked like he had restrained her with some kind of bola. As she passed Michael without so much as an apology, her hands unclipped the small hunting knife from her belt. No doubt it would come in handy in one way or another.

Gladys was ripped from the warm embrace of a burgeoning bloodlust by the burning cold of a... rope? Wrapped around her? She didn't know exactly what was going on or how it was accomplished, but the end result was that she was in a lot of pain and could not move. All she could do was fall to the ground, mewling pitifully.

There were many events that Michael didn't foresee.
Among them was getting lost in a cursed forest, bump into an overly eager archaeologist, and restrain a vampire.

But most of all - he did not foresee getting pummelled in the face by said archaeologist, while fleeing from said vampire in said cursed forest.

Needless to say, the knuckle sandwich served to him was enough to momentarily immobilize him, effectively launching Sera out of his arms into the hard ground.
He had merely registered what had happened, eyes focusing slowly, before realizing the younger woman has sprinted off back in the direction they just came from.
Small droplets of blood made their way down his chin as he caught his breath, looking aimlessly into the dark woods. Solomon made a swift U turn to Michael's side, flattering his wings in panic as he examined his Master.
Michael touched his bruised lip, wiping the blood, his mind analyzing a million scenarios before he chose one adamantly. He did not falter by Solomon's nervous mix of hissing and chirping, turning on his tracks and after Sera.

<"I'm not leaving her behind Solomon-"> his pace quickened, reaching a slow jog. Clicking his fingers together, his fateful broom appeared in a haze of purple smoke, his nimble hands caught it in a swift move as he kept running. <"And I'm certainly not going to let her die... Even if it means I'm going to get kicked next..."> one skip and he was on his broom, legs crossed over the knotted hay at the edge as he leaned for better movement. He didn't usually use it, what you'll call, "traditionally" - but if he wanted to get to Sera faster, that would be the best choice. He just hoped she didn't get too far...

If there was a theme to this evening, it was Sera tumbling through the woods. As her foot caught an extended root, she went diving forwards for the 3rd time. While adrenaline kept her unaware of the scratches and bruises, she would no doubt feel them the next day… if she made it alive for that long. For now, she was single-mindedly scrambling towards her pupil, knife in hand. Her fingers wrapped around the threaded beads, which gave her a jolt similar to a static charge. She yelped, but dashed her pain as she spoke to the young girl. “Sssh, it’ll be okay,” she hummed as the grit of the blade sandwiched itself delicately between Gladys’s coat and beads. As she sawed away at the string, Sera was hit with the absurdity of the moment. Nothing made sense. Was that smoke coming off the girl?!
