Jenna gets nightmares about the past

Scene 1

The scene fades into the living room of a penthouse. All the lights are switched off. The camera moves upstairs and passes a couple of rooms until it enters the main bedroom. There is an alarm clock on the nightstand. It shows 2:35am. Jenna is restless. Most of the sheets have made their way onto the floor. It is clear that Jenna is having a nightmare. The scene cuts into Jenna’s nightmare.

Two girls in their early twenties arrive at a college party. It is Jenna and her best friend Laurie. About an hour into the party the girls have met two guys “Colin” and “Andy”. Time is quickly flying. The foursome is dancing.

Andy: Why don’t we all get out of here and take the party somewhere else?
Laurie: Sounds good to me.
Jenna: I don’t know. It is getting pretty late and we have that thing tomorrow.
Colin: Tomorrow is Sunday. You’re a nun or something? You have to be at church.
Jenna: No just have a family thing.
Colin: You can blow it off.
Laurie: Your folks won’t mind if we are an hour or so late.
Andy: We are going to have a blast.
Jenna: No. We should really be going.

Laurie pulls Jenna aside.

Laurie: Come on Jenna. These guys are hot.
Jenna: We don’t know them. I am not going to jump into a car with strangers.
Laurie: They are not strangers any more.
Jenna: I don’t like this Laurie.
Laurie: Let loose for once.

Jenna shakes her head.

Laurie: I am going with or without you. I hope it is with you.
Jenna: I can’t.
Laurie: It is a bummer.

Laurie rejoins the two guys.

Laurie: Sorry guys. She’s out.
Andy: Oh well but we will still have fun.

Jenna follows Laurie and the guys outside.

Colin: You can still change your mind.
Jenna: Please Laurie. Don’t do this.

Laurie gets into the car.

Laurie: See you tomorrow.

Laurie waves at Jenna as the car drives off. Jenna wakes up. She looks at the time. It is now 4am. Jenna decides to get out of bed. She takes a shower and afterwards starts making breakfast. The kitchen clock shows that it is 6am. Jenna has set the table. She puts the cloth on the table. She leaves the kitchen and walks down the corridor. He stops at a closed door and knocks.

Jenna: Mel…Mel…it is time to wake up.

Jenna enters the room. The room is a mess.

Jenna: Mel…honey…
Mel: Go away.

Mel pulls the covers over her head.

Jenna: You have to wake up. Breakfast is done and you have to get ready for school.
Mel: (Tired voice) I think I’ll skip school today.
Jenna: No you won’t.

Jenna pulls the covers off.

Mel: MOM!
Jenna: I said you should wake up.

Jenna leaves the room.

Scene 2

Eric enters the kitchen. His daughter is busy making pancakes.

Eric: And this?
Haley: It’s your big day and you can’t go to work on an empty stomach.
Eric: Who is the parent?
Haley: Sometimes I wonder the same thing.

Haley puts the plates on the table. They take a seat.

Eric: This is really good.
Haley: Thanks dad. Are you nervous?
Eric: Were you nervous when you started at a new school a few weeks ago.
Haley: Yeah.
Eric: I am nervous. Media 65 is the biggest publisher in the country.
Haley: you are going to do great.
Eric: How are you coping? Making friends?
Haley: It’s not easy. I’m the youngest in the class and it doesn’t help that I skipped a grade.
Eric: You are smart. You don’t have to apologize for that.
Haley: I know. It’s just been a bit hard.
Eric: I know sweetie. I promise things will get better. This is new for the both of us.
Haley: I am just afraid that if the other kids knew…the reason why we moved was to get away from it all…what if…
Eric: No one will know.
Haley: I can’t go through that again.
Eric: I promise that I will protect you. No one will find out.
Haley: Sorry dad. Didn’t mean to put a damper on your first day.
Eric: You can never do that. I love you.
Haley: I love you too.
Eric: We should get a move on otherwise we will both be late.

They get up from the table. Haley grabs her schoolbag and rushes out of the door. Eric gives a sigh before leaving.

Scene 3

Ivy barges out of her office. She looks pissed.

Ivy: Annie in my office NOW!

Ivy paces up and down in her office. She is holding some papers. Annie enters. Ivy throws the papers at her.

Ivy: What junk is this?
Annie: It’s a story of Lindy Capshaw getting married.
Ivy: Exactly.
Annie: I don’t understand. We are an entertainment magazine and Lindy Capshaw is one of South Africa’s breakout stars. She is making it big around the world.
Ivy: Please bring me a bucket.
Annie: Why?
Ivy: So that I can vomit in it.

Annie looks shocked and too scared to say a word.

Ivy: People want sex and scandal. That is what sells magazines. Not fairytales.
Annie: I thought that we could give an uplifting story.
Ivy: If I want an uplifting story I would read the church newsletter.
Annie: I am sorry. I just thought we could do things like Media 65 and their Glamour magazine.

There is steam literally coming from Ivy’s ears.

Ivy: Don’t you ever mention that magazine in my presence again. Do I make myself clear.
Annie: Y…y…es.
Ivy: You are new to Gozzip so I will let your incompentence slide this time. One more mishap an you will be sliding out on your ass so fast.
Annie: Thank you ma’am.
Ivy: Now get out of my sight and find me some sex and scandal.

Annie nods and rushes out of Ivy’s office.

Ivy: It is so hard to get good help these days.

Ivy shakes her head before taking a seat behind her desk

Scene 4

Jenna is sitting behind her desk. She is holding an old newspaper snippet. There is a date on it, 03 August 1990 with the headline “Girl Vanishes Without A Trace”. Jenna thinks about the dream she had. A man appears in the doorway. He fakes a cough to get her attention. It works.

