A Decent Meal (Rebecca)

Rebecca watched Danny, but didn't really pay attention. It's nice talking with someone again, she realized. Perhaps I could get used to this.

Touching the heart pendant she wore, she took an unconscious step back, slipping off the edge. She managed to grab onto the side, and scrambled back up as the few on the other side of the aisle reached for her.

Heart pounding, she crouched down. It's probably safer this way... She was gazing at the walkers when she spotted a young child. He looks like Sean... She thought in disbelief, trying to tear her gaze away. The eyes look too dead... but other than that... stupid little brat... Tears sprung to her eyes and she angrily wiped them away. Can't believe I can still get emotional over that... I thought I was done with crying over them

But the more she tried to push the thoughts away, the more they came to mind. Her brother, running outside and getting torn apart... her mother, following to try and save her son... but it was too late... already too late... whispering a goodbye as she shot her mother... she couldn't have saved her, but the action was still so hard... her father, smiling and whispering... telling her it would be okay...

Someone was saying something, but she couldn't hear. Clenching her fists, she took a deep breath and looked up. She was trembling, she realized, forcing herself to calm down. Then the bottle exploded.

Rebecca was thrown from her perch on the shelves, landing on the floor with a thud. A shard of glass was embedded in her arm, and another in her stomach. Her eyes were closed, blood tricking onto the floor. Moaning, her eyes flickered.

Slowly her eyes flickered open and she looked around, disoriented. Suddenly the details came back to her. She had been having another flashback, and then something had exploded. Slowly sitting up, she saw the dead and a sharp pain came from her shoulder and stomach. Her head was killing her from the fall, and she wished she still had some of those painkillers left.

Danny did this, didn't he? she thought, ears ringing. Looking at the embedded pieces of glass. Well, there goes my shirt, she thought, pulling out the piece of glass. She winced, tossing the bloody glass onto the floor and putting pressure on her wound until it stopped bleeding. She did the same with the one on her shoulder before pulling out her gun and standing up.

She took note of her injuries, mostly obtained from the fall. Her head was killing her, she likely had a broken finger, and the glass cuts were painful. Other than that though, she was fine.

Did he try to kill me? She wondered, retrieving her backpack from the aisle. If he did, I will kill him She decided angrily, looking around. She was still wincing, but the flow of blood had pretty much stopped. It looked a lot worse if you only looked at the bloodstained shirt. Her finger was bent at an awkward angle, and she let out a small cry of pain as she bumped it into a shelf.

Where is he? she wondered, looking around. She held her gun tightly, biting her lip to keep from showing any sign of pain.

Danny stood up shakily but other than his vison being a bit blurry and the shakiness of his body he was okay. He looked around but didn't see Rebecca anywhere. The ringing had stopped now but his ears hurt due to being too close to the explosion. He was lucky not to get hit by any shrapnel but what about Rebecca? Where'd she go? Was she hurt? Danny still had the food over his shoulder in the red basket.

He remembered how he had to duck behind a car when Wyatt had blown up the oil factory with himself inside due to being bitten. Maybe it should've been me instead of Wyatt, Danny thought to himself, Maybe if I had died instead of Wyatt then my wife and son would be alive still and not buried in the ground. The sounds of the fiery explosion returned to him as well as his friends holding Abby back as she tried to go to him. It had been much bigger, much more dangerous, and there had been fire of course. That was small scale compared to it.

Enough of this reminiscing Danny thought snapping himself from his previous thoughts I've gotta find Rebecca, she could be hurt. He didn't want to call for her jsut yet as if she was hurt it would attract the walkers still alive towards them. In put his gun in its holster and drew his knife as he began looking down each aisle one by one. Come on Rebecca where'd you go? he thought before deciding he had to call out for her.

"Rebecca?" he called, "Rebecca are you okay? Where are you?"

Two of the walkers came from the end of the aisle and as one charged at him he jumped onto the shelves causing it to run past him. He knicked it hard in the back of the head as he came down and back handed stabbed the second walker through the right ear.

"Rebecca?" he called, "Rebecca are you okay? Where are you?" Danny called.

