Not only did the Greeks personify forces of nature, they also personified abstract human concepts, like grace, memory and righteous anger.
The most fascinating of these, however, is the minor goddess Aidos. Aidos itself was a feeling that the ancient Greeks commonly referred to. The concept is difficult to translate into English, but it essentially refers to, as Hamilton says, "reverence and the shame that holds men back from wrongdoing, but it also means the feeling a prosperous man should have in the presence of the unfortunate - not compassion, but a sense that the difference between him and those poor wretches is not deserved."
This concept, Aidos, as Ms. Hamilton defines it, is the backbone of what I wish to instill in my students.

reading: Edith Hamilton's Mythology

09.11.12 17:29

In my downtime between classes today I discovered this charming bit of ritual from Ancient Greek life. They would begin and end each meal with an invocation of Hestia, who is so often treated as a minor goddess in myth, but in truth was arguably the most important deity in regards to day to day Greek life. Ms. Hamilton includes the following invocation while discussing the Goddess of the Hearth and Home:
Hestia, in all dwellings of men and immortals
Yours is the highest honor, the sweet wine offered
First and last at the feast, poured out to you duly.
Never without you can gods or mortals banquet.
Ms. Hamilton does not include the source of this prayer, but I find it very like the ritual of the caravan, where nothing was valued higher than the bond of family. I can almost hear the soothing sound of my mother's voice when I read these words. I only hope that when we find our Hestia, that she lives up to her sterling pedigree.

reading: Edith Hamilton's Mythology

09.10.12 12:07

"People often speak of "the Greek Miracle.
