Date: August 3rd, 2013
Place: Subway station
Characters: Cara Coburn & Stephen Jameson
Plot: Stephen is having some doubts about finding his father. Sensing his distress, Cara has come to offer some comfort.

Some people spent their lives wishing that they had the ability to read minds and see into the heads of others. Cara Coburn could say from experience that, really, reading minds wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Especially being a powerful telepath like Cara was. Though she had learned to block the thoughts and emotions of others out over the years, sometimes it was all just too much to bear and she couldn't keep it out. Sometimes, she saw and heard things that she really didn’t want to...and that was rough, really rough.

It wasn't bad all of the time though. It was really useful when she was trying to track new breakouts. Had she not been such a strong telepath, it might taken them even longer to find Stephen…and that meant Ultra would have gotten to him first. Stephen was an interesting young man. Cara had no trouble reaching out to him and connecting with him. They had a strong connection, even though they hadn’t even known each other for that long. It was unlike anything Cara had experienced before, and she was both intrigued and worried by it.

It was because of this connection that Cara was able to sense whenever Stephen felt a strong burst of emotion. The twenty-three year old was down in the station with the others, just relaxing for once, when it hit. It came out of nowhere-a strong burst of distress that caused Cara herself to feel pain. Instantly, she was up on her feet, concern flashing through her blue eyes. Hang on Stephen. Where are you? I'm coming. She knew that he had been at Ultra and she was worried that something had gone wrong. She was already preparing herself for the worst.

Once she had a general idea of his location, she teleported away in the blink of an eye, leaving behind several of The Tomorrow People looking extremely confused. Seconds later, the brunette appeared in one of New York’s subway stations. She scanned the crowd, seeking out one in particular. Finally, she spotted Stephen, waiting for one of the trains-probably on his way home after a day of work. She let out a sigh of relief, relief that, physically, he appeared okay and that the place wasn’t swarming with Ultra agents. Still, if he wasn’t under attack…then what was wrong?

"Stephen! Are you okay? I sensed something was wrong. What's going on?" she asked as she approached him.

Staring at the rails in the subway station, Stephen lost himself in his thoughts, ignoring the crowd around him and the female voice in his head. He felt hollow and utterly left alone. There were so many people, so many lives he was responsible for, and every day he woke up he could put them all on the line with only one little mistake, one wrong thought. He had always thought he would be able to handle the pressure, to live up to the expectations he had inherited from his father. But he couldn’t. They all said they had his back, but did they really?
His mom said he would help him with what ever problem he had, well – good luck taking Jedikiah and Ultra down mom, he couldn’t even tell her about Uncle Jed, about what he really did in his company. If she knew that he literally stepped into his father shoes, she would be devastated, and that was not an option.
And the Tomorrow People? Cara and John covered his back, that’s what they promised when he joined Ultra and what they still say when directly looking in his eyes. But did they really? What did they really do apart from judging him? He was the one who had to watch every move he made when being around Jedikiah, every day. Every thought, every memory, every slight hint of him still being close to the Tomorrow People could be picked up by some of their telepaths and used against him. Sure, they were always there for him, when he visited their hide out, but they couldn’t help him when he got confronted by his uncle, because he had caught a whiff of something again. He knew that Jedikiah had a very close eye on him and if he tested his loyalty, he had to go through hell – alone, while trying to harm Ultra, keep his cover up and save who ever had to be saved by supporting the Tomorrow People. His mind was working 24/7 and it was exhausted, he was exhausted. He wanted to find his father so badly that he didn’t even consider him being dead, but after all that time without a hint, a clue where he was and Jedikiah claiming Jack was dead, he might as well too.