Rebecca, furious until now, felt her anger falter for a moment If he was trying to kill me, why would he call out and sound genuinely worried? She spotted him standing in an aisle and walked up to him.

"Were you trying to kill me?" She snapped, holding her gun up to his head. With her other hand, she gestured to the blood on her shirt. Her broken finger was bent at an awkward angle. She hadn't been able to find something to splint it with- she would have to be creative.

She put her finger on the trigger, looking into his eyes. She didn't want to kill him, but if she had to- if he had tried to kill her- she would.

Danny could hear more footsteps behind him as he ripped the knife from the walkers head and got ready tp attack what he thought was a walker.I've gotta find Rebecca he thought turning ready to fight a walker but instead it was Rebecca, Well that solves that problem.

"Rebecca there you are," Danny said putting his knife back into its holster, "Are you okay?"

"Were you trying to kill me?" she snapped back holding a gun to his head as she indicated the wounds and broken finger before placing her finger on the trigger. Danny's eyes waivered from the gun to her wounds.

"No I wasn't trying to kill you," he answered looking back into her eyes, "If I was trying to kill you I easily could've left you for the walkers in here rather than look for you, if I was trying to kill you why would I put my hunting knife away when I saw you? I'm not like that, I'm ain't no raider or anything like that. Didn't you hear me yell get down and take cover before? Are you okay?"

He would've asked the last part first but unfortunately she asked him a question first. He didn't quiet understand why she would think he was trying to kill her or why she acted so hasty. She changed from going to go eat pasta to drawing a gun at his head in a pretty short amount of time. She was so cold and seemed liek she'd given up already. Like there wasn't anything worth moving on for. But he knew that there was more than pain here in this world. He had felt it whenever he was with Abby. When he would sit with his friends and just joke around. All th little things that you would've taken for granted before are emphasized here. His life after the outbreak hadn't been as bad as most.Sure he lost it all but he got it all because of the outbreak . . . he never would've found Abby and fallen in love or had their son if it weren't for this outbreak. Then again Abby would still be alive and he'd be alive but their paths would never cross. I would do anything for Abby he thought If I could turn back time before the outbreak and make it so that the outbreak never happened I would because I'd rather have her alive and well but never meeting me than dead. He had a feeling that this would change as it always did. One day he thought like that then the the next day he would think better to have loved and lost to never of loved at all.

His mind dragged back to the current event of the day which was apparently holding guns to peoples heads. He didn't grab his, although he was a quick shot, as he had no reason to kill Rebecca. So far she hadn't tried to kill him, rob him, or anything else. He had never been shot before, he'd been shot at, but never shot. And he didn't feel like finding out how it feels like today.

I'm not like that, I'm ain't no raider or anything like that. Didn't you hear me yell get down and take cover before? Are you okay?"

Rebecca lowered the gun a bit. She knew she had been idiotic acting so rashly, but after she thought about her family she couldn't think straight. "What was I supposed to think?" It was the closest she would come to an apology, but her voice was calm now. "Got thrown from the top of the shelves. I blacked out for a couple of minutes, got pierced by two shards of glass" -she gestured to her bloodstained shirt and bloody arm, "and I broke my finger. Luckily it was only my little finger, but it's going to take weeks to heal. You ruined my new shirt, too. I almost got killed getting this shirt. Thanks for that." She smiled slightly, not entirely serious.

She sighed, looking over the shelves. "I'm just going to change over there. I'll be right back." Grabbing a water bottle from the shelves, she walked to the next aisle, digging in her bag and grabbing her spare shirt- a grey t-shirt with a black cat print on it. Putting down her gun and knife, she took off her shirt, holding it up and picking up the knife. She hesitated for a moment, but the blood would likely never come out.

She took her knife to the shirt, tearing off a couple of clean strips and a large chunk. Grabbing a water bottle and using the chunk of her shirt to wipe off most of the blood. She tossed the now bloody scrap onto the floor, tying a strip of the shirt around the wound. Doing the same to her arm, she put the new shirt on, slinging her bag over her shoulder. She walked back to Danny.

