I'm applying to university this fall. Was thinking of getting into a theology major. Has anyone done any major reading on this subject? I have read some things but nothing considered very highly non-fiction. Letters from the Earth by Mark Twain, Mere Christianity by CS Lewis, Dante's Divine Comedy. Do you suppose Faust count as well? Mephistopheles makes me giggle. What resources have you found, those who have studied theology, that you have found most helpful and interesting? |

I've studied theology on a university level...shocker eh? I suppose you mean Judeo/Christian theology to start with. I would first make yourself extremely familiar with the writings of St Augustine and Thomas of Aquina. St Augustine wrote some things that I personally feel are incredibly important to the world at large such as theories on agnosticism and theocentric metaphysics to name but a few. Thomas of Aquina...I think it's fair to say...is the father of mdern western theology. The writings of St patrick would also be insightful. Of course, it would be silly not include the writings of the great ancient rabbis. Personally I would find an English translation of the Talmud. The Talmud is really nothing more than the great rabbis interpretations of the meanings behind the Old Testament and is positively fascinating on every level. To tie it all together look for anything by a modern Italian writer/philosopher Gabrielle Josipovici. I would start with "The Book of God". Reading CS Lewis or Faust etc. will have a much deeper meaning after reading the above mentioned. When branching off into world religions and/or ancient religions Joseph Campbell and Edith Hamilton come to mind. Hope this was helpful. |

Many thanks, Joe.I have read Edith Hamilton. Although I don't have as much of an interest in the Classical gods as I do in Egyptian gods and mythology. I've read a lot about them, more than I have about the religions of ancient Greece and Rome. Most of my childhood was occupied with a passionate obsession for ancient Egypt and especially the religion and ancient idols of legend and myth. I was a weird kid, man. (Still am actually. lol) Saint Augustine'll be next on my list, to begin with. I'll definitely look into the other authors and works you've suggested. :ph43r: |

Hmmm well maybe I misunderstood a bit. If Egypt is your passion or any other ancient religions then maybe the place for you is not in generic Theology because generic theology in the countries universities means Judeo/Christian. Maybe you should be looking into Universities offering Ancient/Comparative religion majors and/or Egyptology which is a major all by itself. |

lol. What I meant to say which I guess I didn't say clearly was that it was a passion that has cooled off since I've gotten a little older. Not that I don't still have the same love and respect for it, but really that I don't want it to be what I study for the rest of my life. I am looking into a number of universities that offer anthropology and other ancient studies, but you see, the theology I am interested in now is in fact the more common Judeo/Christian. So you weren't mistaken at all! |