Again he heard Cara in his head. He shook his head, no, she wasn’t just in his head, she was here. Slightly turning away from her, he closed his eyes to blink away the tears in them, preventing that she would see them. It wasn’t the fact that he felt alone that hurt him that much, it was the hindsight about his father’s death.
“Cara, please, I don’t want you here now.” He mumbled clenching his fists. The last thing he needed now was a telepath in his mind analyzing his thoughts and emotions. She probably already had picked up his feeling just by standing near him. Still he couldn’t deny that his heart had skipped a beat when she had appeared because of worrying about him.
“I’m alright, okay? ” he lied when gritting his teeth trying to, probably in vain, hiding his thoughts and feelings from her. Cara was a specialist in telepathy it was difficult for him to shut her out any way, but now she could probably read him like an open book, and so could every other telepath from Ultra if he had broken down emotionally earlier. "Just go away."

Cara didn't have to be in Stephen's head to know that he was a in a lot of pain and feeling distress right now. It was written all over his face, despite his attempt to turn away from her and hide his expression. Of course, she couldn't ignore the way that he was feeling even if she wanted to. She could feel his hurt just as well as if it were her own. Even when she tried to block it out, it was still there. She really had never thought it possible to have such a strong connection with someone before. There was definitely something special about Stephen Jameson, some Cara had never seen in another person before. She was going to do whatever she could to try and help him, rather he wanted her to or not.

A frown tugged at the brunette's lips as Stephen said he didn't want her here right now and as he made an attempt to get her to leave. She crossed her arms over her chest, her expression on the verge of becoming a glare. Did he think she was stupid or something? He must think that if he really thought that she was going to believe he was okay and just leave. "I'm not leaving Stephen. If you really think that I'm going to believe anything you're saying about being fine then you really must not know me that well. I can tell exactly what you're feeling right now and I know that you aren't fine," she said seriously.

Her expression suddenly softened. She genuinely looked concerned about him and, perhaps, even a little hurt that he was trying to push her away like this. She reached a hand out, placing it on his shoulder in a comforting gesture. "Please Stephen, don't try to push me away. Tell me what's wrong. Let me help you..." she pleaded with him. At the same time though, she had that determined look on her face, one that seemed to imply that she really wasn't going to take no for an answer. If he thought she was about to leave or anything like that, he had another thing coming. She would like to see him try to make her leave...or run away. She would follow him, it wouldn't be hard.

I don't know what is wrong, but I know something is. I felt your pain Stephen, like it was my own. I thought Ultra had found out your secret or something horrible like that and it scared me. Tell me what's on your mind. You know I can help. She wanted to get to the bottom of this and help him. He couldn't keep it all bottled up inside. Just watching him now, he was clearly on the verge of totally losing it. She wanted to help him...it was just a matter of getting him to let her. She let out a sigh, her blue eyes staring up into his. "We're friends, aren't we? You can talk to me Stephen. i'm here for you, no matter what. That's what friends are for," she insisted.

Stephen gritted his teeth, which caused his jawbones to stick out. Trying to channel his anger through his fists, he continued clenching them, which let his knuckles turn white. Her claiming to know how he felt, not only confirmed his assumptions about her reading him, but also seriously upset him. Sure! That was exactly what his life was now, screwed up and without the smallest right of privacy. Especially with Cara, with whom he seemed to have a very strong telepathic and emotional connection, that enabled her to find him everywhere at every time and even feel what he felt. It clearly had to mean something, it was obvious and under other circumstances he would have appreciated Cara turning up for him, but right now he felt as if his privacy was invaded.

Bristling with anger he glared at Cara, who refused to leave him alone. He knew that he would not have a chance to get rid of her unless he knocked her out, and even though she was a girl, he probably wouldn’t stand a chance against her in a hand to hand combat.
"And how do you want to help me, Cara?" he said, his voice trembling with anger when shaking her hand of his shoulder "huh?"
Stepping forward, his anger and disposition was clearly set for being up for a fight. With his aggression channelled in his fists and the anger written all over his face, he started to threaten Cara just by the way he approached her.
"How do you think you can help me?" he hissed when turning around with an overacted gesture of mockery, drawing a few steps back from Cara "In invading my mind? Huh?"
He didn’t care if they would attract any attention right now, he was done, and Cara was completely right: he lost it.
"I mean, is there anything the great Cara doesn’t know?" he yelled "Or anything John can’t set straight again?" he laughed "Oh no, wait, John isn’t the one who takes the blame for every screw up! – That’s me!"
Turning his back towards Cara again, Stephen stopped, to take a deep breath, while the people who witnessed his emotional break out probably assumed that he just broke up with her, no longer bothering when stepping into the subway that just pulled in.