"We should probably get going," she said, her knife in her bag. She carried her gun and her crowbar now, figuring it would be easier. "So, where are you headed? I may join, may go out on my own. If I'm going on my own I want to know now so I can get somewhere safe before dark.

Rebecca lowered her gun a bit, which was a refresher for Danny.

"What was I supposed to think," she asked a bit rashly, "Got thrown from the top of the shelves. I blacked out for a couple of minutes, got pierced by two shards of glass," she indicated where she had been pierced, "and I broke my finger. Luckily it was only my little finger, but it's going to take weeks to heal. You ruined my new shirt, too. I almost got killed getting this shirt. Thanks for that." She said with a smile to show that she wasn't serious which confused Danny because a moment ago he could've sworn she was goign to lift the gun up again and shoot him or something. She seemed so rash, defensive, and violent. Many were now. Not Danny though. He thought every little thing he did he tried to think out unless there was no time too think things through that is. He just couldn't fully tell if she was serious, joking, or angry. He settled on a fourth that she not serious but still serious at the same time.

"I'm just going to change over there. I'll be right back," Rebecca said before walking off.

"Okay," Danny said looking out for any walkers as he knew how blood could cause them to swarm but no one knew came in as he would've heard the bell ringing. Then an arm broke through the shelf next to him and he backed away fast as it tried grab him. Startled for a moment, he recovered and took out his hunting knife as he grabbed the walkers arm that was still wailing trying to grab him and began to dig his knife into it until finally between the knife breaking through, the already decayed state of it, and his strength from all the years of mechanics he was able to severe the arm. He jabbed his arm through the hole jabbing the knife into the side it's head and retrieving both his arm and knife immediately. The severed arm was at his feet and he could see a crawler making it's way slowly from the other side of the aisle. It's feeble attempts to move faster would've been laughable had he not known just what those things could do. They weren't jokes. He didn't even know exactly what they were. The dead reborn? The work of the devil? Perhaps no more room in hell? Maybe some terrorist group found the ultimate means of provoking terror? The work of an ill-wrathed god? A government experiment gone horrible wrong?

He didn't know if he should be looking for these answers. After all his prime objective was to find other living people. He knew that without others man would easily go crazy. Especially a guy who was as social as he had been back in Denver. Oh Denver, he thought as the walker was finally close to him now, You're probably swarming with some sort of big burly mechanic walkers and bears and all sorts of wildlife. Then again the bears and other wildlife might've realized that these little monsters are walking bags of meat with little to no protection and the wildlife would've eaten them. Then again I'll still have to deal with the bears and wild life that came down from the rockies. He lifted his right foot as the crawler got to him and stopped his foot as hard as he could crushing it's head with his timberland boot. Blood splattered all around the floor. That one's for Wyatt he thought in a chilled and cold way.

"We should probably get going," Rebecca said from behind him. He was now bent over with one foot in the air as he pulled a large chunk of brsin off his foot. He dropped the chunk of brain to the floor and turned standing straight up again as he looked towards Rebecca.

"You're right," Danny said with a nod. Rebecca was wearing a new grey shirt with a large cat paw print on it. It was something Lucy would've worn, though in a childs version of course as she was younger than them. She held the combination of a gun and crow bar in her hands.

"So, where are you headed? I may join, may go out on my own. If I'm going on my own I want to know now so I can get somewhere safe before dark," Rebecca said.

"Well," replied Danny, "We've still got some pasta to eat once we get to a er less dangerous zone. Then I was going to go check the next town for survivors. It's what I've been doing. Figured the human race would have a better chance of survival if we all banded together. Hell worked for the walkers. They dumber than Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. They're also as pointless and useless only meant to compplicate everything. If you don't want to come at least let me drive you somewhere safe cause it'll be dark before you get anywhere. Especially with the injuries. Are they okay?"

They're also as pointless and useless only meant to compplicate everything."

"One or two other survivors? Smart. But a whole load of 'em? That's another story- that's how you get killed," Rebecca said coldly, adjusting her bag. I guess I could travel to the next town at least she thought, biting her lip, But it's just too dangerous to have a lot of people traveling together.

