ONE STEP AT A TIME EPISODE ONE OAD: Monday June 15, 2015 CREATED BY: ALICIA SORRENTINO EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: ALICIA SORRENTINO WRITTEN BY: ALICIA SORRENTINO DIRECTED BY: PHIDEAUX XAVIER SCENE ONE: MANNING CORPORATION: STEVEN’S OFFICE The scene opens up in Steven Manning’s elaborate office space. He is seated behind is his desk sending a text message on his phone. Suddenly, the door opens and he averts his attention towards it. He smiles as his fiancée Monique Long walks into the room. STEVEN Monique, to what do I owe the pleasure? MONIQUE Can’t a girl come a visit her future husband at work? I mean come on, you’ve had me ceremoniously dumped out of this place so many times, I’m surprised security let me in. Since they didn’t, I figured I was officially welcomed back. STEVEN You are my fiancée, you are welcomed here any day of the week. MONIQUE That’s exactly how it should be. Did you get any confirmation on when your mother’s plane would be arriving? STEVEN I sure did. She should actually be arriving any time now. I sent Arturo to get her, she loves him. MONIQUE You admit that your mother loves someone that isn’t a Manning? That’s a shock, even to me. STEVEN I know you and mom haven’t seen eye to eye on much. MONIQUE Try anything. Steven, your mother absolutely despises me. I really don’t know how she’ll handle the news that we’re going to be remarrying soon. I’m afraid that she’ll totally hate the idea and won’t accept the proposal that I have for her. STEVEN Proposal… what are you talking about? MONIQUE I am going to ask your mother to relocate… here to Hope Valley. Steven has a rather surprised expression on his face. STEVEN That’s a very generous offer, but why in the world would you expect my mother to want to leave her glamorous life in Boca Raton? Monique goes over to the chair across from Steven and takes a seat. MONIQUE Sweetheart, your mother isn’t the type to just enjoy Boca. Trust me, it’s a glorified retirement oasis. I know what kind of places your mother would like, Boca isn’t it. You know that your mother loved being here in Hope Valley when she worked with your father in this business. STEVEN I know, but I thought that my mother had done enough, so that’s why I asked her if she wanted to move away. She accepted my offer, so I assumed that she was going to be perfectly happy elsewhere. MONIQUE If you haven’t learned by now, you never will dear. When a woman says that she is happy, chances are she’s lying straight through her teeth. Your mother is a mover and shaker, not someone who can take a backseat and let everyone else have all the fun. SCENE TWO: THE ROBERTS: HOPE VALLEY The scene in the hotel lobby is rather dead. Besides a few people walking about, it is rather dead. Jenna Roberts has just arrived. She has a smile on her face as she looked around. As she walked over to her front desk, she saw her sister Tiffany taking care of a few guests. TIFFANY I hope that both enjoy your stay at the Roberts! The two guest smile and walk away. With a look of impress on her face, she places her hands on the counter and looks at Tiffany. JENNA There you go, that’s what you call service with a smile. TIFFANY You do realize that this isn’t my first rodeo dealing with customers right? I’ve basically dealt with people my entire life, this is easy for me. JENNA I know, I was just making sure that you had a handle on everything. It’s been awhile since you’ve actually worked, so I just wanted to ease you in. The smoother the transition, the better job you’ll do. TIFFANY Thank you for attempting to be my motivational coach sis, not that I really need it… have you seen Christopher today? JENNA No and I haven’t spoken to him in about three days. I wouldn’t be surprised if he packed up and hit Miami Beach, which wouldn’t bother me at all. TIFFANY I don’t get it, why did you let him back in on the business anyway? You always talk about him as if you can’t stand him. I know that’s not the truth, but that isn’t healthy sweetheart. JENNA Christopher is a smart business man when he chooses to be, I know that for a fact. Quite frankly, he’s the mind I need around here just in case I ever need to take some time away. TIFFANY Gee… thanks for the vote of confidence Jenna. JENNA Tiff, I don’t mean it that way. I’m just saying, Christopher is a sound business man. Sure, his methods are unorthodox … but they work. The way I see it, I’m happy to have my ex-husband around. SCENE THREE: DELUXE At the newly remodeled Deluxe restaurant, Kimberly