"Yeah friends", he repeated bitter, shortly closing his eyes to bare the pain those words caused "Thanks for reminding me." He said, before turning around and looking for the cameras in the subway station, obviously pondering if he could run up for a jaunt or not. The conditions however clearly forbid him just teleporting out of the scene.

The anger that was radiating off of Stephen was practically tangible. Even if Cara hadn’t been a telepath and so connected to Stephen, she would have been able to feel the anger radiating off of him. She was trying to stay out of his head and keep from invading his privacy, so she really didn’t understand where this anger was coming from. Had she done something wrong? Had she somehow offended him without realizing that was what she was doing? He had been feeling pain before, but now that she was here, it was just plain anger-and Cara was truly worried that she was the one causing him to feel this way.

A brief trace of hurt flashed through her blue eyes, quickly replaced by anger. ”You know I wouldn’t just invade your privacy like that Stephen. The distress you were feeling moments before was impossible to ignore. I thought you might have seriously been in trouble or something,” she hissed at him, her own fists clenching for a moment. She didn’t appreciate him acting like that. He knew she wouldn’t just pry around in his head. She had simply come to make sure she was okay-what was so wrong about that?

She closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath and attempting to calm down. She couldn’t get pissed off at him right now-that wouldn’t help this situation. A frown crossed her face as he talked about her knowing everything and John being able to fix everything. ”What is wrong with you Stephen? Did we do something wrong? Did I do something wrong?” she asked him. She wanted to find out why he was acting like this and how she could help him out. Even if he didn’t seem to want her help right now, she was going to give it to him.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as he turned away for a moment. She honestly thought he might do something crazy that would expose his powers in public. Cara knew that it was the simple fact that they were in a public place that was keeping him from just teleporting away right now. ”Don’t even think about running from me Stephen-you know I’ll follow you. Then again, I guess if you want to shut me out and act like this, then fine…go. I want to help you. But I won’t stop you,” she finally said. The fact that he was acting so bitterly towards her hurt her more than she wanted to admit. She didn’t understand why he was being like this and, maybe, it would just be best to let him leave if that was what he really wanted. Maybe she couldn’t fix everything.

Listening to everything Cara said, Stephen just stood there, staring at her, trying to retain his last remaining composure. The fact that she didn’t show any reaction to his mental response about them just being friends hurt him deeply and seemed to make things even worse.
„No Cara, you were right in first place“ he said bitterlyI am in serious trouble“
Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm down, to think straight, but he couldn’t, the responsibility just suddenly weighed so heavy that he felt as if it would crush and bury him under it.
“I live under a magnifying glass. Everything I do, is being analyzed, by either Jedikiah or John and when I screw up, people die… Every … Day.” Stephen shook his head, staring at the ground trying not to panic. His fists relaxed when he felt his skin getting cold and numb. Even though he started to breathe faster, it felt as if no oxygen was filling his lungs.
“People die because of me, Cara” Stephen repeated “when I screw up, I’m putting everybody’s life on the line. I'm a loose canon.” starting to lean his body against a pillar next to him “I thought I can handle this. I thought I can! But … “ unable to look Cara in the eyes Stephen unconsciously started hyperventilating when admitting “I can’t.”
Thinking of the recent Breakouts who had their powers stripped by ULTRA, of the Tomorrow People who had died by trying to safe those Breakouts, it was just too much. So many people had died for nothing. Since months they hadn’t found any hints or made any progress in finding his father or anything to help taking ULTRA down and still innocent people died.
“It’s on my hands” he whispered his eyesight turning blurry when the room started to turn “their blood. It’s on my hands, Cara.”

this one is pretty bad, sorry for that!