Jenna: How long have you been standing there?
Nick: Long enough.

Jenna puts the clipping in the top drawer of her desk.

Jenna: Have you got the latest figure yet?
Nick: Yes.
Jenna: And?
Nick: It is up by 20%.
Jenna: Just 20. I thought it would be much bigger.
Nick: It could be.
Jenna: We are not having this conversation again.
Nick: Damn it Jenna. We can’t be stuck in the old age. We have to move along with the technology otherwise we will be left behind.
Jenna: I said no.
Nick: You forget I own 40% of Media 65.
Jenna: And I 60%.
Nick: Are you against it because it was my ideas.
Jenna: I am not that petty.
Nick: Are you sure about that? I know you Jenna. We were married for almost 16 years and we still would have been if…
Jenna: If what? I take my daughter’s safety serious.
Nick: And I didn’t.
Jenna: No. If she were safe with you…you never would have let her wonder off at the fair alone.
Nick: I didn’t let her wonder off. You over reacted. You can’t keep Melanie in a bubble Jenna. You are going to suffocate her.
Jenna: I am protecting her. The world out there is cruel. It doesn’t care about anyone.
Nick: You can’t hold what happened to Laurie against our daughter. Melanie is responsible. You have to give her some room. You take her to school every morning, you fetch her from school, and she isn’t allowed to hang out with her friends at the mall or go for sleepovers. She feels like a prisoner.
Jenna: You talk to her.
Nick: Yes we talk. She wants to stay with me for a while.
Jenna: That isn’t happening.
Nick: Come on Jenna. I want to spend some time with her.
Jenna: Then you can come over when I am there. I am not letting our daughter alone with you. I can’t take the chance you allow her to wonder off again.
Nick: She was thirteen and went to buy a soda at one of the stalls. It wasn’t a big deal.
Jenna: It would have been if someone kidnapped her.
Nick: You really need help Jenna. This isn’t good for you or our daughter.
Jenna: You better leave before I say something…
Nick: I am not the enemy here. I know the date. It was exactly 25 years ago when…
Jenna: I don’t want to talk about it.
Nick: Fair enough but the situation with our daughter is far from over.

Nick leaves Jenna’s office.

Scene 5

Caitlin is on the phone when Tyler enters her office.

Caitlin: Get the layout to me as soon as you can.

She hangs up the phone. She smiles as she gets up and walks around the desk. Tyler opens his arms so that she can step inside his embrace. They kiss.

Tyler: I missed you.
Caitlin: You saw me like fifteen minutes ago.
Tyler: It is fifteen minutes too long.
Caitlin: I have a lot of work. I can’t be distracted.
Tyler: Not even by your fiancé.
Caitlin: Especially my fiancé. There is nothing I want to do than to spend every moment with you but the Spring issue has to be out in a month. I am a bit behind. Jenna will blow off her lid if she sees how behind I am. It is the change of the season and fashion is changing. I am the editor of Fash now and it is my first big issue. You should understand. You are the editor of the sports mag.
Tyler: Yeah…yeah. I get it. I am just worried that our wedding is going to be put on hold.
Caitlin: It won’t be.
Tyler: Our wedding is in October. It is two months away and not much planning has been done.
Caitlin: I know…
Tyler: Maybe we should get in help.
Caitlin: You mean like a wedding planner.
Tyler: Why not? A lot of people who don’t have the time use them.
Caitlin: That might not be such a bad idea. I’ll get some names.
Tyler: Let me know what you find.

Tyler gives her a peck on the cheek and leaves. Caitlin walks to the door. She looks at her assistant.

Caitlin: Adele can you do me a favor?
Adele: Sure.
Caitlin: Can you find me the best wedding planner in Cape Town?
Adele: I’ll get right on it.
Caitlin: Thanks.

Caitlin closes her office door.

Scene 6

Michael arrives at Impala Woods. There are a couple of police cars. He jumps out of his car. He follows walks down a path. It takes him about fifteen minutes to arrive at the crime scene. Detective Arnold was first on the scene.

Michael: What do we have here?
Arnold: Look for yourself.

He moves out of the way. It is a skeleton.

Michael: Who found it?
Arnold: A man jogging with his dog. The dog stopped and starts digging. The man saw the head and called us.
Michael: It looks female.
Arnold: Yeah. By the pieces of clothes still on the body and hair…
Michael: This body must have been here for a long time. It is probably more than a decade but we will only know once forensics is done. There is something around her neck.
Arnold: It looks like a necklace or something.

Michael puts on gloves. He carefully lifts the necklace upwards.

Michael: I have seen this before.
Arnold: Where?
Michael: I can’t remember. I know I saw it somewhere or one just like it.
Arnold: It looks like letter and a symbol between the letters.
Michael: It’s a J + L.

Michael starts to think. Suddenly his face changes to a despair look.

Michael: Oh my gosh.
Arnold: What is it? Come on Mikey. Don’t keep me hanging here.
Michael: This can’t be…can it?
Arnold: WHAT!
Michael: I think I know who this is and if it is then a lot of old wounds are about to open.

Arnold looks at Michael inquisitively while Michael has a worried look.

Wow killer start! I absolutely love it. Jenna is obviously damaged, poor lady. Wonder if the body found is her old friend.

You have a new hit on your hands my friend!

Good start. Cape Town sounds familiar. Did you have another town set in this town?

No Erik. Capetown is called the mother city of South Africa. Sweetwaters is in Amanzimtoti on the South Coast of Durban, South Africa. maybe you got a bit confused between the two.