Roberts is admiring her business. She looks over at everything with a smile on her face, suddenly she hears the door open. She turns around and sees Christopher Richards walking in. KIMBERLY Do my eyes deceive me, or is that Christopher Richards with an insane tan? CHRISTOPHER What can I say, you can’t stay away from Miami Beach in June. The two walk towards each other and embrace in a hug. KIMBERLY It’s so good to see you, I mean it must be nice to take those wonderful three week hiatuses. CHRISTOPHER Your mother brought me on to only work when she needs me, so I’m using that clause wisely. If Jenna doesn’t say that she needs me, I don’t have to report. The way I see it, she and Tiffany can perfectly handle things… I’ll just put in my own little input when I see fit. KIMBERLY That’s not the Christopher I know. The Christopher I know was a take the business by the balls kind of guy. CHRISTOPHER I’m still that, but I approach things with your mother very tenderly. You should know by now, don’t mess with Jenna Roberts. KIMBERLY Don’t worry, I remember the divorce settlement. So, can I offer you something to drink? CHRISTOPHER I don’t see why not. I’m in the mood for something tropical though, can you supply that? KIMBERLY I run the business, I’m not the bartender. When I said get your something to drink, I meant a water. CHRISTOPHER Fine, can you at least add lemon? KIMBERLY Now that… I can do. Kimberly walks behind the bar. She gets Christopher his glass of water and tops it with a slice of lemon. She hands it to him with a smile. KIMBERLY It’s on the house. CHRISTOPHER Gee thanks, I didn’t expect to be. KIMBERLY I’m pretty nice to my ex step father. CHRISTOPHER You don’t think of me as your stepfather anymore? I’m crushed Kimberly. KIMBERLY Always the kidder, look I love you. You know that, but I’ve never thought of you as my stepfather. You were always more a friend to me. You showed me everything that I needed to know how to accomplish this dream. I can’t wait for the launch tonight. I’m just thankful that Kyle Parks was willing to give up his dream to follow something else. SCENE FOUR: KYLE PARK’S OFFICE Kyle Parks has walked into his office space. All along the walls there are signs and posters that read “Kyle Parks: Mayor of Hope Valley 2015! Restore the HOPE in HOPE VALLEY!” Kyle looks at one the signs with a smirk on his face. As he opens the door, he sees his assistant Coleman Rockwell reading something on his iPad. KYLE Is that another e-mail wanting an interview? COLEMAN You know it boss, you’re a really popular man now that this special election is going to be happening in July. KYLE I understand the urgency. I mean, this entire goose race has been crazy. I haven’t had a chance to look at the latest polls, how is Michelle doing in them? COLEMAN She gained a little bit of ground, but not enough to say she’s close to regaining her seat. That’s awesome news for you, as long as things don’t change in the coming weeks… you’ll be the Mayor of Hope Valley. KYLE That’s the way that things are supposed to be. I know that I’ve had a long history with this town, not all of it has been good… but I’m the best option they have against that airhead. COLEMAN You have no objections from me sir. I’ve only been here a little over two years, but I’ve seen the damage that Michelle Foxworthy has done to this city. From her near complete eradication of the police force, to her asinine decisions to back Carter Clark as DA, the woman has no idea what she is doing. Businesses are constantly trying to leave the city. She has done nothing to promote the beauty of Hope Valley. Sir, you are the best candidate possible for this race. KYLE I appreciate the kind word Coleman. I also appreciate all of the positive things you’ve done for my campaign. You are the best aide I think anyone could possibly ask for. COLEMAN Thank you sir, I do appreciate that. We are going to mop the floor with Michelle Foxworthy, I can promise you that. SCENE FIVE: THE ROBERTS: HOPE VALLEY TIFFANY Hey, I’m happy to have Christopher around as well. You just don’t see my proclaiming that he is the hospitality industries messiah. JENNA I’m not doing that either. Tiffany, I like Christopher’s ideas… that’s it. I don’t think that he is the best at what he does, but he is the best that we have readily available. TIFFANY People would line up to work here in Christopher’s position, yet you just handed it to him. Jenna, we could have gotten someone spectacular, yet you settled for him. Do you really expect me to