The Rubaiyat; Medieval Sourcebook

The Rubaiyat was seen by some as a "simple book of poems" written by Omar Khayyam nearly a thousand years ago, while others saw it as a medieval sourcebook containing the wisdom of the Islam. In the Rubaiyat Omar discusses things such as the deity, good and evil, spirit, matter and destiny.

I am very interested in his writings and would firstly appreciate it very much if someone could give me any available information, poems, manuscripts or history facts, etc, as I currently have very little - one poem only - "The Now" and the wisdom behind it explained.

Secondly, what is interesting is that he tells you as part of the "wisdom" (explanation of poem) behind the quatrain, that you should imagine your body as a speedboat that is cruising through water (the period being between 1048 and 1122) - speedboats then?

Anyway, his discussions just seem very interesting so I would appreciate any sharing of information regarding that. Thanks!

Thank you Silex. Much appreciated. I am especially interested in his vision towards the future, and his ussage of modern terms in the 1000's.

Heres a link: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/omarkhayyam-fitz.html

As to the modern terminology...this can most likely be attributed to later translations/interpretations into English, the most famous of which was by Edward Fitzgerald in the mid 19th century...1859 I believe.

Just a thought before I read about it. Islam had a very progressive and deep esoteric and mystic movement (forgot the name of it) - maybe it has some connections.

I went into the link given by tilthammer and there is a lot to take in and try and understand... It will probaby take a bit of time and some other references as well.

What I did find out is that the modern terminology can indeed be attributed to Edward Fitzgerald, as he used a lot of Omar's writings and in his own writings explained some of the symbolism from his point of view.

Thank you for the information given so far.