Hearing a noise behind her, she raised the crowbar and swung, spinning around and hitting something with a heavy thud. The walker groaned and fell to the floor. Rebecca raised her foot, stomping on it's head for good measure and turning back around to look at Danny.

The walkers hardly fazed her now- she was used to them. Unless they were in a horde, they didn't pose much of a threat.

"If you don't want to come at least let me drive you somewhere safe cause it'll be dark before you get anywhere. Especially with the injuries. Are they okay?" He asked.

Rebecca smirked slightly. "Safe? Nowhere is safe anymore. Haven't you seen the walkers? Wait- car?" Her tone changed abruptly from slightly mocking to surprised. "You have a car? A working car?" [I}Perhaps he could be useful... a car... he might turn out to be a good ally.[/I] "The injuries? I'll live," she commented dryly. "But sure, I'll travel with you- for a while at least. Should we get going?"

Rebecca had been walking- well, running- most of the time; staying in old buildings or underneath broken down cars. It would be great to find a car, perhaps even a protected building of some sorts. "So, where do you end up staying? Your car? Anywhere you can find? Some particular building? What supplies do you have?"

She feigned indifference, but she was actually pretty curious. Rebecca hoped he had at least some useful supplies- she sure wasn't going to give up many of her few precious belongings- they meant too much to her now.

"One or two other survivors? Smart. But a whole load of 'em? That's another story- that's how you get killed," Rebecca commenting coldly as she adjusted her bag. She was always so negative but Danny wanted her to come still. Negativity could possibly be something that changed over time . . . he as fooling himself partly though. Perhaps there was a tiem before all this that Rebecca wasn't cold or negative. It all clashed with his normally enthusiastic, bubbly, self. He had his negative thoughts and what not too but he didn't bring them out. He tried to drive them away but there was only one exit. He didn't know how to comment so he was partially relieved when Rebecca turned to bludgeon a walker to death with her crowbar.

"Safe? Nowhere is safe anymore. Haven't you seen the walkers? Wait- car?" Rebecca changed her mocking tone that made Danny feel slightly uncomfortable to a surprised tone, "You have a car? A working car?"

"Yeah," he admitted relieved of the negativity, "I was a mechanic before the dead decided they wanted to walk again. I was also a hunter and I played guitar. As for safe places, no you're tight no where is safe but there are places that are safer than other places. For instance here is more dangerous than say somewhere with a little less amount of brainless deceased trying to devour your flesh."

"The injuries? I'll live," she commented dryly making Danny feel as if she was still weary of him, "But sure, I'll travel with you- for a while at least. Should we get going?"

"Yeah if we want to have pasta we'll have to leave now," Danny said not wanting to have to make a fire at a time he couldn't see resulting in a minimized surrounding light source.

"So, where do you end up staying? Your car? Anywhere you can find? Some particular building? What supplies do you have?" Rebecca questioned as he took out his knife walking towards the front doors.

"Well you've seen my weapons," he said jabbing his large hunting knife into a walkers head, "But other than that a bunch of bullets, a camping bag with food, water, and my other camping supplies though not the tent. I wouldn't use a tent either way though no protectection what so ever. Sometimes if I find a good building I'll haul up for a day or a few hours after checking it hasn't already been compromised by the dead. But a lot of the time I just sleep in the Tahoe."

He casually stepped on one of the crawler walkers heads crushing it under his timberland as he went along. He put his hand on the door as the light shined through the glass door like a magnifying glass. He was glad it was still light out but why couldn't this magnifying glass door have burned the zombies to redead like a magnifying glass would do to ants?

"Man that's bright," he said pushing the door open and the sun was much less bright outside. "We have about an hour of daylight lefy," Danny pointed out as he jabbed his knife through a walker by his car. He unlocked his car with his keya and hopped in the front seat and waited for Rebecca as he started his car. They'd need to go somewhere that they would be safer to cook and eat the pasta. He knew a place on the way there that would work well. He put his knife back in it's holster and placed the red basket in the backseat.