think that decision was made correctly? You let your pass cloud your decision making when it came to the business. I’m sorry, but Christopher will not add anything productive as long as you let him take these ridiculous sabbaticals. JENNA Don’t you dare try to tell me about what I’m trying to do in my business. You have never worked at upper management in something like this, you wouldn’t know. Tiffany, I know what I’m doing and I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t continually doubt me. TIFFANY I’m not doubting you, I’m just calling you on your crap. I’m going on break. Tiffany storms off. Jenna shakes her head in disbelief as Constance Garcia walks into the hotel. She quickly walks over to Jenna with a smile on her face. CONSTANCE I’m going to assume that this was just another day at the office? JENNA You mean with my sister throwing a tantrum over Christopher? Don’t you know that’s the only that apparently ever gets done around here? CONSTANCE Hey, at the end of the day… this is your business. She may not like your business partner, but she can’t do anything about it. The last time I checked, she is not your equal. She cannot do anything to make you change your mind about having Christopher around. JENNA I know, I just wish that I actually had my sister’s full support. This is family to me, I want my families support. As much as she doesn’t like it, I still consider Christopher family. We had nearly fifteen years of wedded bliss, we are part of each other. As much as she can’t accept it, I just can’t let him go. CONSTANCE It sounds like you are still in love with him. Jenna takes a deep breath as she looks at Constance. SCENE SIX: DELUXE CHRISTOPHER Kyle is a great guy. I’m happy that you are finally able to follow that dream. You are a dream chaser. I always thought that you would be something huge in the business world. KIMBERLY I really thought that you would continue to thrive, but you’re sitting idly by. Serious Christopher, you need to help my mother with that hotel. I have no issues with Aunt Tiffany, but she isn’t exactly a business tycoon. You’ve ran many successful businesses in the tri state area. If I trust anyone with my mother’s hotel, it’s you. CHRISTOPHER It’s funny, shouldn’t you be trusting your mother more than anything? KIMBERLY I’m worried that she doesn’t have you working as closely with her. You need to go back and take what you rightfully should be doing. CHRISTOPHER You know what, I think you are totally correct. Thanks for the pep talk kid. Christopher quickly smiles and hugs Kimberly. As he is walking out of the restaurant, he runs into a beautiful young woman. CHRISTOPHER Oh my god, I’m really sorry. I should probably watch where I’m going. WOMAN Don’t worry about it. I’m Lola Saunders, nice to meet you. Christopher smiles as the two embrace in a handshake. SCENE SEVEN: KYLE PARK’S OFFICE KYLE You know, I love your enthusiasm. This whole campaign started as a whim, and look at it now. You know, I really couldn’t do this without you. COLEMAN Mister Parks, you give me entirely too much credit. I have done nothing for you but make sure that you make it to all your rallies on time. KYLE That is exactly why you are the best campaign manager anyone could ask for. Look, I’m heading to the diner to pick up lunch, would you want anything? It’s my treat. COLEMAN I’d love a hot dog if you wouldn’t mind. KYLE You know it! I’ll be right back. Kyle grabs his keys and leaves out of the door. Coleman takes a deep breath then reaches into his pocket. He pulls out his phone and makes a call. He places the phone against his ear. COLEMAN Look, you want your information… you’ll have it. I just honestly cannot believe that you are actually going to make me do this. This man is possibly the best thing that could ever happen to Hope Valley, and you want to keep that… thing Michelle in office? Alright I’ll make sure that Kyle Parks isn’t able to win the election, as long as it keeps you off of my back. Coleman hangs up the phone and places his hand on the desk. SCENE EIGHT: MANNING CORPORATION: STEVEN’S OFFICE STEVEN As true as that may be, I don’t want you going over my head like that again. MONIQUE I understand, but your mother does deserve this. STEVEN Monique, my mother was there for a reason… Suddenly the door to the office opens. ??? Oh is that right? Steven Christopher Manning, I know I raised you not to speak for your mother. Steven takes a deep breath as he and Monique look at Priscilla from across the room. FADE TO BLACK |
