I probably think that South Africa's network TV is the worst in the world. It's a real joke. The head of the SABC that is suppose to be the top in network television is matricless which means he doesn't have grade 12 and lied about his qualifications but they keep him on although there is some political parties that wants him out. This guy has no idea. At one stage the SABC was in financial crisis. Not sure exactly what the situation is now. Now this guy wants to set aside 42 million rand to hand out as bonuses for a good job done. It is unbelievable. Good job that is a joke. They show old shows that have aired a couple years ago. We have to pay like a fee that is 265 rand (about $25) per year for a tv licence. Do other countries have to pay that as well? They are thinking of increasing it yet again. They have to have money to pay for that bonuses. That excluded the cable package that cost me about $65 a month. It is why have a premium cable package that brings good shows and really fast. Some shows even air like a couple hours after the US airing which was never done before. They rolled in this thing they called "Hot on the heels". It started last year. They show series now like a day or week from the US airing. They used to air a show continuously without any breaks. Now we feel it when the US goes on hiatus. I like seeing the shows soon but also liked it without any breaks. The only downside is we have a lot of repeats. Another thing that has blown out of proportion is...one of our soaps Generations. It's main target group is black people. I don't watch it but it is big news here in SA. The cast strike last year. Not sure about the whole story but it seemed it was resolved but this months they strike again. It was 16 of the main cast. This week all 16 got fired. That soap is in big trouble. Apparently the creator of the show said that they have episodes until end of Sept or Oct can't remember now. He said that is enough time to find new cast members. I think he is in for a rude awakening. Firing 16 people. Apparently one of the cast members have been there since the start. I think the soapy has been around for some 20+ years not too sure though. Just thought I would share this. |

Those price points are pretty in line with the US. There are INSANE amounts of reruns here on broadcast television which is why you're seeing shorter seasons or seasons split into two parts to eliminate reruns. Generations was a all black soap on NBC here for 2 years and it ended about 20 years ago. I wonder if South Africa took off with it? Interesting. 16 cast members is a huge chunk of cast to lose, it should make for exciting story regardless because there's bound to be some sort of huge event to off them all. |

It will be interesting to see what happens Erik. I never got into the soap. It never grabbed me. But is is huge in that market. I have a feeling that something will happen and these cast members will get their jobs back. It has made big waves. Will be interesting to see how this play out. It is funny how the behind the scenes are often more entertaining than the show itself. There is another South African soap Isidingo that had some problems with cast members. They left the show one by one. I don't watch that one either. There were just a small story on one of the cast members that left in May. I think she was the only original character left on the show. They didn't treat her right...it was my understanding. There were two South African soaps I watch. One was Egoli that was really good until about a year when it was cancelled. The writers didn't care about it and it was a shame. They could have really gave the soap an excellent send off. I think it was one of the worst endings of a soap. One of the main characters was shot and killed. He was the head of an empire but he lost the company. It is a long story though. But on the last episode his grieving widow (she was on the soap from the start) had an intimate dinner with her two sisters (one of them was from the start as well). They waited for her to join them at the dinner table. So the scene cut from the dining room to the stairs. She widow came down the stairs all dressed in black. Halfway down the stairs she stopped, looked into the camera and then the end credits roll. The way the soap was written in the last few months was a shocker. They did then a movie later that was total crap. The story revolved around two characters and their past. I was fortunate enough to have been invited to the Egoli set twice. I was running a fan site. It was great because they would send me publicity photos and everything to use on the site that was exclusive. I met the cast and they were great. It is fond memories The other one I am still watching is Binnelanders but I must say that for the past few months it has bored me to death. Also a once great show. A majority of the original cast has left. I think there are two left of the original cast. |

I know Zach. i think this could have implications in the entertainment industry in South Africa. Here is a link to a blog which a guy Thinus writes. You just have to scroll down a bit to get to that part. http://teeveetee.blogspot.com/ |
