Hutch Henries opens up another edition of XCW's mid-week online show, and on the lineup this week three bouts from the UK. Wade Barrett goes one on one with CM Punk in the main event. Session Moth Martina makes her XCW debut, but up first the closing moments of a qualifying match for this year’s Queen of the Ring tournament. Hutch explains the match featuring Act Yasukawa and Skyler Raye was a surprise pairing to see in the qualification stage, but as we will soon see, this one is more than just entry into the tournament. Before things are sent to the ring, Hutch mentions that Skyler’s championship is not on the line in this one. Queen of the Ring Tournament – Qualification Round Act Yasukawa vs Skyler Raye The televised portion of the match begins with roughly two minutes left in the time limit, as is shown by a countdown clock in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Both went the distance at Starcade, and both announcers feel we could see this one go the distance, maybe they spoke too soon as Skyler connects with a piledriver. Act manages to get a shoulder up in time, but it was a close call. Skyler stays on the offensive as she looks to wear Act down some more with what time remains. Act manages to get some distance after a few quick moves, which ends up causing Skyler getting tied up in the ropes. Referee Chris Truax is able to attempt to free Skyler, but ends up having to dodge a superkick, catching a defenceless champion. Act unties Skyler before throwing her to the canvas and going for the cover. A very close nearfall is the result of that exchange, and Act doesn’t look too pleased with the count. Act takes a couple of seconds before going back on the offensive, but she gets caught with a small package. Act kicks out in time. Act’s back to her feet quickly and goes for a running lariat. Skyler dodges and counters with a bridging german, two count only. Both women are back on the feet are proceed to chop the hell out of each other as the time expires. They keep going well after the bell, but the official manages to eventually get them to cease. Due to the time limit draw, both are eliminated from the tournmant. Both want more time, as does the live crowd, but the rules of the tournament don’t permit it. As much as the thought of not advancing sucks, Skyler seems to be content enough with it given the fact both of them didn’t hold back and offers her hand to Act. In what the live crowd feels was unexpected, Act turns down the gesture and returns to the locker room area. Back to the studio and Hutch Henries states he wasn’t sure what to think of it at first. Maybe Act was still in the heat of the moment, but over the next couple of days he thought about it and looked at some of Act’s matches while she defended the women’s championship on Skyler’s behalf, up to and including when the belt returned to Skyler. He caught up with Oedo Tai members Serena Moon and Asrial Major at a training facility to discuss the matter, wanting to see if they’ve noticed the same things he did. Serena knows the level of intensity Act and Skyler bring, but she too is trying to understand Act’s sudden behavioural change. Asrial has a theory on the matter, noting how in the title defences Act showed signs of when she held the championship officially. Maybe when Skyler was cleared to return and the belt had to be returned maybe Act felt jealious. It doesn’t seem to Serena that Skyler could show that emotion, but Hutch feels that Asrial might be on to something. As the three talk it over there is some arguing in the background and when they turn to look they see Act and Skyler getting in each other’s faces. Kris Wolf is there as well, trying to get between them and calm things down. The rest of the group head to the scene and after a moment or two things seem to settle down, though Hutch feels it is best to leave the scene for the time being. On to more positive happenings in the company, with XCW’s recent stops in the UK, it only makes sense for one of the company’s newest signees to make her debut close to home. Session Moth Martina’s in the house and she’s bringing the party to XCW, complete with glow sticks. Hailey Newton vs Session Moth Martina Martina’s entrance is what her fans have come to expect, which her opponent has to dodge some incoming glow sticks. She eventually sees enough hand cuts the party short as the lights come back on, jabbing and throwing some glow sticks at Martina. She gets maybe a couple more strikes in once the official bell sounds to start the match, but it doesn’t take long for Martina to get back in the matchup, and by the time it hits the one minute mark Martina connects with the bronco buster. Martina follows up that display with a tornado ddt. That’s all she wrote for this one as Martina pins her opponent for the win. Following the contest, backstage from the XCW/EPW Inter-promotional event airs as EPW’s Jennifer Louise caught up with Chris Jericho, who came up short against EPW World Champion Pete Dunne. Jericho gives credit where it is due, Dunne got the better of him on this night, but the big question is, who will benefit from the result more. The most common answer would be Dunne, after all it’s not every day someone gets the better of Y2J, but once XCW moves to the next city, Dunne will move back to his conventional self. History dictates that it will once again be hammer time on the next edition of EPW Live. Don’t get him wrong, Dunne showed tonight he can wrestle, but Jericho wonders how and if Dunne can use the win to elevate not just his career, but himself as a person. This isn’t Jericho’s first loss, and as we’ve seen time after time, Y2J is constantly evolving, and this match only fuels him to continue to do so. If Dunne wants to go a second round, or anyone else on the EPW roster wants to dance, Jericho’s not hard to find. The only question that remains is which version of Chris Jericho will EPW see next. CM Punk w/Paul Heyman vs Wade Barrett The former mad scientist was the difference maker in what was a back and forth contest, getting on the apron to distract Barrett as he was loading up the bull hammer, giving Punk time to get his senses back. Referee Eddington James got Heyman back down to the floor and while Barrett was still able to go for the Bull hammer, Punk easily avoided it and countered with a roll up, complete with a handful of tights to steal the pinfall win. Barrett argued the decision with the official, but it doesn’t change the result, which Heyman raises Punk’s arm up to rub it in. Punk leaves the ring as Heyman calls for a mic. Heyman tells Barrett not to worry about it too much, after all the home country hero can’t always come home and have a storybook ending. If it’s any consolation he can find solace in the fact that he can helped move CM Punk up the ladder another rung, not like he needs it though. Heyman adds that Barrett is riding on the fact that he is the first simultaneous grand slam winner. Which is a huge accomplishment not to get him wrong, but Heyman asks what Barrett has done lately. Heyman states that Barrett is like each and every one of the people of England here in attendance tonight, just like them, lately he has achieved nothing relevant. Heyman looks smug about his comments and at first it looks like he got away with it, but he soon finds himself on the receiving end of the Bull Hammer. Punk returned to the ringside area, but not in time to stop the strike. All Punk can do is help his manager backstage, while Barrett receives applause from his fellow countrymen to close out the broadcast. |

- A draw was a controversial way for the opener to finish. Could be a sneaky way for a heel to get a bye. - Session Moth Martina was booked well. Hope to see her character progress and get over across the pond. - Found Jericho's promo on Dunne a little odd. Didn't seem to go anywhere. - CM Punk picked up the victory however was fitting seeing Wade Barrett stand tall at the end of the show. |
